View Full Version : Final vote thread for "Hardcore Section"
lancetkenyon

OK folks, this is the final vote, as I have heard from some people they wanted to change their vote. Please, if you have questions or concerns, use the old thread, as I will be keeping an eye on it too. Leave this for a vote thread only. Only going to be 2 choices.....for it or against it. If you are not against it, even if you are not ready or will never be ready(2 years ago I would have said I would never be ready for it), please vote "yes". If you are steadfastly against it, please vote "no". Thanks for all the discussions and concerns. On this thread, I would like to get at least 5 names of people who should be nominated to be on the "Board of Horror...I mean Honor" to be the governing board or officials or whatever we want to call it. Again, minimum requirements will be in effect, but can be offset by ability if you do not meet all the requirements. A "qualifying run" will be put on periodically to allow newer members that have not been "vouched for", to get their foot in the door. There are probably at least 100 members here that I have wheeled with, but many more I have not run with. Remember.....Minimum requirements and seat time will be the determining factors here, not who you know. Looking forward to getting the ball rolling(not my rig for a change).
I forgot to add the poll on the other thread, sorry.

Yeah, my wife is now accusing me of going to a male strip club because yesterday morning I through out my back shortly after chopping a 20' section of 3/8" steel in the ironworker.... She says that I've been walking around like I got it in the "you know what" while in Vegas and that's why I'm walking like this. I finally got sick of being in the house so I self medicated and did what any rational person would do while on medication.... I went out in the garage and welded for a couple of hours. :mickey:

I guess it's how "they" define hardcore.... We all know who the "fearless folks are" such as Lance, Daro and Woody who practically flop at will, but I also respect the guy just as much who can get through LT, Predator, Ajax Mine unscathed....
I guess it all depends who the "nominated folks" are and what they determine hardcore is or isn't....
Oops, Lance answered it for me....
See the min reqs on the other thread........
I personally am not shooting for the hard core club, just yet.... But feel it might bring some credibility to the AZVJC that it sorely needs, cuz right now it's a joke in the four wheeling community...

Been through those trails numerous times WITHOUT flopping or body damage. But I really push the limits of my rig, to see how far it will go. Same with Joe and Rick(Woody). There are trails out there that body damage/breakage is almost guarenteed though, and those are the 4.5-5.0 trails. I have also seen trashed rigs that are due to not knowing how to drive. There is a difference between driving skills and stupidity....and I cross them sometimes. But you never know how far your rig can go unless you test it, and when that happens, sometimes you flunk the test.

Well aware of that, wasn't trying to zero in on ANYONE being a bounce it off the canyon walls, throttle jockey kind of a driver, as you know first hand, driver capability and knowledge of ones vehicle is one of the biggest factors on a 4.0 and up trail. I am just hoping that to be considered "hardcore" you don't have to be a member of the "on it's roof" club.... If it happens it happens, but I remember back to the days of a young Randy Ellis who had daily goals on how many times he was going to roll his old CJ5 over on a given trail.... To me that was just silly and something I don't think makes you "hard core"... But the reality of the situation is if you run these kinds of trails, sooner or later you WILL get some body damage and will probably end up on your side regardless of who's spotting you or what precautions you take... It's just gonna happen...
That being said (and like you have touched on), I believe the hardcore part lies much more on the driver than the machine (but the machine does have to be at least capable). How many times have you seen an overbuilt rig broken or worse because the nut behind the wheel had no clue on what they are doing? I bet more than once... Just because you have a $30k limit on your credit card doesn't mean your ready for this kind of wheeling...
And like you also touched on, I am a HUGE proponent that a hardcore wheeler knows basic repairs and has the tools and parts with them to get the job done. Just sitting on your rearend and watching someone else fix your rig is so far from hardcore it's not even funny....

You had roughly 100 total votes in the other thread. All but 17 were "yes" votes. What more do you want/need? Does it need to be unanimous? If so, maybe I'll wait to cast my vote! ;-)

J/K...FINE...you'll get a YES from me. Doesn't mean my concerns are gone. Not by a long shot. But those concerns shouldn't stop you/us/whoever from giving this a shot. Am sure the Board Members will share every bit the love I have for this hobby...and come up with a good plan and criteria. It's in the best interest of everyone, right?!?!?

I'm torn on this vote, explain to me again why we need a section only for hard core trails and what is the good it does for the majority not just the minority?
Not trying to be a smart azz, I really am confused here what the need is to segregate this site.

Sounds good, another thing we should add is they should be active on the board and the trail. I know there alot more "hardcore" wheelers out there that only lurk or don't post on here at all. Just like we shouldn't have moderators that don't wheel, we shouldn't have inactive wheelers in the subforum. Someone should have actually wheeled with you before being admitted as well. (And don't tell me there are never any good runs posted, there were two in Florence this weekend with small turnouts) I would imagine that once we get some cool "hardcore" runs set up more and more will be interested and contribute.
EDIT: After checking the other thread, need to make a comment about spotters. "hardcore" wheelers don't use spotters about 95% of the time. :punk:
As far as nominations go, some geographical areas would be good as well as being an active poster, I'm guessing that's why my name came up, I'm just trying to keep up with the Joneses.........

Following the logic of the new forum, shouldn't the whole site be closed to outsiders? Most of the trails we run, from 1.0 up to the 4.0's ive run are all being taken over by people who shouldn't be on them.
I agree with the idea of keeping areas of the desert and trails secret to prevent abuse but I don't agree with segregating THIS site for the purpose.
I'm not voting yes or no because it is up to Joe. If he wants to take the time to do this then so be it.

I think this is a good idea. It is good to have an "area" where the more experienced wheeler can talk about stuff and things. However, the entire area shouldn't be "closed off" to the rest of the club. Most of the hardcore people are, out of necessity, some of the best mechanics and fabricators out there. Their experience is a great asset to the less experienced members. To close off pics and tech talk just makes it into a click and will evenually turn it into a popularity contest.

Yes. Someday we'll make the qualifying run. Now, I am tossing some names in and if your name isn't in here - well, that is because we either haven't wheeled with you or because there are too many to pick from (i.e. don't get butt-hurt)
1. Desert Dawg - I don't care if he's a member or not - he deserves the spot and he's not only great on the trail - he's one of the best trip leaders I've followed.
2. Rok N Rich - We may get in political tiffs on the board, but when he's on the trail not only is he a lot of fun and a nice guy but he has balls and is very knowledgable.
3. TC's Toy - Thom made us absolutely drool over his rig and his driving ability up at P.D. - also a great guy, knowledgable and experienced.
4. Antman - " "
5. TRLRTDTJ - Kyle - with all the wisely made and just B.A. additions to his rig - the extended wheel base, etc, etc - also just awesome seeing him take the waterfall at P.D. without a winch - definitely on the list.
6. If I can toss in a 6th......I think that you hardcore boys should (not that its my business) do a dedication of this forum to Lowtech since he would have been right there with you on those B.A. trails if he were here.....
I think that perhaps the hardcore should be view only like the marketplace - at least let those of us that aren't in there peek in to be able to see what you guys are wheeling and everything. I just think the forum should state: if you don't meet minimum requirements, do not show up to these trail runs - contact "so and so" for more information.

Wheeled with all these people too, except Dave. Good choices.....but Jeff and Mike are not here anymore, and Rio is without a rig.

For as little as I actually speak up around here, I appreciate the comment, Wayne. Means a lot coming from you.
As for convincing me...you never know!
I'd love to tip a few cold ones while the final details are being hashed out!
Charlie (azcharlie) is another member who would make a great addition to the Board.
Absolutely!

X2 on Tom J... he's a good wheeler, knows the trails and is pretty diplomatic when it comes to stuff... I'd also vote for Lance and Rich, don't really know the rest well enough to comment...
I don't know, does his rig even RUN anymore???

I thought Rio now had a CJ he was building up to his old TJ standard (a sick f'in wheeling machine).
So we are going to keep it board only current people. I wasn't sure since they may come back with a new section opening up.
So then if Rio can't (rigless or doesn't have a rig that meets standards yet) then we keep my choices all the same and add......

Voted yes, just make sure that all you HARDCORE types post up your HARDCORE wheeling pics and your HARDCORE tech talk so us lower life-forms may learn a thing or two!
Thanks

Rio is selling his rig(if he didn't already) to build a buggy. Besides, he is hardly ever on here anymore unfortunately.

Did not know that about the Heep.
You're right, there aren't a lot of "harder-core" people on here anymore.
"Harder-core" as I am here but don't post up anymore due to the state of this place like the others.

I'm still around, although I did sell the jeep. However, I sold it to my next door neighbor so I still have access to it, and will continue to build it up and post the changes.
I don't have any desire to be nominated though (especially if it involves moderating on this drama board):aagh:
Look for me at the trails in about 6-8 mths with the new buggy though. It's got me pretty excited

Sweet!
Totally understand the drama part but thought you'd be a good addition due to your fabbing and knowledge skills.
Can't wait to see the buggy!

The first weekend this year I am NOT wheeling. My Brother is getting married in Vegas, and I am the "Better than nothing" man.

Gonna post up progress pics and tech?
Yep. First thing is to find a 75-79 toyota corolla body (would prefer 2 dr but 4 would do) Also would like to have a title with it... If anyone has any info please let me know
Then as things progress I will post some pictures and tech...
I will also post some tech on the old CJ whenever he has me do something, or whenever I take it out...

The driver IMO is much more important than the vehicle.

WOW! You're the man, Don.

More words of wisdom, Ski4X4 (Kevin) or Sy (Syota) are both excellent wheelers and spotters.

kevin,
I remember when you advertised yourself as a noob. You were the only one that showed up to a run I called on CAZ, I'm valleycat on that board. It was a holiday weekend. Your tires weren't even all the same size on your 'runner when you got there. You were just trying to learn the offroad game. We messed around on the gas pipeline road and went out to the north end of the lake. my wife was driving our stock, black XJ. On one obstacle, I remember you asking her 'can we make that'. She was like, of course. We all made the obstacle.
going from super noob to being nominated to moderate a jeep forum, as a toyota guy, in a couple short years just shows your dedication to wheelin' and what you can do with some seat time. nice job dude. nice job. much respect from me. :fashizzle:
