It all started a few weeks ago. This OLD GUY wanted to go on a ride. We talked about it and set up a trip on Sat the 8th.
My wife and I headed out about 6:00 AM . We were going to meet up with the OLD GUY and OLD LADY in Superior and 8:00. We met at a resturant and had breakfast. I was impailed to order the same thing as the OLD GUY, the sweat hog burrito. It was full of pepers and chili's, trying not to show how hot it was. At least until the OLD GUY did.
We left and stopped to fill up with gas. As I was filling up the OLD GUY walked up with his TUMS and offered them to me. We shared them while I filled up. It was time to hit the road.
We left and headed to a road called Battle Axe rd down hwy 177. We spent a couple of hours going threw the mountains and takeing pics of the beautiful desert. We then decided to go all the way to the coke ovens. When we started getting close the road started to get a little rough. I new that I would not have any trouble (IM IN A JEEP), but the OLD GUY is in a little old VW. This VW is a 1974 Thing, not very modified but has seen alot of dirt in its life. Stock front tires and a little bigger in the back. It has a 20 year old engine but still runs strong.
We got up the hill that is above the Coke Ovens and had lunch. The clouds moved out and it was clear and sunny. Our trip turned when we decided to go into Box Canyon. The road, yet highly traveled was still a bit rough. The OLD LADY got in the jeep when it got rougher. She didn't want to becuase she trusted the many many many years of expierience that the OLD GUY had. It was just to rough for her to ride in that old VW. Which had no problems at all on any part of this trip. A man on a yellow quad was suprised when that old VW climbed the ledges like it did.
We worked our way down into Box Canyon and took a break at some old water tanks. Went down the canyon and played on the rocks.
When the ride was over, we shook hands and said "It was great see ya next time". Parted ways and headed home.
The OLD GUY and OLD LADY A.K.A MOM AND DAD.

I thank God for every moment I can sped with them. It was an incredibale day and I hope everyone has days like this with the people they love.

Sounds like a great day!

Planning on doing that with my folks on Weds. In from out of town (ohio - almost got snowed in yesterday due to the blizzard back there)

They have never been offroading before.

Great post! Brought back a lot of fine memories of my parents. Those of you
who still have them, enjoy, and take advantage of their company while you
can.:sifone:

I pulled my first engine when I was 14 out of a '74 Thing. Learned to drive in that car as well.

One of the funnest cars you can ever drive IMO, all 56hp of air cooled fury.

Back when I was even younger, we used to go wheeling/camping in Dad's '74 Thing.

Little trivia, 73 didn't have the large rear scoops, rather just slats. 74 had them in the back, the bulbous things sticking out above the rear fenders. 73 & 74 were the only years the Kubelwagen (Thing) was imported to the U.S., other parts of the world saw it until 1979 I believe. I should have tried harder in Germany to pick one up from the German Military. Olive drab, hell yeah!

Cool expierene, thanks for sharing. Maybe the young kid I spent may day with on the 8th as well may have that same feeling one day and share it as well. We spent the day at the First Robotics Competition in Phx. He was part of a team of High schoolers that built a robot for this event. Though they did not take a trophy home, every parent was proud!!! We will be back next year trying to get the trophy.

I learned how to drive that Thing in the mid 70's. I drove it to my high school prom (by way of the desert). Went on vacation to Disney Land in the late 70's in it.
