I have noticed some slop in the steering lately and with the help of my grandson

did some checking today. I had him turn the steering wheel sharply from side to side with the

engine running while I observed the steering components for looseness or slop.

Right away I notice some give back and forth at the track bar mount on the axle end.

Also some slop in the drag link at the pitman arm end.

My grandson and I then tightened the castle nut on the drag link to pitman arm

two full turns and replaced the key. I also tightened the stupid torx bolt holding

the tb on the axle about 3/4 of a turn. After driving it, I notice most of the slop

was gone out of the steering. I think my Currie tie rod is bent some, and also

centered the steering wheel.

BTW does anyone know what size real bolt replaces that stupid torx bolt on the

track bar to axle end?

I checked my this afternoon/evening and all I found was some corn...... oh wait you mean the Jeep.
Yeah I checked that and found that my steering stabilizer bracket was a little loose on the draglink. Got that fixed and now don't have a clunk in the front end anymore. Also greased up all the suspension zerks.

Antman: very good post, it's nice to hear of things that should be checked on jeep. You get a drum roll,:drummer::drummer::drummer: take a bow.
Thank you for the alert!!!!! :)

You should crawl under your junk often if you go out wheeling often to check all your bolts and do routine maintance.

Having someone crank the steering wheel back and forth is an old trick everyone

should use to check the steering components on their jeep. Look for loose or parts

moving that shouldn't.:)

And the week following a run I usually crawl under and check tightness of

suspension components. Actually some times after a hard trail when I do a lot of

banging around, I'll check the jeep after I get it back on the trailers.:sifone:

Thanks for posting!

I always check my steering and suspension components before and after each ride. It's really easy to do if you just bang on everything a little bit with a rubber mallet. I bang on each end of everything that has a bolt. The loose stuff always rattles, so you know which bolts to tighten.

I've been doing this for a few months now and I've found loose bolts on the steering stabilizer, control arms, and rear shocks.

WEll worth spending 10minutes to avoid suprises at highway speeds or on the trail! :skull:

The snows melted enough and I am back from two classes back to back,
(Austin and Phoenix), and ready to roll!:aagh:

Lil Coda and I went to the Cracks today and the place is in FINE shape! I
don't go to work again until April 7th, so I got some wheeling to do and also
get the 4 to 1 in before the end of April.:)

Anyone got an answer for this question?

I just checked the bolt and the wrench that fits is 14mm, I couldn't get to the nut for some reason. I'm not sure that helps, but none of the other posts have either. :mickey:
