Matt,

I am sending this back to the board for input, but as I remember one way to
retorque the pinion nut is to mark where it is, in relation to the shaft
before removing it, and torque the nut down to the same spot when
retightening it. The other way, best/harder, involves replacing the crush
sleeve, lifting and removing the rear wheels, torqueing the nut and
measuring the friction with an inch pound torque wrench. I am not sure how
many inch pounds you should have.

I am sure 4 Wheelers Supply will have the part(s) you need, they might even
offer advice on how to fix it, if you talk to Barry.

There's nothing wrong with another store, competition is in the
consumers best interest.

Since I haven't been in this new store yet, it could make two
potential stores I may use. 4 Wheelers, at this point, with barry
and bill is pretty much the only one I use. The rest suck, IMO, their
customer service alone is enough to change me to a mail order buyer
unless dire emergency The personalities, as well, of the majority of
employees at these other stores are considerably below avrg. The
only thing they are good for is perhaps finding a lower priced item,
which 4 wheelers will always match anyway, and usually has in stock.
4WS's customer service, willingness to yak, help and dispense
knowledge and experience greatly outweights the others in Mesa.
Sheese, a few of them even wheel with us.

I don't believe we should judge this store prior to it opening.
Preconceived issues are sometimes insurmountable. And Joe, don't
sweat it too much you like "a" others perhaps "b," ya know?
Besides, I think you already own everything under the sun for that
heep of your's. So I'm sure you won't be in there much. Be careful
however, how stubborn and standoffish you choose to be, that
terrible day will come when your caught sniffing around a display in
that new evil store in it's demon location.

The doors of the store will open on Dec. 2nd, Monday.

The Grand Opening will be on Dec 7th, Saturday. From what Troy said, that would be the day to stop by. Sounds like they will probably have some specials going on.

He mentioned that AZVJC folks will be getting a discount.

Hi Scotty,

As I said& there is nothing wrong with good ole American Capitalism. The problem I have is with 4 wheel parts wholesalers is their choice of opening location& not with them coming here. Business is ruthless, put the other guy out of business is the name of the game& okay fine. I can be ruthless too&

By the way; theres another good ole American trait& loyalty. Ill pay more (within reason of course) to support our local guys& and I damn sure dont forget how much they contribute to our club.

Well see what happens with 4 wheel parts wholesalers& but I cant help but wish them all the worst.

By the way& I live in Mesa so I get to ***** more.

Joe,

I respectfully disagree. If somebody puts Fly-N-Hi, Offroad Unlimited, and Desert Rat out of business it will be their own undoing (just like what happened to Dick Cepek Offroad Centers). These shops have poor customer service and inflated prices. If they continue to do so they will become extinct. It's like the law of the wild, Joe. Let the strong survive and the weak perish. If they chose that spot "on purpose" its because they knew that customers in that area were unhappy. Whats wrong with healthy competition? It's good old American Capitalism :)

There is a True Value Hardware in Avondale I go to. I go to the Orange Shed or Lowe's if they don't have what I need. Why? Try getting help at these big stores. At the family owned True Value I can't walk through the aisle for more than 2 minutes without somebody offering me assistance. As long as a business provides customer service that is top notch and prices are fair they have nothing to worry about. Let these other businesses learn these lessons. That being said I will continue to spend my money at 4 Wheelers Supply. Don't forget to ask for Barry :D

Hi Stu,

Can you tell us what Troy's relationship is with the new store? I'm a little torn here because the store is opening near Offroad Unlimited and Desert Rat... there is also a Fly-N-Hi a few miles from where they are opening. I find it curious that someone would plop another offroad store right smack in the middle of a location where there are already three somewhat large offroad stores.

It seems to me that there are so many offroad stores around... I wonder how they all are going to survive. I can tell you this however... if push comes to shove, I'll be supporting the stores which have supported me over the long haul; stores like 4 Wheeler's Supply and to a somewhat lesser extent; Offroad Unlimited.

I'm trying not to cop an attitude... but for some reason, their choice of location really bother's me. I can think of dozens of locations here in the East Valley where there are absolutely NO offroad shops within a 5 mile radius yet they choose to open in a location where there are three existing shops in a three mile radius.

This tells me something Stu... and it probably doesn't take much intelligence to figure it out.... and it pisses me off.

You'd think I'd be happy having another choice so close to where I live... however... I see this as a move by a larger company to take out the small guy... and you know what; I don't like it.

I will do my best to see that we continue to support the shops who currently exist... and if there is not enough business to go around, it is my extreme hope that it is 4 wheel parts wholesalers who goes out of business.... and no other shop. While I don't care a great deal for Desert Rat or Fly-N-High... I do care a great deal about Offroad Unlimited and even more about 4 Wheeler's Supply... I would hate to see these guys hurt because someone larger opens a shop right next door (in the case of Offroad Unlimited) and they can't compete. Ahhh... yes... it is the way of business; only the strong survive... capitalism at it's best... rah rah shis boom bah!

I'll be leading the cheers when they close shop and I'll do my best to remind others in our group to continue to support our existing small business owners.

Kind Regards,

Joe West

Well...............I guess being about the smallest "guy" in the Valley
with a 4 wheel drive business, it puts me in an interesting position to
see all sides and possibly comment without too much grief from everyone.

4WheelParts is the largest distributor in the nation (possibly the
world). We've all seen their adds in magazines, etc. These guys are
ALL business from the word GO! I've seen the deals that they set up
with companies that they purchase from and how they handle payments to
those companies. It is BIG business all the way. These guys buy at
prices lower than you could ever imagine. And can under sell just about
anyone that they want and STILL make a profit.

What does this mean? As a consumer, if your smart and know this going
in, you can get a great deal on parts. BUT!!! You as a consumer going
to such a HUGE business, will NOT get a personal feel from them. Yes,
they will have EXCELLENT customer service. They always have. You break
something or something leaks and they did the work, they will most
likely fix it at no cost to you. They are big, got deep pockets, and
made a ton of money on the parts to begin with. They can afford it.
But you can be assured that they most likely will NOT remember your name
or face the next time you come in. Is that important? I certainly
think it is. I would like to be remembered if I spent $2,000 with a
business on something as personal as my Jeep. I know I certainly
remember nearly everyone that has purchased from us (but that is pretty
easy when you look at our volume compared to a larger business! :-)

Please understand, I am not putting down 4Wheelparts nor am I condemning
their tactics. This is just the facts of a business that has a TON of
money and influence (and do NOT underestimate their influence). I
believe they knew EXACTLY what they were doing when they put their store
where they did. They have the opportunity to drop a store into a
location and try to CRUSH half of the big stores/businesses in the
valley. That is how they think and that is what they do! It's all
business!!! They are a corporation, make no mistake about it.

So keep that in mind the next time you go to make a purchase. I
completely understand the dollar factor involved. And most that go
there will get a great deal and great service. But keep in mind they
will NEVER match the "cool factor" and excellent workmanship of
4Wheeler's Supply (and the such) or the personal touch you will get from
a smaller "mom and pop" kind of place.

Just my opinion..........which may get me into trouble..........but what
the hell!

I agree with you Jay. I have bought parts from 4 Wheel Parts Wholesale
before but mostly just cosmetic parts. Big ticket functional stuff I like
going to the guys that specialize in them as they are the most
knowledgeable. Something the 4 Wheel parts Wholesalers is lacking.

As some of you have seen, I also have buckets of really important looking parts that anyone is welcome to rummage through - bolts, brackets for god-knows-what, etc. All of these parts are off of TJ's we stripped to convert for tours, so the parts could be related to tops, belts, doors, roll bars, etc. Free to good home.

Can anyone provide me with a URL or explanation of how to decode TJ
VIN numbers?

For example here is one I am looking at and would like to be able to
get basic information about the jeep without having to contact the
dealership:

Thanks!

Hi Jay,

I think you are right on the money here... it is indeed the personal service
I get from the smaller guys which make me want to support them even if the
price is higher.

A good example of this is the deal I recently worked out with 4 Wheeler's
Supply...

I ordered a new NV4500 and install parts from them a month or so ago. A
week ago, I asked Brian (or is it Bryan) the owner if he wanted to do a
little trade. The trade I proposed was that they do the install for free
and I will give them some cubicles from my old office so they can modernize
their back office a bit. Brian agreed... and so I'll be dropping off my rig
and trading some labor for some supplies. It is exactly this kind of
flexibility which you will NEVER get from the bigger guys. Try going into
4wd parts wholesalers and offering up a trade... they will look at you like
you're on crack cocaine. <grin>
This is just one of many examples of why myself, and many others will
continue to support the smaller guys...

People keep saying that competition is good. In this case, I can tell you
that 4wd parts is out to crush the competition and then what will we have
gang? That's right... no choices. As best we can... we need to make sure
that this doesn't happen. 4WD parts wholesalers has made their intentions
clear by their choice of business locations... they want there to be no
competition and they will do whatever they need to do to crush the smaller
businesses around them. Well gang, I'll do my best to lobby that we not
allow this to happen.

Kind Regards,

Joe West

Hi Anthony,

We don't hate them... we just don't want them to put the competition out of business. Keep in mind... they are not exactly hiding their intentions.

My God people, what's going on here. cant a business get some props/love/credit for business expansion. who cares where it's at, who cares who owns it? 4 wheelers is the best place to shop and I say that from the bottom of my heart, but why hate the next guy for growth. this is America people, shop where you want, how you want, when you want. well, heres my 2 cents (not that it really matters to a lot of you), I don't care who you are or what kind of business you run or open, I can only say "congratulations" and wish the best of luck. Damn, this place isn't even opened yet and it's already being judged and downed for it's soon to be home in mesa.

Funny... I buy my gas from the station near my home where some inbred
red-neck ignorant white trash trailer scum decided he wanted to kill the guy
behind the counter because he wore a turban and had a beard... Yet another
example of the intolerance and ignorance pervasive in some of our society.

Well... my meeting room just cleared out and time for the next conference..
catch ya later.

Blah, blah, blah, Joe! Kind of reminds me about that damned gas
station on the corner that just opened up last week. Would you
believe it's right across the street from three other gas stations in
the same area? I would choose to support the gas stations that have
been with me over the long haul, but since there are so many of them
that they keep prices down due to competition and the economic laws
of supply and demand, I now choose my gas by the best brand for the
price. I would like to buy from the Mom and Pop store, but they got
mowed down to build another Blockbuster Video. I can think of lots
of places where there aren't any gas stations, and it really pisses
me off.

Ok, here's my point. If the three existing businesses have a
good solid customer base *AND* deliver outstanding customer service,
they will not suffer. I will continue to buy from 4 Wheelers Supply,
and I will also check out the new guys. This is America, Joe. The
same one where you said just the other day that we had to tolerate
others. So tolerate the new guys. Don't spend any money there if
you do not want to. Putting a store in a brand new location that has
not been tested is ballsy, to say the least, but perhaps unwise if
you cannot sell your junk to anyone but the coyotes. Jumping in with
the other dogs is aggressive, and shows that you strive to thrive,
which is good economic sense. Rude, maybe, but I do not recall
learning that there were manners in business regarding competition.
Ethics, yes. Is their choice ethical? Smart business? Probably and
most definitely, to a point. Why? Because now they have made at
least one guy who buys tons of stuff for his rig an "enemy" and will
most likely never become a customer. At the same time they have
offered others a new place to ogle goods. Hope they have tile floors
and lots of mops, because I imagine a good deal of drool on their
floors! Gas stations, grocery stores, Walgreens, WalMart, the
freakin' Militia and Jesse Jackson. I love a parade...

Hey Guys,

Where is th best place to pick up some trim parts off a TJ? Somehow,
my wife keeps breaking stuff. So Far the list includes 3 of the 4
air vents, and the plastic ring around the base of the shift boot
that snaps into the console.

I am thinking a boneyard would be best, so who has the best
selections of TJ's? Also, if anyone has these parts, I'd be happy to
buy them from you, just let me know.

I just called Statewide and the woman who answered the phone said they haven't had those in years and also suggested they were very hard to find. Hey, if things don't work out with the buy that Joe and I are working on, maybe we could see how many of us want one of these trailers and maybe do a group buy. They used almost the same trailer up in Canada for military purposes until the 80's and there are still a bunch there in excellent shape, I'm told. The problem is, they are in Toronto. Perhaps a truckload to AZ would make it more reasonable. I think the going rate was $500.

Again, for those of you who don't know what these are, here's a pic of a modified one. This is pretty much what I want to do:

when im going between 30-40 and hit a bump in the road it wobbiles.
some times really violent, sometimes its slight. Does anyone have
any Idea what is going on? My set up is 3" Tera Springs, RS 5000 at
all the corners, Rancho steering shock, Black Diamond 3" mounting kit
(Drop pit arm, R track bar relocter, sway bar extensions, quick
disco's ETC...) 1/2 spacers in the rear, 1" body lift. We redrilled
the front track bar to adjust the mounting point. I think this is my
problem. so what do you think?

GET RID OF THE DROPPED PITMAN ARM !!
Yes, I'm yelling ;)
Those simply aren't needed on those sized lifts (on TJ's), and, if fact,
often cause Death Wobble. This certainly sounds like what you're
experiencing..
Also, check and make sure that the track bar bolts are tightened correctly.

Cheers,
Fred
