I've been wanting to check this trail out for a long time. Stickbuddy knows this trail well and he and his wife will be guiding me and my doggies on this run March 22. He made a suggestion to announce a doggie run. I LIKE IT!!!
So if anyone is interested post a "I want to go" and we'll come up with a time/ place to meet.
Stickbuddy: are you and yours going to camp this run? And where do you suggest we meet?

I'm interested in going. Will check back for more details. Assuming this is a 2.5, maybe 3.0? Please post some more info regarding suggested rig requirements if you have time.

If it's FR143 up and over to El Oso Rd. and down to Roosevelt then it's more like a 1.5-2 - definitely stock Jeep friendly. I'm sure there are some places to get your flex on but I've never bothered to hunt for them, the view is worth the trip all on its own. Y'all have fun going up and across, I'll most likely be at work that day :(

Corwin, you are right, it is more of a scienic drive. Stickbuddy can you please add some details on this trail for all to read. Thanks

Nancy I was out there 2 weekends ago here is the Thread with pics (http://virtualjeepclub.com/showthread.php?t=31590)
It is a nice scenic run.
Stickbuddy

It's an easy run. No need to air down, just a nice scenic cruise. I have spent a lot of time up there but it was years ago; many, many years ago. I am not sure what the camping situation is. I would recommend a stop at Tehanus Springs in Brushy Basin (beautiful setting with running water in the stream at this time of year, as I remember it), from there it's an easy drive up to the saddle. There are probably camping spots up there, and the view is incredible! The next day is Easter so for those who have family plans (as I do), you can retrace your steps and go home; or run down El Oso Road to Punkin Center for lunch at a quaint sidewalk cafe then on to Jake's Corner and down 87 home, or go south from El Oso to Roosevelt and take the Apache Trail home. It's a nice, comfortable drive for kids and dogs. I'd say a meet-up around 9:00 or so at the Four Peaks turnoff, let the dogs out to pee and stretch and leave out around 9:30.

Cool Dave, haven't got to visit with you guys in a couple months! I have a Lab. throw for your Jeep. Do you know where 4 peaks turn off is? If not I'll be parked where you can see my jeep from the B-Line Hwy.

Thanks Dan for letting me know about this run!! My daughter and I were up over that way a few months ago, and I will love doing it again! Don't know about the dogs, have a pup who doesn't travel as well...so we'll see. Meet you at the turnoff at 9 that day! And will look forward to meeting new friends! :)

Just got back from 4 Peaks this AM, only the there and back, not a over the top.
Do the little crawl spot just past the 143A turnoff (Cline Trailhead) on the right side. Drive out onto the flat rock, down a few drops before looping back up onto the road. It's a little diversion from the bumpy road itself. Buddy in the H3 said "uh.. nope." :laugh2:
We camped at the top last night ! 29 degrees ! after hiking the Brown's Peak trail to the rocks. A bit too much ice and snow to scramble to the top.
quite a few water crossings to splash a little too..

If I didnt live in an apartment, and wasn't away from home for 14+ hours 3 days a week :aagh:, I would have a dog right now. I feel it is mean to have a dog without a yard for it to play in. Atleast a good sized dog.

I getcha. Me, I get separation anxiety if I'm away from my pals for more than six hours. Actually though, I read a study that a Great Dane is a perfect apartment dog, in spite of their size, it said they don't need to run all that much. Some breeds need more activity I guess; Border Collies, Setters and such.

We have someone coming up from Tucson, he asked me directions. I gave him this, speak up if you know a better route for them to take, please.
take the 79 north to 60
30 minutes
turn left (west) on 60
then north on 87 (Country Club)
(also called Beeline Highway once you get away from city)
30 minutes
4 Peaks will be on your right off 87, you will see sign on side of the road, slow and watch for dirt road turnoff, it comes up on you quick.
30 minutes
we could meet at McDowell and Beeline they want to
Brodie and I would like to tag along.

Just personal preference, but I like to take head north on the 101 and turn east on the 202, then get off on gilbert and head north again. Gilbert meets up with the beeline at the dump there and you bypass a lot of lights on Country Club( the 87)
Interested in going dont know were the run is so ill need more info

mark me as interested... AND... wonder if there's any interest in trying to find El Oso Mine, and Jolene Mine... if conditions permit. If you Google El Oso Mine, you'll find a trip report by a small group that made the Jolene Mine loop, complete with GPS coords.... said the mines were worth checking out. It's written up to be a little more challenging... perhaps a 2.5... a nice side trip up at the top.

That should be doable. This is a no pressure run. Once we top out, those who want to can go down El Oso and turn right for Roosevelt and home through Globe or the Apache Trail; or left to Punkin Center and Jake's Corner and home via 87. Or hang out at the top to explore the mine and then retrace the original route back to 87. Everyone can play it by ear and do whatever suits them. There is no need to air down.

We ran # 143 in a Corolla in '01, country road, bumpy in places and high, high. That should be the way to El Oso Mine at the top if you want to play and and then go down the other side to 188 as we did

yes, I do hope to join you this Saturday, am planning on it unless family obligations spring up. mark me as tentative?
incidently, the pics posted for the trail on top (El Oso/Jolene Mine Loop) are an example of the difficulty, probably closer to 3.0 in a couple of spots possibly requiring spotting, articulation, and some lift beneficial, but nothing we'll have too much trouble with.

Hi Digger,
I will not be attending Sat. Just did not want ya waiting for me. I think Callie and I may go to superstitions instead, went last weekend and boy is there a ton of wild flowers out there, and an eagle nest, and 6-7 hawks. Found a dirt road no one on it, so we are going to do some hiking and exploring out that way. Have you and the dogs gone to Cosmo park in chandler yet by the way, the one with a lake the dogs swim in? If not lets plan a trip together there with the dogs soon! Later, oh last week I think you were in back of me on Mckillips & Hayden, tried to wave but don't think ya saw me...so here is your wave, if it was you!!! Enjoy the run all!!!

Is the Springer a young dog?
ayup, Cody is young and energetic, but I think I'll leave him behind if only because our other dog, Abby, an Irish Wolfhound, will get lonely with no one at home but the cats, and Abby's a tad too big to fit in the XJ for any length of time. Nor can the cats be trusted to leave her be. Tim G.
Sorry looks like im going to miss this one I got some friends going to white tanks its a little closer and I haven't wheeled with them in a wile. Maybe next time thx

Maybe I can talk the officers into letting us go to 4 peaks turn off, I think they know the AZVJC are responsible adults. this would be to cool!!!!! Hunter you reading this??? Put in a good word if ya can!!! :) Also DaveDan is coming from Higley, this is a good distance to drive too. We'll do some wheeling, without a dought. as things would turn out, we had 5 vehicles total, a good mix, but would experience our first roadblock (literally) at the Bush highway and SR 87 where traffic was being rerouted due to surface undermining by a water source further up near Payson... so no Four Peaks today, except far off in the distance once we used option "B", heading through Butcher Jones to the Coves and Northward from there on an exploratory route. Barring a rough start (our visitors from Tucson had no sooner started out from airdown and shredded a sidewall ) we tooled around finding challenging terrain here and there, and a whole lot of scenery worthy enough to be on an Arizona magazine cover or two. Some of us took pics.
All in all, a great day for wheeling and scenery and the company of fellow Jeepers.
Thanks to Digger (Nancy) for coming up with the alternate route, and leading us around to a safe conclusion.
till next time... Tim G.

Okay, one more time to see if I retained it: Tim, Andy, Ryan, Larry and Rena (and of course Digger). Am I close?
Thanks Digger for putting this together, and thanks all for making it a great day. Hope to see you again.
Here's what I have for pics. I kept trying to set the camera for stop action photos after missing Ryan with his wheels in the air, so it might be a bit annoying to go through (although if it's your rig in the series, maybe not).

Hi Karen. I'm really sorry that you missed everyone, that's happened to me, and it's not fun. I don't know what the Beeline looked like, I was on Bush Highway and couldn't get to the Beeline. Everyone was trying to meet at the Four Peaks Road turnoff, which was a little further north on the Beeline than where the Beeline was closed. I was able to get a hold of Digger on her cell, but I think the situation with the Beeline got everything messed up.

Absolutely no problem! Just sorry to have missed you!
As I mentioned, we met Mark and Kevin at the intersection of Bush and Beeline, as I came in on the Beeline.... and we cut up thru the wash off of Butcher Jones (?) to get to the 4Peaks road. It was a really great day to be out, and alot of fun thru all that loose sand and gravel til we reached higher ground! Hope to catch up with you next time!
