Subject: [TR] Turkey Creek - Sunday, November 17, 2002
Hello All,
Bob Lynn is leading a Turkey Creek trail run on Sunday, November 17, 2002.
When: Sunday morning
Where: MEET AT THE TEXACO AT DEER VALLEY AND I-17 AT 9:30 IN THE MORNING.
Rating: 3.0+
Length: 4-5 HOURS
CB Channel: 04
TWO BUDDIES AND MYSELF PLAN TO GO PLAY IN THE BASIN, THERE ARE SEVERAL PLAY AREAS. AS WELL AS JUST RUNNING THE TRAIL.
WE WILL NOT GO THRU TO CLEATOR, THAT IS TO BORING WE WILL COME OUT IN BUMBLE BEE.
The Turkey Creek Trail runs up the Black Canyon from Bumble Bee to Cleator. After turning left off the main road onto FR 684, the trail will split to go down into the canyon, and then meet back up at the bottom. Either way will get you down, neither are very tough.
Once down to the bottom, take a hard right up and drive up the sandy wash. Keep an eye out for a trail that leads off from the left. If you get to a wide area where the wash splits, you've gone too far. The trail runs between tight brush on each side, there is a gate that you'll have to go through not to far along. As with all gates, if it's open when you find it leave it open; if it's closed then make sure you close it after you pass through.
The trail at this point winds its way up the wash, in many places the trail has all but disappeared. There will be rocky areas to play on along the way. If the river is running, you'll want to make sure you have a winch along, as there are boulders and quick sand hiding, waiting to bite a Jeep.
Keep following the wash up, eventually the road will become more apparent. The trail takes a steep climb out to the top of a ridge, then drops off the other side. You will come to a Y intersection, you may go either way. The left branch climbs another ridge and then drops you back into the wash on the other side.
The right branch takes you through an old hermit's mining claim. The trail on the right branch almost completly disappears; pick your way through carefully you'll find rocky flat areas with no brush on them, this is the trail. After passing around the corner from the Hermit's cabin, you'll see where the trail used to go across a bend in the wash; now that is pretty much impassable. You can continue up the wash and around the corner. If the water is running, this may be extremely hazardous.
After the bend, the two trails combine again. The trail is much more visible now, there will be a few places where the trail splits, take the most travelled looking trail. Go SLOW one of these side trails (the old trail) has about a four foot angled drop off as you come around a blind curve.
The further you go, the more apparent the trail is. At the joining of Poland Creek and Turkey Creek, the trail leaves the bottom of the canyon and heads across the hills to Cleator. Overall, with a small group of Jeeps, this trail can be done between 4 - 6 hours when dry depending on how much site seeing you do. If it is really wet, this can be a weekend trip. One note of caution, this trail runs almost entirely through active mining claims; do NOT stop and start digging around.
Remember to bring water, lunch (and more if it's wet), and don't forget your camera.
Enjoy and remember to TREAD Lightly!

What a great group of people! I was alittle nervous because this was my first run with the group (actually, my first one period...) But everyone I met was just awesome. The trash thing got a little gross.... but I guess someone's gotta clean it up!! Unfortunately, I had to "Jeep 'N Run" and didn't get to stay for the food. I had a geat time though, and look forward to the next one!
I hope to see you all on Saturday at the BBQ! Email me if you need info.
P.S. who won the raffles??
Stu Olson wrote:
I wanted to thank everyone who took time out of their busy weekend to help with the clean up. I was proud to see all those bags piled up on the shore, waiting for the USFS barge to come pick them up. Likewise, it was even better when they had to make a return trip to pick up the bags that came in a bit later.
Likewise, a big round of applause (or was the applesauce) to everyone who helped make today happen….name tags, trash bags, raffle prizes, lunch……thanks to one and all that helped in these areas and anything else I may have forgotten.
The weather was great and so were all the folks that attended.
Thanks again!

In addition to Joey's thanks... I'd like to thank Mike for drawing me and
all of the members of my family for the raffle... We'll settle up at the

On the serious side... it was a great turnout gang. I had a great deal of
fun and it was nice to see how different the coves looked when we finished.
With such a large group of people this year; it really made the cleanup go
much faster than I ever remember it going.

we hooked up with tim helzer and his toy truck- well modified. as a group effort, tackled all three feathers had to offer. headed out to the wash towards the trap. side-stepped up two other washes and crawled through some AWESOME rock falls. headed back out the trap to finish it off.
only had to break out the hi-lift once and the winch once. some body damage to all rigs and a bashed rear driveshaft on the toy.

Subject: Re: Coves Thanks
Ditto here! Thanks for everyone who provided something. We had a great time,
met some nice people and got to try out some extra flexibility due to a
broken track bar bolt (wow - much better!). We won stuff at the raffle too
(thanks to Chuy's and Toybox Offroad)! It was great cleaning up all that
junk. There was sooo much trash out there and unfortunately there is still
more. How many of you would enjoy smacking the next person that throws a
bottle out on the trail? The highlight of the day for us was finding a
lizzard tail without the lizzard and this thing was just wiggling all over
the place. It was gross but so very interesting.
Most common find: aluminum cans
Littered beer of choice: Budweiser (includes Bud Light)
Littered soda of choice: Pepsi
Strangest find: Startac cell phone all shot up - man I've wanted to do that
a few time myself
Largest find: Rear bumper from a car
Scariest find: TONS of shotgun shells and bullet casings - hope I'm not
driving a trail when people are shooting
Saying of the day: "I'm not picking it up if it's still steaming" - think
about it
These are my observations, btw, and are not event-wide stats. I think
someone found a broken boat and hauled it away on the top of their Jeep,
which should qualify for the largest find. Did anyone count how many bags
were picked up? The total would be nice to mention in press releases, etc.
Looking forward to the next cleanup!
P.S. To the guy on the four wheeler who decided to speed through base camp
and spray sand and dirt on several Jeeps including mine while my family and
I was in it - you need some manners, dude. That was rude and made you look
like a hick jackass. If you're a member I think you owe several of us an
apology. Stuff like that isn't going to win you any Jeep friends.

I'd like to add my thanks to everyone who contributed to the coves cleanup.
I'd like to thank Joey K. for allowing me to copy his thanks:
Thanks Randy Siade and Family for the food and cooking.
Mike Baney and his brother. Mike for coordinating a lot of this and getting
so many sponsors. His brother for bringing the dumpster for trash at the
entrance.
Gary Holmes for the name tags (This guy not only has great taste in
vehicles, he is quite the artist!)
Randy Siade, Chuy's, Hunter Offroad , Chrysler Family Parts, 4Wheelers
Supply, Toy Box Offroad , 4x4 GroupBuy.
In addition to Joey's thanks... I'd like to thank Mike for drawing me and
all of the members of my family for the raffle... We'll settle up at the
BBQ. <grin>
On the serious side... it was a great turnout gang. I had a great deal of
fun and it was nice to see how different the coves looked when we finished.
With such a large group of people this year; it really made the cleanup go
much faster than I ever remember it going.
Good job EVERYONE!!

we hooked up with tim helzer and his toy truck- well modified. as a group effort, tackled all three feathers had to offer. headed out to the wash towards the trap. side-stepped up two other washes and crawled through some AWESOME rock falls. headed back out the trap to finish it off.
only had to break out the hi-lift once and the winch once. some body damage to all rigs and a bashed rear driveshaft on the toy.

The BFG crawler be used in the competitions are working very well. Some fellow competitors did thier own tire test using the same Rig pulling a sled. The BFG Crawler pulled 200 pounds more before the tires broke loose than any other tire tested.
Also Goodyear has about 10 sets out know being tested. 40x13.50-17 radial

I'm putting in new Motor mounts on my 79 CJ5, with the 304 and am running into the problem of putting the new one's back on.
