When welding in shorts (because you only have to tack one thing

Here's a tip I learned a couple weeks ago.....
If you've got a small hole in your headlight and the inside of your lamp
has collected dust, do not think using an air compressor is a good way to
blow out the dirt. The glass tends to shoot about 5 feet, you're inner &
outer chrome rings become toast, the plastic backing blows to pieces, and
you end up with a big gaping hole.

Also, watch the guy welding across from you when you are sitting on the
ground. Hot stuff goes up the leg of your shorts and burns a hole in your
butt before you can get up. This is followed by you yelling and jumping
around, while everybody else is laughing.

LOL
Also, make sure, wether wearing shorts or not, you take off your
watch, if you wear one. Sparks that get caught behind the bezel of
the watch tend to burn quite a bit, because you can't see what the
heck is going on.

Subject: [TR] Lake Pleasant to Crown King - Sunday, November 10, 2002
Hello All,
Chris Benner is leading a Lake Pleasant to Crown King trail run on Sunday, November 10, 2002.
When: 10am
Where: Meeting at that old bar on 99ave and carefree highway, I don't recal what its called but its the ONLY thing out there.
Rating: 3.0-
Length: All day
CB Channel: 4
*5 jeep limit*
We're going exploring, we want to play on the obstacles. If we ever get to crown king then cool, but no rush.. A friend just bought a Jeep and wants to see what it can do.. should be fun.
The Lake Pleasang to Crown King trail is a local favorite. On any given weekend, there will be numerous groups of four wheelers, ATV's and motorcycles heading to and from Crown King. It is a fun and scenic trail into the cooler pines of the Bradshaws. This trail was the first trip ever done by AzVJC.
The trail takes off from the Castle Hotsprings Rd and travels through the foot hills and up the side of the mountain, giving nice views of Lake Pleasant and the Valley. There are some tougher optional sections that can make it interesting.
The trail goes through the old ghost towns of Fort Misery and Oro Belle, both of which are remnants of the Mining era of the Bradshaw Mountains. All that remains now, are foundations and a few crumbling walls. Fort Misery makes a nice place to stop and eat lunch as the small creek usually has running water and there are trees to provide shade.
In the winter months, the trail from Fort Misery through Oro Belle to Crown King will often have snow and/or ice. In the summer, an early start is necessary to stay ahead of the rising temperatures.
Once on top of the mountain, the trail runs through the cool pines and into Crown King. In Crown King there are places to eat and have a drink, and a general store that sells some excellent fudge.
There are campgrounds on top of the mountain near Crown King for those wishing to stay overnight. The fastest way down is via the main road which leads through Cleator and toward Bumble Bee. You can split off and go through Cordes Junction, which will get you to the Freeway quicker, or keep going strait and go through the little town of Bumble Bee.
Alternatively, you can take the Senator Highway toward Prescott or Mayer, this can be a very interesting trail during snow season. If you have the time, follow Towers Mountain rd through Crown King and up to the top of Towers Mountain, there are some excellent views and you can join back up with the Senator Highway afterward.
Have fun, remember to bring water and your camera.
Enjoy, and remember to TREAD Lightly!

Hello All,
Chris Benner is leading a Broken Arrow trail run on Sunday, November 17, 2002.
When: 10am
Where: meet at I-17 and carefree highway, leaving at 10:15am
Rating: 2.5+
Length: all day
CB Channel: 4
* Five jeep limit, the trail is too small for a lot of jeeps *
If we have enough time after this 4 mile trail, we'll go check out the "greasey spoon" 3.0 trail.
Broken Arrow is a fun trail with great scenery. A stock Jeep can make this run and there are areas for those with built rigs to test and flex their suspension, such as the Crack. Pay attention to the signs, as part of this trail is a one-way loop.
A lot of Pink Jeeps share the trail so please put your best foot forward while representing our club. For many of the passengers on those Jeep tours, you are the first real off-roader they have ever seen (gosh, that is a scarey thought!) You will find that most of the pink drivers are pretty cool!
The Devil's Staircase is fun, and some members have been known to run it bottom-to-top. If you do, please post a look-out at the top to prevent someone from coming down while you are trying to go up.
It usually takes a couple of hours to make the loop, which allows ample time for pictures and a stop at Chicken Point for lunch (you did bring lunch, didn't you?)
Enjoy and remember to TREAD Lightly!

all on Forest Lands, in the Rolls designated OHV area. You're good

I need some opinion type stuff too. Recently bought a 76 CJ-5 and there was carpet all the way through. Plaid wimpy looking stuff. Anyhow, started tearing it out this evening. Found rust in corners of rear "bed" where the fender wells meet the bed. What is the best repair, within economical reason. Does have one area rusted through, approz 1/8" to 1/4" hole, other appears to be bad surface rust.
Also planning on coating the interior floors etc with that black "Rhino Liner" type stuff, any input?
Last, the seat bolts appear to be seized. Sprayed with WD-40 for the night. Are they bolted to just a standard nut or is the "nut" section part of the jeep body?
Thanks in advance,
Jim

Ok here is my opinion. Although the Rubicon is equipped very well you
may not be able to make changes. I have reviewed the cross section of
the diffs and it is not like a convention gear set so say you put bigger
tires on it and want to change gear ratios to compensate for the tire
height change. Guess what you are out of luck. The transfer case
although being 4:1 already is a chain drive and we all know chains tend
to stretch and are not as reliable as a gear drive transfer case. So if
it was me I would by a TJ with D44 rear end and with the money you save
you can put the gear set in you need for the tire size, install lockers
and alloy axels with the 297x U-joint and a 4:1 transfer case.

get treated fairly? If one such thing exsist. I live in the east
valley, but will make the trip anywhere if I need to. (I will NOT
got to earnhardts though) Second question, is the Rubicon really
worth it compared to buying a sport and upgrading it? I think so but
I am not as up on all the mechanical stuff as some of you out there.
thanks
Chris George

No, you do not need the State land Use Permit for this run. It is
all on Forest Lands, in the Rolls designated OHV area. You're good
to go.

Subject: [az_vjc] need your opinion
Ok its opinion time. First off, I am looking at buying a new Jeep.
Most likely a Rubicon. So where is the best dealership to go to and
get treated fairly? If one such thing exsist. I live in the east
valley, but will make the trip anywhere if I need to. (I will NOT
got to earnhardts though) Second question, is the Rubicon really
worth it compared to buying a sport and upgrading it? I think so but
I am not as up on all the mechanical stuff as some of you out there.
thanks

These are going to be little tips distributed over time for those of us
out there (you know who you are) that are just bright enough to do
something stupid while working on the Jeep.
Lesson 1:
When welding in shorts (because you only have to tack one thing
together and it will just take a second) do not sit on a stool that
places you feet directly under your work. Your socks will tend to catch
fire.
Just hope this helps someone else,

Bill's right. Welding is a lot like sex. Anyone can do it, but to be good it
takes a lot of practice. Like hours and hours.
