Here is my 4 wheelers supply dilema. I drove all the way down
there from Mesa to buy Bar pin eliminators. I get to the counter and
ask for them by saying "I need bar pin eliminators for the rear of a
TJ" The guy looks at me sideways and says "What cho talkun bout
Willis!" He asks the guy next to him "We don't cary them for the back
right, Just the front?" and the guy says "thats right" so off I go...
Then later that evening I visit JKS mfg online and get the part
number. 9604 for the rear. I call and end up getting Barry on the
phone. I can tell Barry is rushed but he tells me that he has 12 in
stock and says he is sorry for the "new" guy.. and that the "new" guy
doesn't know and that if I see BArry personally he will take 10% off
the order. SO today I go into 4 Wheelers supply again and I end up
with the same guy. So I figure I'll ahve some fun with him. I ask
again "I need bar pin eliminators for the rear of a TJ" and he starts
to look sideways at me and gets out "Whut choo" and I interrupt by
saying they are JKS part number 9604. He looks at me funny but goes
into the back and comes out with.. THATS RIGHT.... My new Bar pin
eliminators!!! woo hoo! I installed them this evening. I hope they
help along with my new rear bump stops (elevator roller bearings).
Moral of the story... I don't really have one.. but persistence does
sometimes help.

Subject: I got some issues...
Hey ya'll,
I just went yesterday to get an oil change (I normally do them
myself, but the apartment complex I live at now frowns upon the idea
of playing mechanic in their parking spots). The guy (a friend
through a friend) that works there told me 2 things were wrong with
my Jeep ('97 TJ) and I know of 2 others.
First, he said I have a leak at my rear main seal. He said it's not
normally an issue until you get it replaced, then it starts to leak
bad every month or so. He also stated that I could leave it alone
and it will be fine for 4-5 years. He said the best option would be
to get all the seals in the whole engine redone. Has anyone had this
problem? How did you get it fixed and what all had to be done?
Second, he said that I had a leak in my transmission cooler lines and
it needed to be replaced as soon as possible because of the pressure
that they are constantly under. He quoted me $45 for the lines and
$112.50 for labor. Has anyone replaced these before? How much did
it cost? Is it easy to do on your own?
Third, I had to fill my brake fluid 2 weeks ago because it was almost
completely gone. I haven't noticed it going down at all since then
and I don't see any leaking anywhere. Is it possible that it can
just evaporate over time or miraculously disappear?
Fourth, when I was checking my brake fluid I noticed that I had
absolutely no engine coolant in my resevoir. The radiator was full,
but nothing left in the resevoir. Again, I never see anything
leaking. Why had I not come close to overheating? What would cause
that to happen?
Any information you guys/gals could give me would be greatly
appreciated. Like I said before I have no place to work on my Jeep
so I'd like all the information possible to bring to a mechanic, so I
don't sound totally stupid. Thanks everybody.

Well friends, I found the problem. After three days of wondering and not looking, I finally found what it was. I don't know how it happened but there is a Major crack on the master cylinder cover seal. If it wasn't water it could maybe be the chemicals I use when I steam clean the engine, but I'm not to sure. I was beginning to notice paint peeling from the firewall and inner fender, that tells me that brake fluid was leaking on these parts and eating my paint. so if any of you have an enemy that you want to pay back, just pour brake fluid on their paint job, and abracadabra------raw metal (it's better to do this in the summer because the heat activates it quicker, but please don't try this, it's a waste of perfectly good fluid). Anyway, I picked up the cover and installed it, no problem. The rubber boot under the old cap was so rotted away that it wasn't sealing or keeping the fluid in the reservoir nor was it keeping fluid, and any other contaminants out. I don't know how this happened, but I'm glad I caught it before I was really in a bind. I, once again, thank you all for your comments and Ideas. I never went through my whole brake system as thorough as I did today. I still want to know what that liquid on the brake fluid was though.

Anthony,
You would be wise to flush the entire brake system and get some fresh fluid in there. There is a good chance you absorbed some moisture from your steam cleaning. The gamble of not doing this is pretty costly if you lose. It's mostly a matter of bleeding the heck out of each wheel. There's nothing hard about this.

It's a "Fun" little game that was invented by our fearless Webmaster, I
think Sandee had something to do with making the tags...
Anyway, if you ever get tagged, the rules are on the back of the tag.
"Organized" runs are off limits. The idea is to not get tagged, and if you
do, to tag someone else as soon as possible.

Wade,
First... rear main seal. Like he said, not really an issue. Unless it starts leaking really bad and you get tired of marking your territory. Absolutely no reason for a complete engine reseal. And if correctly installed, the new seal should last as long as the first one did.
Second... leaking trans cooler lines are easy enough to fix. Obviously I can't see yours from behind my keyboard, but there is usually not a need to replace the lines. That said, you shouldn't have a problem finding a shop to fix that for under a $100.00. Might be a good idea to take this oppurtunity to install a trans cooler.
Third... brake fluid. If you don't have any leaks anywhere, master cylinder, lines, fittings, wheel cylinders, than it is probably just the normal fluid level drop that happens when your pads and shoes wear down. However, if it was almost empty that sounds excessive.
Fourth... coolant. You might have the infamous TJ radiator leak. If you don't have any leaks than maybe it just splashed out while off roading, who knows?? The reason you would not have overheated is that the overflow bottle is just there to catch coolant that is forced out of your cooling system due to heat expansion. Than as your engine cools down, this coolant is drawn back into the system. So by keeping your overflow bottle topped off you ensure that there is only coolant, and no air, in your cooling system.
If you feel like having someone else check it out for you, send me an email.

Since I'm sure some of you tow your Jeeps out to the trails I'll fill you in on one of the BIG trends at the Convention : BIG wheels .....Not just 22 inches ....not just 23's .....not just 24's .................but 26's and even 28's !!!!!!! I even saw a chrome face plate that bolted onto a 22 or 23 inch rim to make it APPEAR to be a 30 inch rim ! And now some companies are making 22" and up rims that have a face plate that actually SPINS when the vehicle is STOPPED ! It has a bearing in the center of the wheel and the face plate looks like it is the rim center but it actually is spaced out about half and inch and the real rim is black so from a little distance you cant tell . You can walk right up and give the center a little spin with your hand and it looks as if the wheel is turning inside of the tire . It's the next Pimp Daddy Wanna Be craze .......
I can see Rick Beer being bombarded with calls now ....." Dude , can I ,like ,squeeze my swampers on to those , like , 20 something inch rims with the , like , chrome spinning deal in the middle , or what ..... That would be sooooo , like , cool ! "
If anyone has any specific questions about what was new and exiting on display I'll try and answer to the best of my (highly overloaded) memory .
Take it easy ,

Subject: Re: [az_vjc] BFG Krawler update
Here's some information regarding those BFG's and the one's that will be available commercially vs the ones run in the Rockcrawling events. This comes from one of the tech Jeep boards, by someone who is very active in the rockcrawling scene and is on the support crew of one of the *major* ARCA teams:
"
One thing I would like to see in this whole tire war thing is an understanding by the BFG fans that it will be almost impossible for them to buy the (edit:same)tires they see the competitors run.
"
Followed by someone else's post who is in the field also:
"
I am sure that BFG is still working their new tires the same way they were in the mid 80's when I was involved in tire testing with the desert racers.
Being a locally based race team out of Vegas, they tested many new prototypes on the old Mint 400 "rock garden" area. I spent quite a few Monday evenings changing tires on Ivan Stewart's rig and several others. I learned a bit-the tires that the big dog racers run are NOT the same ones you and I can buy at the local BFG tire store. They may appear and look identical but they are different (edit: compund)!
A side note-Ultra wheels did the same thing. Remember the Outlaw II wheels? Racers got a different alloy than the ones you can buy at the store! I have watched Ivan deliberately hit a rock ledge head on at high speed-left front rim was "racer alloy" and bent but still held a bead; right front rim was "store quality" and completely shattered like broken glass.
"
There was a lot of discussion a while back regarding the MT/R's and it turns out that they do use the same tire in the retail stores, the best that anyone has been able to determine.
On a side note and some really exciting news:
"
I might get in trouble for this
But it's just too cool not to mention.
I just returned from playing touchy feelie with what I consider a near perfect rock crawling tire if you live out here(edit:in the west), compete, or just like MT/R's.
I would guess that GY got a little fed up with BFG stealing a little bit of their thunder and decided to get even.
The tire I saw was an MT/R, and the size is just about perfect for a lot of things. 40-13.50-17, coming in at just under the measured tire limit in most competitions.
Great aspect ratio, load range C for pliable sidewalls. Short enough to steer, tall enough to hop ledges. The 17" rim lets you run huge front brakes.
I don't feel too badly about mentioning them since they will be able to be seen on a rig at the upcoming SEMA show.
"

Fred

I don't know how this happened, but I'm glad I caught it before I was really in a bind. I, once again, thank you all for your comments and Ideas. I never went through my whole brake system as thorough as I did today. I still want to know what that liquid on the brake fluid was though.

Hehehe!

Just got back from the SEMA show in Las Vegas and I saw the 37 inch Krawlers on a rock buggy on display at the B F Goodrich booth. They looked great ( and the display was one of the most radical one I've ever seen ) . And while we're on the subject of 17 " off road radials ..... The Currie Jeep was sporting a hot looking set of FORTY " Goodyear MTR's . That's right , 40's !

"
Cheers,
Fred
