Subject: Re: Off-road accident & body work cost
When I was talking to her about it last night, she said that that the
$1550 quote didn't even include painting!!! What shop is going to
give a quote on putting a bare fender on to a vehicle? They wouldn't
give a quote for that. I tried to call a dealer last night to get a
price on a fender but called too late. When I call today, I really
don't expect them to tell me an unpainted new fender and flare is
$750. If they do, I'm going to start parting out my Jeep! :) This is
assuming it actual needs a new fender and they wouldn't just pop it
out and repaint it. The scratch on the flare only shows up because
it's a Sahara and has color matched flares. I never said that I
didn't want to make sure the guys Jeep was restored to pre-accident
condition. I do want that and will make sure it happens but I'm not
going to get screwed in the process. It's just that his quote seems
VERY unreasonable. Buy a new fender, get it painted, remove something
like 15 bolts, switch to new fender, replace 15 bolts, done. $1550 +
painting...I don't think so. I do "look out for my fellow Jeeper" and
I hope that they do the same. I was there twice for him that weekend.
I followed a motorcycle a mile out to where he got his Jeep buried up
to the frame in a witch's eye and had a tow truck ready to charge him
$50 bucks. Pulled him right out to the amazement and frustration of
the tow guy that makes his living driving the dunes pulling people
out. Then back in camp, I was trying to save him time by letting him
air up his tires instead of making him sit in the long line at the
store which is why he was parked so close in front of my Jeep. One
and a half cranks of the starter when she turns the key from the
passenger seat and he has a dent and a scratched flare. He makes a U-
turn in front of someone the next day and gets hit again. Sounds like
he's trying to help himself out by getting her to fix both of their
mistakes. Either that or the shop he went to really, really likes to
stick it to the insurance companies. I'll see him tonight and find
out more about what he is trying to do. Sorry for the long email. I'm
a little frustrated with what I think is going on.

Ok here is some more info. The Forest Service wants to know who is all out
helping with this clean up. So Mike Baney will be at the green gate meeting
everyone where you can sign a sheet for the Forest Service, put your name
in
for the door prize drawing and purchase raffle tickets for the 50/50 food
raffle (tickets are $2 each and you may purchase as many as you want). The
winner of the raffle gets the left over money after the food bill has been
paid. With as many folks that have signed up this should be a good chunk of
cash.
Base camp will be at the first cover I will have a striped EZ up with a
table under it. There will be the drawing boxes where you may drop off your
raffle tickets and sign up sheets for each cove. I would like to get one
leader for each cove. When you get to the first cove you sign up for the
cove you would like to help clean. This way everyone can see how many are
at
each cover. There will be signs directing everyone to each of the four
covers. I will lead a small group to the hidden cove to clean it up. The
Forest service have their barge and will bring it to each cove for trash
bag
removal so we should just pile all the bags by the water for when the barge
gets there.
We will have two grills and two cooks, There will be folding tables and
chairs for everyone to use. The general CB channel and channel for cove 1
will be 7. For cover 2 use channel 10, cover 3 use channel 12, for cove
four
use channel 14 and for the hidden cove we will use channel 16. There are 94
people signed up for this run which will great too much talk for one CB
channel that is why the separate channels for each cove.
There is a winter storm moving in this weekend so it may be a bit chilly
(The high for the day is 70) so dress appropriately. Thanks and see you all
out there.

As for rain goes I am hoping the winter storm blows through before Saturday.
If it does rain the coves is mostly sand so mud will be at a minimum.

Subject: [TR] Martinez Canyon - Saturday, November 9, 2002
Hello All,
Mitch Fisher is leading a Martinez Canyon trail run on Saturday, November 9, 2002.
When: Saturday, November 9th
Where: Martinez Canyon
Rating: 4.0+
Length:
CB Channel: 4
Looking to go to Martinez Canyon on Saturday, November 9th. I've never been there so I'm loooking for someone who can lead the expedition. If someone can lead, please contact me @ Trafalgar42@mac.com. Thanks.
Martinez Canyon has to be one of the most beautiful canyons south of the Sedona AZ red bluffs. To reach the trailhead you travel over rolling hills of desert cactus, shrubs and trees. All of a sudden you enter a narrow passageway into a canyon of deep red bluffs and cottonwood trees.
Most of the year there is a spring that winds through the trees and low area. You will find the old homestead at the grouping of cottonwood trees along with some old mining generators and storerooms. Just past the homestead you will drop into the wash and follow it to the old mill.
The road winds back and forth across the wash as well as follows the wash for a time but the trail stays in the wash. You can spend hours "playing" on the rocks and waterfalls.
A mile or so into the wash you will approach a large landslide blocking the wash so the trail starts up the switchback trail "to the top of the world". The view from the top of the mountain is breathtaking.
As you start back down the switchback trail you will find it has been washed out, big time! The washout cuts through several of the "switchbacks" in a cut approximately 8 feet deep and 8 foot wide, so down you go. After a drop into the washout you will crank a hard left turn and literally freeslide on the loose gravel/dirt about 200 yards.
The first comment made from one of the original founders is the best description to the end of a great day of wheeling. "This is better than an 'E' Ticket ride at Disneyland! It's wheel'n the luge!"
This trail is definitely for the "extreme" vehicle as well as an experienced driver. Lockers are required and 33" tires and maximum clearance are a must.
Enjoy and remember to TREAD Lightly!
NOTE: 2/17/02 - I (Stu Olson) ran the trail yesterday and I believe it is safe to say that there is not much of a chance to "run the luge" anymore. I could be mistaken, but few (any?) would survive the drop into the luge. It is extrememly erroded now and the old bypass is now the main path down, IMO.

Parts cost from Darner: TJ fender $355 + flare $122 = $477.
$477 vs. $750 for parts. That's over 50% markup from the cost at the
DEALER for me. I'd assume a shop would get a lower price. $800 for
labor might make sense if they were fixing the dent and prepping the
fender for paint. A new fender wouldn't need all that. Just doesn't
add up. Assuming that's an honest quote, it's no wonder insurance
rates are so high when shops charge 50+% markup on parts and $800 per
hour on labor(not including painting) for a dent the size of a half
dollar and a little paint scratched off of a plastic flare.

Paint and body shops do not buy parts from the dealer. They pay way less for
the parts then the deal sells them for. I bought a windshield frame for my
CJ at a body parts warehouse for around $70.

Thanks and see you all
out there.

I am looking for a drivers side front in Spice (looks like small checkerboard pattern) for a 95 YJ
If I can't find a single seat, I would need two matching front seat and possibly folding bench for a 95 YJ....am looking for a Spice color.
The seat or seats must be the high back style and have the reclining feature..prefer stock if I can get it.
Must be in good shape...I have seats already but the drivers front is bad.

I have some mesh style light guards for a TJ that I took off my Jeep. I don't want them and I am going to toss them if none of you want them. I have the front, rear and indicator light guards. I'm sorry I don't have any pics and don't have a way to get any. Let me know if you want them.

The cleanup will prob be done about 2 or so....just guessing on
previous cleanups. The raffle will be held AFTER the cleanup is
done, and you must be present to win. Randy, lunch after also? I
would imagine so....
