First off, I want to thank everybody that replied. Sooo many
options...but my curiosity is getting the better of me and with all
I've heard about Duffy Ladd's shop, I have to check it out. So, to
everyone that offered to help, as of now, I'm planning on lugging
the lift kit over for the BBQ on the 16th and playing with all the
tools, so show up. I will still bring lots of beer because I don't
think I could ever feel right about myself if I showed up to a BBQ
and didn't bring beer. I've been called a beer snob by a friend so
expect at least a case of really good beer. Anyway, I hope to see
a lot of you there.

Hi Mike,
I spoke to Duffy a little while ago about doing this. We may need to plan for you to come earlier or even a different day depending on how many people show up. Obviously, I don't know what all is involved in this project, but he said it was something you probably wouldn't want to do with 100 or so people around you. Let me know what you think. He's out of town until Friday, but we will work something out.

I've been reading about how everyone cleans their Jeep after a run and I
really liked the leaf blower idea. Well with all this talk about cleaning
their Jeep, I decided to wash my Jeep after not washing it for about 4
months and had it out in the mud and muck over the weekend. I'm currently
in VA and we are in the middle of a 4 year drought. We do get rain but
several months ago they finally started restrictions. Didn't really effect
me since we are on a well and have been watching our water use anyway. Well
I kept telling a friend who was whining about not being about to wash his

last night I took my own advice. I got home a little early and it was

me what I had been up to since she didn't believe that I was going to wash
the Jeep and told her my Jeep was now clean and in the rinse cycle. She
didn't believe me so she went and looked out the window. After she looked

Scott,

One suggestion would be to get a copy of the repair estimate, see what it
says. Go to said shop, talk to them. Also, if you are thinking that the guy
is trying to line his pockets, have you fiance pay the shop directly
meaning have her pay the bill for her responsible part in case he is having
other work done.

Joe,

I'm all for this, as long as the guy actually gets it fixed. I had a small
parking thing with a geo tracker a couple of years ago. I was trying to fit
in a parking spot that was a bit too tight, and put a dent the size of a
half dollar in the rear fender with the tube bumper. It was my brother's
neighbor, so I felt I should do the right thing. Keeping in mind that the
tracker was at least 4 different colors, and had numerous other dents, I
offered $250 cash to just let it slide. The girl insisted on going after my
insurance, to the tune of $1150. Each time I go see my brother I am forced
to look at the tracker, which still remains unfixed and multiple colors. I
am still paying a higher insurance premium for another year, and the *****
never got it fixed.

If this guy decides to go after her insurance and then goes on a mod spree
instead of fixing it, that's not right.

I agree with Joe here but if you think he is trying to get you for both
accidents then insist on seeing the quote. The quote will tell you where the
repairs are being made. I will bet if you demand to see the quote before
paying he may just go away.

Hi Scott,

I have a few thoughts since you ask <grin>... whether his insurance would
cover it all with just a small deductible or not, your fiancé is responsible
and should pay the charges to fix the damage she caused; regardless of the
estimate. The person who had their Jeep damaged by her driving has the
right to take their Jeep anywhere they like to have it repaired... from Joe
Schmoe's garage and barbershop to Scottsdale Porsche Paint and Body.
She does however, have a right to see the estimate to ensure that it is
legitimate AND to call the body shop to ensure that the numbers were not
fabricated.

Also... asking for reasonably priced shops makes me think that the owner of
the Jeep that was damaged is giving her a choice... not something I would do
were I the one with the damage. I would take my rig to a place I felt
comfortable with, regardless of the price... I certainly wouldn't let the
person who damaged my vehicle pick the repair shop.

Sometimes lessons are difficult to learn and $1550 might actually be a
pretty cheap lesson... think about her accidentally starting her rig with it
in gear on a trail run... near a cliff... get my drift?

My advise to your fiancé is to bite the bullet and do the right thing,
which, in this case, is to let the guy with the damaged Jeep get it fixed
where he wants to and have her make sure the estimate is real. Note... When
I say real, I mean only for the damage she caused... and this has nothing to
do with the cost; she should pay whatever it costs.

Tell her by doing the right thing and making it easy for the driver with the
bent rig... she'll be more enlightened in the next life (and less likely to
come back as a cricket). <grin> The good Karma is worth the cost of the
repairs. <smile>

Take care,

Joe West

A big thanks to Barry!

Everytime I seem to be hard on my TJ on the rocks lately I seem to experience my steering wheel being off when I get back on the road after being aired up. In the spring I bent my front adjustable track bar and Chris Krieg helped me get everything dialed back in. We couldn't see where I had bent it, but after measuring we had determined the axle had shifted.

This past weekend I ran in the rock garden (optional) on Turkey Creek and it was probably the most challenging stuff I've done in my TJ. I ran it with open diffs, got through it just fine with some excellent spotting from Jason LaLiberty and Bob Peck. After airing up in Black Canyon I cranked along on the freeway and noticed that the wheel was off again (steering wheel).

My neighbor helped me measure my Toe, was OK. I measured to see if my front axle was centered, was all ok. Tie Rod, Track bar and Drag link all looked out. I checked all bolts, etc were tight.

I called Barry Monday morning and asked if I should purchase a new track bar thinking perhaps I may have bent it again. Barry said to stop by and we'll take a look at it. He not only took a look at it, but went to the trouble of going back into the warehouse to pull out a brand new track bar and we put it up against the existing one I have on my Jeep and all the bends look the same. He said that it's a CJ/YJ/TJ thing for the steering wheel to be off after being hard on the rocks.

Thought I'd pass this info on. Thanks again Barry! It's great to have an honest person to deal with and not have to worry about someone selling you parts you don't need.

Jake,

Even though you cannot see it... your trackbar *is* bending. If you want to prove it to yourself... consider which way your axle is shifted. Notice how it is ALWAYS shifted towards the driver's side? Here's why... when your trackbar bends if effectively becomes shorter. When your trackbar becomes shorter it pulls the axle towards the frame on the driver's side. Check the measurements and I think you'll find that your axle is shifted towards the driver's side.

Second thing... it is not a TJ thing for this to happen. It does however, happen on TJs who have their front track bars beginning to pretzel. There was a time when I ALWAYS had the same thing happen after a difficult run... finally, my front trackbar bent enough where it was obvious and I replaced it with RE's best extreme duty, excessive duty, hyper-sparc duty (or whatever stupid name they are calling their latest product). Now? Even after I ran axle alley the steering is centered... I have yet to have the problem since upgrading my front track bar.

When you get tired of adjusting your drag link to re-center your steering wheel, go out and get RE's hyper-extra-special-duty front track bar and you'll likely not have to re-center your steering wheel nearly so often. Barry is being nice by trying to save you some bucks... and you probably don't need one yet... but you will.

One last thing... make sure that you keep your frame-side front track bar mount tight... they seem to have a way of working loose on a regular basis.

Kind Regards,

Joe West

Price: $75.00

This is Tuffy's overhead console that mounts between the rollbar and the windshield. It has two lockable compartments for a radio or CB or whatever else. Go to Joe's kill switch clinic so they can't steal your Jeep and lock your CB up tight with this so they can't steal it.

my rig all the time in the rain. my kids love doing it! usually when i rains
out here in the summer it is still about 100 degrees. the neighbors sit on
the front porch drinkin beer and laugh at me. we'll see who's laughing when
i save $5 on my next water bill!!! "Hey guys... let me buy you a beer with
the $5 i saved!!"

Subject: Coves clean up

Ok here is some more info. The Forest Service wants to know who is all out
helping with this clean up. So Mike Baney will be at the green gate meeting
everyone where you can sign a sheet for the Forest Service, put your name in
for the door prize drawing and purchase raffle tickets for the 50/50 food
raffle (tickets are $2 each and you may purchase as many as you want). The
winner of the raffle gets the left over money after the food bill has been
paid. With as many folks that have signed up this should be a good chunk of
cash.

Base camp will be at the first cover I will have a striped EZ up with a
table under it. There will be the drawing boxes where you may drop off your
raffle tickets and sign up sheets for each cove. I would like to get one
leader for each cove. When you get to the first cove you sign up for the
cove you would like to help clean. This way everyone can see how many are at
each cover. There will be signs directing everyone to each of the four
covers. I will lead a small group to the hidden cove to clean it up. The
Forest service have their barge and will bring it to each cove for trash bag
removal so we should just pile all the bags by the water for when the barge
gets there.

We will have two grills and two cooks, There will be folding tables and
chairs for everyone to use. The general CB channel and channel for cove 1
will be 7. For cover 2 use channel 10, cover 3 use channel 12, for cove four
use channel 14 and for the hidden cove we will use channel 16. There are 94
people signed up for this run which will great too much talk for one CB
channel that is why the separate channels for each cove.

There is a winter storm moving in this weekend so it may be a bit chilly
(The high for the day is 70) so dress appropriately. Thanks and see you all
out there.
