Gang up on the poor defenseless Tequila drinkin' drunk guy!
Wassa matter, can't pick on some poor unsuspecting sober fool?
Jay, you are forgiven. Neal on the other hand, was being facetious, and
egging me on, so I will reply:

Neal, perhaps you'd like to explain to the group why you feel "unqualified"
to teach?
Ok, I'll spare you and inform them.
Neal forgets minor details like tightening nuts and bolts, so they fall off
his rig like limbs off a leper on a stagecoach ride. Shoot, he's the only
guy I know who thinks the 4th bolt in a Saginaw box is "Optional"(Jamboree)
Ohh, yeah, and his stuff breaks running the Spook Rally. Spring bolt
(Probably Grade 2). Let's not forget the drill shavings in the high PSI fuel
pump that bought him a free ride back to camp at the end of Booper's tow
strap!

What's this got to do with his welding? Nothing. Personally, I think his dad
does all that because it never breaks....

A big thanks to Barry!

Everytime I seem to be hard on my TJ on the rocks lately I seem to experience my steering wheel being off when I get back on the road after being aired up. In the spring I bent my front adjustable track bar and Chris Krieg helped me get everything dialed back in. We couldn't see where I had bent it, but after measuring we had determined the axle had shifted.

This past weekend I ran in the rock garden (optional) on Turkey Creek and it was probably the most challenging stuff I've done in my TJ. I ran it with open diffs, got through it just fine with some excellent spotting from Jason LaLiberty and Bob Peck. After airing up in Black Canyon I cranked along on the freeway and noticed that the wheel was off again (steering wheel).

My neighbor helped me measure my Toe, was OK. I measured to see if my front axle was centered, was all ok. Tie Rod, Track bar and Drag link all looked out. I checked all bolts, etc were tight.

I called Barry Monday morning and asked if I should purchase a new track bar thinking perhaps I may have bent it again. Barry said to stop by and we'll take a look at it. He not only took a look at it, but went to the trouble of going back into the warehouse to pull out a brand new track bar and we put it up against the existing one I have on my Jeep and all the bends look the same. He said that it's a CJ/YJ/TJ thing for the steering wheel to be off after being hard on the rocks.

Thought I'd pass this info on. Thanks again Barry! It's great to have an honest person to deal with and not have to worry about someone selling you parts you don't need.

No way!
My luck I'll get sued when someone booger welds their Jeep together and it
kills somebody.
Besides, learning to weld is not something you can pick up in one or two
classes.
There are those who go to college for it for a whole semester only to find a
Pigeon with the runs can weld better with it's Butt than they can.

No Neal, I'm not referring to you.....

When I was in the Army they were getting rid of the Gamma Goat because it flipped easily. When we got our hummers in 1986, they were much more powerful than any of our other vehicles, except for the deuce and a half. When we went to Korea in 1987 for Team Spirit, we used the hummer to pull up our trucks with communications vans and generator trailers up to the top of the mountain in the snow. I don't know about the commercial hummer, but the military hummer (H.M.M.W.V.) was great!

Except for my 2002 Toyota Land Cruiser&

Could kick a Hummers butt coming and going&.

Now& I was in the Army BEFORE Hummers even existed& anyone here ever heard of a Gamma Goat?

Now theres a REAL soldiers offroad vehicle (after the M151A1, the current Jeep during my tour of duty).

There is NOTHING on the market that comes close to the out-of-the-box ALL AROUND capabilities of the Hummer.

Subject: Your Trackbar *IS* bending... was RE: 4 Wheeler's Supply

Jake,

Even though you cannot see it& your trackbar *is* bending. If you want to prove it to yourself& consider which way your axle is shifted. Notice how it is ALWAYS shifted towards the drivers side? Heres why& when your trackbar bends if effectively becomes shorter. When your trackbar becomes shorter it pulls the axle towards the frame on the drivers side. Check the measurements and I think youll find that your axle is shifted towards the drivers side.

Second thing& it is not a TJ thing for this to happen. It does however, happen on TJs who have their front track bars beginning to pretzel. There was a time when I ALWAYS had the same thing happen after a difficult run& finally, my front trackbar bent enough where it was obvious and I replaced it with REs best extreme duty, excessive duty, hyper-sparc duty (or whatever stupid name they are calling their latest product). Now? Even after I ran axle alley the steering is centered& I have yet to have the problem since upgrading my front track bar.

When you get tired of adjusting your drag link to re-center your steering wheel, go out and get REs hyper-extra-special-duty front track bar and youll likely not have to re-center your steering wheel nearly so often. Barry is being nice by trying to save you some bucks& and you probably dont need one yet& but you will.

One last thing& make sure that you keep your frame-side front track bar mount tight& they seem to have a way of working loose on a regular basis.

Kind Regards,

Joe West

A 20 minute lesson from Bill M a couple years ago and I'm dangerous! So
far none of my welds have failed. I welded up my rear axle brackets and
fabricated the 4 link rear recently with a 220V wirefeed.

I second the recommendation that Bill give a lesson. Of course only if
he is willing....

forgiven. Neal on the other hand, was being facetious, and egging me on,
so I will reply:

Neal, perhaps you'd like to explain to the group why you feel
"unqualified" to teach? Ok, I'll spare you and inform them. Neal forgets
minor details like tightening nuts and bolts, so they fall off his rig
like limbs off a leper on a stagecoach ride. Shoot, he's the only guy I
know who thinks the 4th bolt in a Saginaw box is "Optional"(Jamboree)
Ohh, yeah, and his stuff breaks running the Spook Rally. Spring bolt
(Probably Grade 2). Let's not forget the drill shavings in the high PSI
fuel pump that bought him a free ride back to camp at the end of
Booper's tow strap!

What's this got to do with his welding? Nothing. Personally, I think his
dad does all that because it never breaks....

Joe,

That was my old RE standard duty trackbar. It's seen alot of abuse prior to the installation on Jakes Jeep. Like Joe, I run an RE Extreme Duty front trackbar.

Jake - it may be fatigued.

Joe West

Jake

I've got a system with the wife figured out. She drives while I'm spotting. When I turn around and concentrate on walking she stops. Then I turn around (or pick myself up) and she continues to move forward.

It seems to cut down on 50% of my stumbles, LOL.

Jake,
Thanks for the kind words about your spotters. But is was more challenging spotting Jason, while he spotted you.

"Jason, watch out for that big rock behind you . . . . . . . oh never mind, just pick yourself up and hope that Jake didn't hit anything too hard while you were on the ground" hehehe

Still waiting for Jason's Trip ("trip") Report on Turkey Creek.

Ok, here are my two cents worth, my insurance company would cover it, I am sure most will you were at fault. Now if you would have run if off a cliff, that might be another story but thank heaven we dont have to or would ever have to cross that bridge. Your g/f's insurance should have to pay for it as she was the "driver" at the time. As for the cost, I think that is total BS, you could buy a new door for that. As to the comment you could have the whole think painted, yeah, maybe at Earl Sheib's or MAACO but a quality paint job would run over $2000 alone, I can attest to that. Sounds like the other damage might be included in that figure. If you turn it over to your or your g/f insurance company, they will have their own adjuster look at it. If the other driver has given you the choice to have it repaired at a reputable shop that you pick, then at least get a 2nd estimate and make sure you are there when the estimate is done so you can see what they are talking about. I had a BAD dent fixed on one of my doors and body work, paint and labor from one of the higher priced but quality shops in my area only charged me $380. Now the flare you can get at most 4x4 shops and installed for I would think less than $75. Most of the bone yards I know of want to sell the entire set of flares, not just one. I wish you the best of luck but in any case another member said it right when he stated "you need to do the right thing" and the right thing is to take care of one of your fellow wheelers.

IMHO the parts price seems high but the labor price seems about
right. Have you looked at the invoice to make sure the it's an
actual estimate??? For paint and body work I'm sure it can add up
real fast. Here's a question, will the insurance company cover a
claim like this without having a police officer report?? Maybe for
insurance reasons it might be better to pay out on this rather than
report it....

just a thought
