Last time I found myself in 3 wheel drive it was because my axle snapped
right where it enters the carrier. It was one of the heavy-duty Warn
D30 axles, too... I have a lock-right in the front. If you still have
3 wheel drive, and there are no noises coming from the front diff, I'd
suspect that the locker isn't the problem...

I think this is a great idea for the group and myself!!! Can never have too
much knowledge on something.

The question is...........welding being such an "individual" kind of
expertise.............who is a good person to give the class? Of all the
people I have met that say they can weld, the really GOOD one are very modest
about their skills and would rarely say they are an expert in order to give a
class.

Therefore, I would like to vote for the following individuals (as I have
experience with their work and abilities. Sorry if I offend someone on the
list who is also an excellent welder, but I don't know you. If I saw your
work, you too would be on the list.) And I CERTAINLY do not intend to speak
for these people. These are just ones that I thought would make a good entry
for this class. I would expect them to step up if they are interested.

In no particular order:
1) Hunter (Hunter Offroad)
2) Troy and cohorts at Toys By Troy
3) 4Wheeler's Supply (Anyone in their fab shop!!).

Again, I am sure there are others on the list that are VERY good welders. I
just don't know who you are, so I can't list you. Feel free to throw your hat
in the ring if you want. These are just ones off the top of my head that I
KNOW are very good welders with LOTS of experience.

ps: Does Bill Mish do welding? I once heard he was good too! <big grin> More
Tequila........more tequila......beads r wookin good now......

What kind and year of Jeep are you talking about? YJ with vac disconnect on front axle? If so, start checking for a melted fitting, busted line or line that has popped off a connector.

All 3 have happened to me. Good thing is that the most expensive fix has been about $40 for a new vac harness. Melted connectors and new vac line (rubber) is about $5 to fix. Just start at one end of the system and start checking lines/connections.

If you're not hearing lotsa bad noises along with this 3wd problem...take that as a good sign, too!

Good luck!

Hey Gang, well last weekend I finally put on my 3" lift... YAHOO
got the OK from the wife she was heading out of town, so I went to my
buddy Libo's house and we started wrenching. We started on the front
at about 9:45- 10:00 and we were on our way. we were just about done
and cRacK Bam the rain came down... so there i sit looking out my
buddys back window when its raining Jeep on blocks,no wheels, the
only thing left on the front was to tighted the sway bar down.. so
there i sit.... and sit... THEN the rain lets up I say fawk-it and
go out to finish. by the time i got the wheels on and everything
moved to the back of the Jeep the ground was dry and ready to go..
we started on the back with no issues, the track bar re-locater gave
us a problem but my buddy is pretty crafty and he came up with the
solution to fix the issue. all and all it was fairly easy its nice
to have a buddy around to help out.. the Jeep is riding nice and I
havent had any problems so now its time for the next mod :-)

This weekend in the dunes, my fiance turned the key to my Jeep with
it in gear and it went forward a few feet into the side of another
Jeep. My tow hook scraped the paint off the fender flare and dented
the passenger side front fender of the other TJ right near the top of
the fender. He got a quote today and said that it is $750 for parts
and $800 for labor to repair it!!! I just wanted to check on this but
would her insurance cover an accident that happened offroad? He
backed into something with it the next day and damaged the back
fender. I'm not sure if he is trying to make her pay for the whole
thing. I would think that his insurance would cover it all and he'd
only have to pay one deductable. Any thoughts???

Also, what are some reasonably priced shops to suggest if she ends up
having to pay this out of pocket? In an offroad accident, can he even
make her pay for it if she doesn't want to? She does want to take
care of it, but $1,550 for a small dent and a fender flair...come on!

2000 Viking Camp trailer Model 1906 Saga has been kept in the garage when not in use. This trailer is in very good shape. It also has been sprung over and larger 13” tires installed by the Dealer so it is covered under warrantee. It will sleep 6 as long as two are kids. I am getting rid of it as I plan on getting a car hauler for the YJ and I cannot tow bothJ. It has a canopy and icebox with plenty of storage and a water tank. Indoor-outdoor stove, propane tank, battery for lights. I towed it behind my YJ and had no trouble at all. Flexy and Lisa used it for the Jamboree and pulled it behind the XJ. It tows very easy. Hi Scott,

I have a few thoughts since you ask <grin>... whether his insurance would
cover it all with just a small deductible or not, your fiancé is responsible
and should pay the charges to fix the damage she caused; regardless of the
estimate. The person who had their Jeep damaged by her driving has the
right to take their Jeep anywhere they like to have it repaired... from Joe
Schmoe's garage and barbershop to Scottsdale Porsche Paint and Body.
She does however, have a right to see the estimate to ensure that it is
legitimate AND to call the body shop to ensure that the numbers were not
fabricated.

Also... asking for reasonably priced shops makes me think that the owner of
the Jeep that was damaged is giving her a choice... not something I would do
were I the one with the damage. I would take my rig to a place I felt
comfortable with, regardless of the price... I certainly wouldn't let the
person who damaged my vehicle pick the repair shop.

Sometimes lessons are difficult to learn and $1550 might actually be a
pretty cheap lesson... think about her accidentally starting her rig with it
in gear on a trail run... near a cliff... get my drift?

My advise to your fiancé is to bite the bullet and do the right thing,
which, in this case, is to let the guy with the damaged Jeep get it fixed
where he wants to and have her make sure the estimate is real. Note... When
I say real, I mean only for the damage she caused... and this has nothing to
do with the cost; she should pay whatever it costs.

Tell her by doing the right thing and making it easy for the driver with the
bent rig... she'll be more enlightened in the next life (and less likely to
come back as a cricket). <grin> The good Karma is worth the cost of the
repairs. <smile>

Take care,

Joe West

I doubt they'll cover it unless he makes up some story to the insurance. As far as the price goes, that is ridiculous. for that price he could get bodywork and a full paint job. I think somebody is pulling your leg and your wallet. If you would like, I could make some calls to see how much a fender and fender flare will cost (at my cost and discount) and I could get back to you. if you could get me the paint code from the guys jeep, I could get it made up for you a lot cheaper then the shop or dealership could do it. I personally think the guy just wants some extra money in his pocket.

I live out in Surprise, Ashton Ranch, and have tools and air tools and the
room to work on it. I've never done a complete lift on a TJ, just spacers
and shocks.......but, I bet it's basically the same as my ZJ which I've had
apart several times. I work at night also, but have weekends off. This
weekend is Nascar weekend, so I probably wont be around much. Do you have
Monday off? I might be able to help you out then. Let me know.

A big thanks to Barry!

Everytime I seem to be hard on my TJ on the rocks lately I seem to experience my steering wheel being off when I get back on the road after being aired up. In the spring I bent my front adjustable track bar and Chris Krieg helped me get everything dialed back in. We couldn't see where I had bent it, but after measuring we had determined the axle had shifted.

This past weekend I ran in the rock garden (optional) on Turkey Creek and it was probably the most challenging stuff I've done in my TJ. I ran it with open diffs, got through it just fine with some excellent spotting from Jason LaLiberty and Bob Peck. After airing up in Black Canyon I cranked along on the freeway and noticed that the wheel was off again (steering wheel).

My neighbor helped me measure my Toe, was OK. I measured to see if my front axle was centered, was all ok. Tie Rod, Track bar and Drag link all looked out. I checked all bolts, etc were tight.

I called Barry Monday morning and asked if I should purchase a new track bar thinking perhaps I may have bent it again. Barry said to stop by and we'll take a look at it. He not only took a look at it, but went to the trouble of going back into the warehouse to pull out a brand new track bar and we put it up against the existing one I have on my Jeep and all the bends look the same. He said that it's a CJ/YJ/TJ thing for the steering wheel to be off after being hard on the rocks.

Thought I'd pass this info on. Thanks again Barry! It's great to have an honest person to deal with and not have to worry about someone selling you parts you don't need.

Jake
