Here is a short list of things to check that can be wrong.

1) Check the fuse to the TCM. If the tranny computer doesn't have any power then it can't turn the shift solenoids on or off can it?

2) Make sure the TCM is plugged into the harness.

3) There are two 8 way plugs that run from the top of the transmision and tie into the XJ harness. The black one is the solenoid control wires, the gray one is the TRS wires. If either of these is disconnected or not fully connected it won't shift.

4) There could be a faulty TRS (transmision range sensor)

5) There could be a faulty TCM.

6) The solenoids are dead and not shifting the transmission.

Those are the first 6 things I would check.

It's kind of cool being a TJ owner helping XJ owners with their tranny problems.

If you want any help let me know.

Did you use the Eldo calipers from the rear of an Eldo with 4 wheel discs? The ones with the parking brake lever that turns a worm gear to actuate the piston for your parking brake? I hope you have better luck than me and a few other guys I know that did the Warn conversion. Those calipers if they are the same ones that we used (Warn gave us a choice, Caddy if you wanted or needed and ebrake and S-10 if you didnt), are trouble. I went thru 3 sets in 3 years. I spoke with several mechanics and two brake shops and they said that the Caddy brakes were a problem in the late 70's early 80's when they were 1st introduced and remain a problem, one of the reasons GM went to a different design. It seems the worm gear gets f'd up and your braking power and efficiency deteriorate rapidly if not all of a sudden. I got so frustrated with mine I went back to drums (the 10' ones from a ZJ) and havent had such good brakes since before I did the Warn conversion to my YJ and I have excellent stopping power with 35's. I guess if me or someone figures out the spacer problem (where to get) and I can figure out what kind of rotor to use with my 5x5.5 bolt pattern and full floater with rear locking hubs, I might go back to disc's again using the ZJ set up.

I did a swap like this last week on an XJ D44 . Pulled the drum
backing plates and placed spacers behind the flange & seal retainer
to keep the seal in the same area. Used TJ discs on the outside
of the flange with Eldo calipers & pads. GM pattern brackets from
Lou Feger's hold the calipers in place. An absolute breeze of a swap.

Randy,

That's why we kill the fuel pump and not the starter... they can jump the
starter all they want and they ain't goin no where when the fuel pump is
dead.
<grin>

Of course... on the older vehicles with mechanical fuel pumps you can kill
the starter OR kill the power to the coil... either of these, combined with
a hood lock will keep the bad guy from running off with your rig.

On CJ/YJ/TJ and pre CJ vehicles, I recommend the hood lock variety kill
switch; a bit longer to install but it keeps everything under your hood
where it should be.

I use to use kill switches a long time ago. Now I use a parameter sensor
that sets off my alarm and cuts out the ignition. I have it set up so that
it not only interrupts the power to the starter solenoid but it also cuts
out the power to the coil. I did this incase the would be thief tries to
short across the started solenoid. If you have a kill switch and no alarm
the would be thief has time to search for a way to start you jeep. They most
likely will not stick around if your alarm is blazing away and there is no
quick way of starting your jeep.

Hey everyone, I went to the last clinic and I'll tell you it was easy, Joe

It's easy to activate and well hidden (I did the non-hood lock one).

I've been keeping fairly quiet on this for a while, but it's time for me to make a comment. I was in the US army, and had the fortune to drive a Hummer all over the place! Looking back, I can not think of one time I was in a position that in retrospect any of my jeeps would have done better. I felt VERY safe in the Hummer, though a bit heavy, and wide, it performs VERY well. There is NOTHING on the market that comes close to the out-of-the-box ALL AROUND capabilities of the Hummer. Granted, it wont fit in some of the places that the Jeeps will, but so far, I haven't seen anyplace in FJ that I wouldn't take one, and there are places I'd bet the Hummer would shine that would give a Jeep fits if not actually stop it.

Why don't we just worry about our Jeeps, and quit bashing all the 'other' vehicles...it's not very productive.

Yesterday and today on Car & Driver, that is aired on TNN, they had a test
drive of the new H2. The report went on about how great these things were
and how they were "the 2nd best production 4x4 by any company, the first
best being the full size Hummer." WTF???? They should pictures of the thing
going over two foot bumps and a wheel lifting off the ground. All this for
$50,000, wow.... Are they even paying attention to what they are doing?
I watched the repeat, from yesterday, of the show to make sure I heard
everything correct and sure enough, I did. I wonder if these people have
driven a Rubicon or tried to get the lanky thing through a canyon? I used to
give Car & Driver some credibility, that's gone.
Just wondering if anyone else saw it. I might drop them a note.

Subject: Onboard air

I need to get set up with some on board air, and I have checked
out Kilby's site. My question is kind of vague, but has anyone
bought stuff from Kilby and gotten everything they needed from him,
or should I buy just the mounting bracket, compressor and pulley from
him and get all of my fittings and tank, pressure switch, guage, etc.
from a local shop? It seems like a bracket for $20 and a compressor
(new) for $190, and pulley/clutch for $110 makes the rest of the set-
up get kind of spendy by the time it's all added up. It's time to
get rigged up with air, but how should I do it in my '98 2.5L TJ?
Thanks for any help or advice.

Lachlan

Lachlan,

I purchased the bracket and pulley setup from Brad (Kilby) and put the rest
of the stuff together myself locally. You can find new Compressors less
expensive than Brad sells them for here locally and you won't have the
shipping charges (but you will have to pay tax). I would absolutely not
recommend that you purchase the tanks, fittings, pressure switches through
Brad because they are very simple to put together from Home Depot (except
for the pressure switch, and I don't like the one Brad sells.

Go for the mounting kit and leave the rest behind. If you are interested
where I purchased the compressor and clutch assembly, let me know and I'll
look it up.
BTW... Brad is a GREAT standup kind of guy and I'd highly recommend his
products; especially the onboard air and gas tank skid.

Kind Regards,

Joe West
