Is Box Canyon near Florence reasonably doable in a stock jeep? I have Friday the 7th of March off work and am looking for a trail to run, that one looked cool. Anyone been out there lately? Anyone else have that day off?

I went through there last Saturday night and it was pretty fun trail with the water flowing through there. Enjoy!

Great, thanks for the info! I look forward to running the trail. If anyone else has that day off and has any interest, let me know.

There are a couple of spots that will be fun but if I can do it in my Liberty on 31s you shouldn't have a problem. And yeah the water flowing thru the canyon last weekend was a nice change from the normally dry bottom:

Here's a link to some photos of our run this last Saturday (http://www.lostkjs.com/forum/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=29812&highlight=) - we went in to Martinez Cabin then came out and went down to the river and out Walnut Canyon.

Great! I am glad to have some company. What time sounds good to you guys? Meet up at say 9 or 10? One caveat, I sent off for the state trust land rec permit just a few days ago. Anyone know if they are pretty good at getting those back in a timely fashion or am I kidding myself thinking it will be here in time.

9:00 at mcdonalds in florence, as far as the permit go's don't
know about time it takes, we went down to the office and picked
it up, we might be able for you to use one of our's depending
on who is going with us, don't know if that's legal maybe
someone on here can tell us.

Right on, 9 oclock it is. With any luck the thing will get back to me in time and we won't have to worry about it...

My wife and I will be there. Are we starting from the flagpole or the tracks?
The permit takes too long by mail. Better off going downtown for the permit.
See you at 0900 at the golden arches.(White JK)

Sounds like we are going to have a good crowd. I hope nobody minds that I am a newbie coming along. The permit came today, less than a week turn around, not too bad for a government agency. I know I started the thread for the run, but I haven't done it before, so if someone would be willing to be the trail leader or whatever, that would be great. I was just going to go off the description in the Wells book. See you all at McD's, 9:00.

No problem, I can take the lead if you like. I've got a hand held radio. If you've got one bring one and water. There are a few good stops on the way. If you want, we can stop at Martinez cabin for lunch. the trip can take anywhere from 2-4 hours depending on what the group decides.
Directions to McDonalds:
from the 60 going east, take a right on the 79 south at Florence junction, continue about 13 miles to Florence. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility is on the right, continue 3 miles past railroad tracks to Mcdonalds on the left. You will pass a prison on the left right before Mcdonalds. The road next to the railroad tracks on the left will be our exit point. We will start at the flagpole. you will pass it 5 miles from the junction on the left.

Handhelp radio, you mean a basic 2-way radio that you can get at radio shack, or a CB?

Box Canyon is a great trail, especially when there's a bit of water. I ran it in a stock '00 TJ with 31" BFG ATs and had no problems except for a tiny scrape on my lower right front control arm when I went over the rock mentioned above (no damage done). May want to have someone spot you when you get to it. Enjoy the trail!

regular 2-way.
you should be good over that rock. I scraped that rock stock. no damage. just stay to the far right and you should be good. I'll spot you. We can stop and you can watch me do it first. that s the only major hurdle.

Well...I invited my friend but has to work tomorrow so he is going to play hooky the first half of the day and hit the Box Canyon trail with me and then head into work after. Only problem is he and I need to start earlier than 09:00 if he is to get to work in the afternoon, so we are going to meet at 07:00 at McD's in Florence and head out then...sunrise is at 06:30 tomorrow.
I doubt we will get to hang out with those starting at 09:00 since we will have a 2 hour head start, but you never know if we stop on the trail a few times.
I wouldn't ask you guys to change the start time, but if anyone wants to get an earlier start, you're welcome to join us and meet at 07:00 at McD's. I would rather have some one lead us through, but shouldn't be a problem if we are alone as I will be bringing my GPS and trail book that has GPS coords.
Thanks and sorry that we have special needs, but still hoping I get to wheel with you guys some time. Chris

Sounds like the area is something that takes more than a day to explore. You will have to show me around some other spots besides the main trail sometime.

There is an old cabin at the beginning of the trail thats from the 1800s. Before Martinez cabin there is a cave that was used as a bordello and cantina. Martinez cabin is just a few miles off the trail. Also there is a stagecoach depot from the 1800's that is still in tact with a well. Just past the rocky part there is an old copper/gold mine we can stop at. There is a lot of history through that area and the landscape is awesome.

Had a great time today running my rig through the box. Thanks AZDIRTJK and azorr for leading/setting up the run. BTW, Dave and I took pics of the BS gate that the trail book told us to go through based on its directions, mileage markers, and GPS coords...the gate that caused us to get lost this morning. I will be posting it up later to warn others that have this trail book so they dont make same mistake. Chris

Thanks everyone I really enjoyed the run today. Sorry if we missed anyone, we waited at McD's for a while this morning. Thanks AZDIRTJK and Mikegb for teaching me a thing or two. Working on posting pictures up, hopefully soon. Looking forward to seeing some of the pictures you got of my driving.
