I am willing to bet 100 pesos that the Hummer was not designed
with even the littlest bit of rock crawling in mind. I am sure that
equipment and personnel were among the things intended to be carried
in them. That being said, I doubt that any of us would want to drive
over a land mine in any Jeep. The Hummer can't flex, but there is
actually a whole different world out there when talking about four
wheel drive. I think that the kind of thinking that went into the
original Hummer, and now the H2, albeit made by GM, are just what the
4x4 industry needs to keep the public interested. How many other
4x4s get as much attention as a Hummer, regardless of color or
model? Jeeps, you say? Ok, there's one. Any others that garner
such a high amount of ogling from almost everybody, wherever you go?
Hummers are not good in the rocks, but they are great in the cargo
department. I think that they get stuck on trails because good ol'
Captain Visa thinks that just because he can buy a Hummer it will
make him an instant offroad hero. We all know that Billy Bob can
outdrive him in a 2WD Chevette, but that's another story for another
time...

Lachlan "I like Hummers, don't you?" MacLean LOL!

Mike,

Yep its all good fun. I too have never been on the trail with any Libertys. I guess I have yet to meet one thats been modded out enough to run with us. I'm sure we will eventually see everything from front solid axle swaps to anything you can imagine.

Way to go Scott! I laughed my *** off on that one, the Pubicon edition.....LOL Now having said that, I do not have any experience with the KJ, nor have I ever driven one or seen on in action off-road but I can tell you that I have sat in the drivers seat of more than one at car shows (most recently at the Az state fair) and they have the most uncomfortable front seats, man they are just HARD! On the other hand I have read many great reviews of its off-road capabilities as a stock "SUV" (just dont get the new ones as they were lowered an inch) and I have talked to Rusty of Rustys Off Road and seen his and it seems as if it might be as capable (with Rustys mods) as the new H2 Hummer ( I just had to get that on in there ).

Anyone got any secrets or suggestions for cleaning out all of the
dust that accumulates in a jeep after an outing. Is it just a case
of removing the dash and associated parts and cleaning everyting
out? After a run I did on Sunday there is dust everywhere. I
suppose everyone is going to tell me not to be lazy and remove the
dash to clean and wipe everything down. Also what inspections does
everyone do after a trail ride? I usually inspect my control arms (I
have a TJ), axles, driveshafts etc. What does everyone else do?

If it was from a Quadratrac equipped vehicle, then the center section is
offset and it probably will not be a good choice to use in your YJ.

Well I dont know but I've been thinkin, a KJ just might be the next Jeep in my stable. The one I saw at the state fair, nicely equipped was $4.000 less than the TJ next to it (no it wasnt a Rubicon one). Looks like the KJ has a lot of value and potential for someone that needs something a little more than a Wrangler and a little less than a ZJ/WJ. I do know one thing, I need to finish the 3 Jeep projects I am working now before I attempt to tackle another one......

Air compressor + blow gun. Open both doors and make sure you blow into
the side that is upwind if there is a breeze. I blast the entire
interior. Swat the seat materials as you direct some air towards them.
Smacking them clouds up the dust and the compressed air blows it away
from you. If you are sensitive to dust wear a dust mask or hold your
breath.

I recommend inspecting all of the control arm brackets and track bar
brackets. These are a common failure point on TJ's. Just crawl around
under there and look for anything unusual. Listen close for noises on
the trail and try to track them down and fix them.

Compressed air! Your best friend for cleaning out the Jeep!

While checking your control arms, make sure you check the brackets where
they mount.....they do crack and that is NO fun to have happen when you
are on the road or the trail.

After the Jamboree 2002 in the Florence Junction area, my Jeep was so
dusty I even steam cleaned the engine (AzVJC members advised me to
cover the battery, alternator, computer & connections, air intake and
throttle position sensor). A little extreme, but it SPARKLES!

Inside the cabin, I used a vacuum cleaner with the brush attachment
(NOT the vacuum cleaners at a car wash), followed by Armor-all wipes
and good old fashioned rags. I did not remove the dash - I figure if
dust can just get hit from wind, a good reverse wind (vacuum cleaner)
can get it out. On 1999 Jeeps for one, the instrument panel is
modular; has just a plug-in connector - no wiring harness as such; so
dust should not affect it (IMO).

If all else fails, just lift the Jeep and shake it a few times. :)

This has worked really well for me in the past. Grab your garden hose with
the tap open WIDE OPEN. Then proceed to spray EVERYTHING inside. One
caution, be sure to pull the drain plugs in the floor boards so the water
that collects in the floor boards doesn't get too high and flow over the
sides. This works to flush all of the dust down to the floor boards where it
simply flows out the drain holes. This works really well too for cleaning
engine bays and underside. Only one $3.00 tool need. A hose sprayer nozzle.

But if you have a pretty TJ..............you better try the compressed air
idea. One caution: You might find your cup holders full of water with the
above method and thereby making them unusable! :-)

<big grin> I just couldn't resist this one...................

I saw a green Wrangler at the sand drags at Gecko Road in Glamis on

passed you on the right near the start of the drags in a white TJ

Subject: Re: What was that guy's name...

The other guy is Sean Speer, a fellow co-worker who is sitting 5 feet
away from me right now. He is NOT related to Mark Speer.

Subject: Degree shims??

I was wondering what the negitives are to using degree shims on a front axle. Here's the problem. I have a narrow d30 mounted to 2.5" Rancho springs on the front of my 2a. With this setup the pinion points up and the knuckles are setting at about 0* caster.

Thanks
Keith

Subject: Coke Oven Run/ Shake down

Well all I can say is... WOW! I never knew what a difference a lift would make. I have been running the Coke oven trail for about 4 years now and there has always been some hills I just couldn't get up. This time not only did I get up them I made it look easy. It was also kinda weird not to hear all my skids scraping. The only thing I hit was my rear bumper...

As for the run, It wasn't posted because it started as a family run but I invited some people at the last moment. I had 4 Jeeps, one Toy and a F350 crew cab show up to run out to the Ovens.
Anthony Celaya and Chris(first time out) in his YJ
Ruben Aviles in his TJ
Gary Oglesby in his XJ
Dennis McNeeley with DJ (his son) and Rob(my dad) in his F350
Philip Leblanc and Paul(his Brother) in his 89 Toy
Me with Daniel(first time out) and Brian in my TJ

We went in off of the US60 because the F350 wouldn't fit in Box Canyon. After we goofed around on the play hills we headed out to the ovens. The cabin is worse than ever. Some one had shot it all up and I won't be surprised when it is burned to the ground for fun....

After the Ovens we headed out to the river. There was just enough water to make it fun. Sorry about that Anthony... ;)

I am happy to say there was very little carnage (Gary's left hub is shot) and everyone had a great time. Thanks again to all who showed up for making this a great run.

Cut the front perches off the axel and spin the axel so you have about 4 deg caster. Then weld the perches back on.
