The problem with the H-2 is it has nothing the same as a hummer
except the shape. Its on a suburban chassis with a hummer looking body
on it.I saw one on the transport truck on the top level,it has skid
plates and skid bars all over the underneath, but its still a suburban
chassis with a little work done to it.With its size and price range
its not even in the same class as a jeep so why try to compare them?I
will take my jeep over anything else any day,a modded jeep will go
alot more places than just about any stock vehicle out there. Will a
modded anything else go the same places our jeeps will go?I bet there
are some that will. Don

Subject: RE: Archeologists On Lower Woodpecker
We all should try to do some more trail maintenance such as this:
http://www.stu-offroad.com/others/other40-1.htm
The Oil Eater we used is completely biodegradable and environmentally
safe. The results were astounding. We cleaned up some of Lower
Terminator and a large part of Upper Terminator on that trip. Some of
the oil and ATF spots were very fresh. All of them cleaned up so well
that if you came up the trail after we cleaned it you wouldn't be able
to pick out where the spots were.
The Oil Eater was bought at a local Costco. It comes in a big gallon jug
bundled with a spray bottle. My experiences with using it in my driveway
were that it left the spot cleaned looking cleaner than the rest of my
driveway. The same held true for when Stu, Joey, Les, and I used it on
the trail. I recommend hitting the spot full strength then diluting with
water while scrubbing it lightly with a brush. Then a quick rinse from a
second squirt bottle and your done.
If you are this upset about the conditions on Woodpecker then plan a
trip out there to clean it up. I'm sure you could talk Stu, Les, Joey,
and myself to help you out. I bet we could get dozens of members to help
clean up!!

Subject: [az_vjc] Archeologists On Lower Woodpecker
Halfway through Lower Woodpecker (at the first major crack) today
there are about a dozen people with clipboards climbing around the
canyon walls, doing mappings of the paintings on the rocks. Needless
to say I got a bit of lip from them about us "driving on the
paintings" and them wanting to get them mapped before the area is
closed because of four wheelers.
The fact that there was quite a bit of oil on the rocks (for quite a
few yards) from someone that "lost their oil pan" (according to one
of them) and didn't clean up their mess really didn't help either. I
personally picked up some trash off the trail though (although I tend
to do that anyways).
I tried to explain that a majority of us are responsible wheelers, do
not destroy vegetation, and are not out to ruin the land. Somehow I
got the impression that they think our jeep bodies are stronger than
the rocks we rub against, and are destroying them.
I'm not saying either party was right, we both have the legal right
to be where we were, it's just that they hiked up to where they
where, and witnessed what could be perceived as us "damaging" the
land, in their eyes.
Now I didn't start an argument, but the truth is they were actually
climbing and walking around on the rocks and walls, actually where
there was existing vegetation....
However, I am thankful that they weren't out there on the Friday
night of the Jamboree to witness all the drunken idiots throwing
their beer cans all around.
I've only been wheeling those trails regularly for a year or so now,
and have never seen them out there before.

I think they meant #1 and #2 Production 4x4 for yuppies. It's kind of
funny since the H2 is nothing more than a GM 3/4 ton pickup with a
different body on it. Where does Car and Driver rank the GM K2500 series
trucks in the all time best category? Think of all the farmers,
ranchers, and construction workers out there using the heck out of their
3/4 ton trucks day in and day out. I got respect for those guys, but the
average H2 owner...I'm willing to bet their scared even of the slightest
amount of desert pinstriping. Of course those things can ramp a shopping
mall curb like nothing else out there.

Hello,
Joe W stopped by today and we had a good time chatting Jeeps. After he left I got to thinking about how he made his new 'Willy's Edition' stickers to kind of poke fun at the Rubicon Edition. I really like how it all turned out. Looks sharp.
Anyway, I'm not sure whether or not you've heard me say this, but I usually call the Jeep Liberty a 'Puberty'. Wouldn't it be funny to make up some stickers for a Liberty that say 'Pubicon Edition'.

Sophistication? Do you know what a 3/4 ton Avalanche is with a different

I don't know what experience anyone has driving Hummers but I drove one in
the Army for 9 years and let me tell you from first hand experience. I have
never been stuck or seen one stuck on any trail (or none trail). I was a
driving instructor for my unit and took these and other vehicles to the
extreme and never had any problems. If I was rich (and lived in Scottsdale)
I wouldn't mind owning one, along with my Jeep of course.

I don't particularly like hummers but I have a video of 2 hummers doing the
Rubicon trail taking no bypasses, including the Little Sluice Before the big
rocks were blasted in there. The hummers were stock except for rocker panel
protection. They spent a good part of the trail with only 3 wheels on the
ground. I ran the Rubicon this summer and the trail can be a solid 5 or a
3.5 depending on which lines you take and what bypasses you use. But what
ever you think about it, you won't really know unless you have been there.
The Rubicon is a continuous test of machine, driving skill and mental
toughness. It just does not quit throwing obstacles at you. Many trails out
here are tougher but none are as long and strenuous. IMO

Just a quick note to remind people that on January 11th I'll be hosting

The workshop is posted on http://www.azvjc.org under the trips section. The
workshop date is currently January 11th, but could vary by a week +-

Hello,
Joe W stopped by today and we had a good time chatting Jeeps.

Howdy! Nothing like being falsely accused to ruin an otherwise
lovely day, huh? Probably once, that archeologist saw one Jeeper do
something dumb, if they ever saw anything at all. Just like
everything else, sometimes it is just one idiot in a group who ruins
it for everyone.
What aggravates me is what you saw: they were tramping all over the
rocks and vegetation, but looking down their noses at you. I am
willing to bet that those were student archeologists, full of self-
righteousness. It sounds like they were the uninformed hypocrits.
Next time ask them if they know what microbiotic crust is, or the
TREAD Lightly rules...
I guess this fires me up because I had my own unpleasant encounter
this weekend, the first of its kind that I have ever had. I was
doing a Broken Arrow tour. I had just gotten to the trailhead, when
a group of mountain bikers came flying by us. One of the women
shouted right into the Jeep as she flew by: "polluters!" I was
stunned, and uncharacteristically speechless.
First, I have never had any unpleasant brushes with the public while
in a yellow Jeep (Pink Jeeps, yes, but not regular people). Second,
my retrofitted 2002 Sahara produces less emissions that her digestive
system. Third, I doubt that she arrived in Sedona in a solar powered
car, or that her high-tech bike and clothing was produced in an
emission-free factory. In fact, she probably drove a volkswagon that
smokes.
In reflection, she probably just had an unpleasant interlude with a
Pink Jeep on the trail, and I was there to receive HER frustration.
My point is, people seem very quick to judge and jump to
conclusions. Everyone is very touchy about public land these days,
and rightfully so...archeologists, bikers, and Jeepers, alike, are
all worried about losing access to their beloved trails and lands.
The challenge I want to put to the group is: How can we bring mutual
understanding to all of these different groups that we all want the
same thing: to protect and enjoy our public lands. We all are so
busy fighting each other that we lose sight of the fact that it is
the policies of the Forest Service and BLM that we should be worried
about. I can't count how many Jeep trails have been shut down by the
Sedona Ranger District in the last two years. Meanwhile, they are
building another golf course...
I know that this is a little heavy for Monday morning, but...
Happy trails!

through in 2WD. I drove one for 6 years in the Army, if someone GAVE me
one, I'd sell it and buy parts for my Jeep with the money.
The only way to drive hummers off-road is with your GO-foot on the
floor. I'll grant you this, they will take a beating. So I guess you
could "drive" one through places like the Terminators -- that is if your
idea of wheeling is hammer down and let the momentum carry you through
instead of a more graceful style of wheeling.
While they have a specific purpose in the Military, with the way they're
built they have no function for the civilian world; unless you're a
Hollywood movie-star that wants to "look cool." And while you couldn't
drop my Jeep out of the back of a C-130 and expect it to survive,
(something which the hummer has no problem handling...) I have no need
for this capability... neither do 99.9% of the civilian hummer owners
either.
BTW, the hummers are far from indestructible... Just go fast enough over
a hump to get the front wheels off the ground when the transfercase
isn't locked. Amazing how fast you can break those half-shafts...

The problem is that we can't agree, so ultimately we will all lose :-( The
mindset of some of these people is to protect the resource for future
generations, and if that means restricting access for the present
inhabitants, so be it. Everyone is fighting for their personal interest,
not the common good. A mutual understanding is inherantly not possible.
None of us will likely ever understand the joys of Tofu and soy milk, so we
really can't expect them to understand our lifestyle either. There are a
small minority of people who are open minded enough to see both sides of an
issue, a small minority.
Maybe I'm just a pessimist, and everything will work out fine. There will
be combination jeep/bike runs with steak and tofu BBQ's after!

I use to use kill switches a long time ago. Now I use a parameter sensor
that sets off my alarm and cuts out the ignition. I have it set up so that
it not only interrupts the power to the starter solenoid but it also cuts
out the power to the coil. I did this incase the would be thief tries to
short across the started solenoid. If you have a kill switch and no alarm
the would be thief has time to search for a way to start you jeep. They most
likely will not stick around if your alarm is blazing away and there is no
quick way of starting your jeep.

Way to go Scott! I laughed my *** off on that one, the Pubicon edition.....LOL Now having said that, I do not have any experience with the KJ, nor have I ever driven one or seen on in action off-road but I can tell you that I have sat in the drivers seat of more than one at car shows (most recently at the Az state fair) and they have the most uncomfortable front seats, man they are just HARD! On the other hand I have read many great reviews of its off-road capabilities as a stock "SUV" (just dont get the new ones as they were lowered an inch) and I have talked to Rusty of Rustys Off Road and seen his and it seems as if it might be as capable (with Rustys mods) as the new H2 Hummer ( I just had to get that on in there ).

I bet we could get dozens of members to help
clean up!!

of them) and didn't clean up their mess really didn't help either. I
personally picked up some trash off the trail though (although I tend
to do that anyways).

IMO

Just a quick note to remind people that on January 11th I'll be hosting
another kill switch clinic at my home. I'd like to remind everyone that
installing a kill switch is really very simple, and it significantly
decreases the odds that your jeep will be stolen; and if you don't think
your Jeep will be stolen, think back on all the posts from club members who
had their rigs stolen.
The install is easy and absolutely ANYONE can do it. Don't think you are
not technical enough or that it will be hard... you are and it isn't.
The workshop is posted on http://www.azvjc.org under the trips section. The
workshop date is currently January 11th, but could vary by a week +-

Funny, it only took me 100 ft off-road to get one buried up to its door
handles in thick Panamanian Mud... same mud-hole that my Jeep WALKED
through in 2WD.

I don't know what experience anyone has driving Hummers but I drove one
in
the Army for 9 years and let me tell you from first hand experience. I
have
never been stuck or seen one stuck on any trail (or none trail). I was a
driving instructor for my unit and took these and other vehicles to the
extreme and never had any problems. If I was rich (and lived in
Scottsdale)
I wouldn't mind owning one, along with my Jeep of course.

My uncle just bought one and he paid 68,000.00 for it. Personally I
think of them like I think of the Liberties, pretty cool if you got
the money to waste but impracticle for four wheeling.

Hey everyone, I went to the last clinic and I'll tell you it was easy, Joe
and the other guys there are a HUGE help and I'm SOOO happy with my switch.
It's easy to activate and well hidden (I did the non-hood lock one).
Thanks again Joe and I'm going to sign up as a "tentative" and try to drop
by to help out now that I kind of know what I'm doing ;-).

Dont waste your money ! I had these on two of my Wranglers and HATED them. I thought they were extermely noisey at highway speeds and they rattled and banged against the roof when the wind caught them........and they no more protect your Jeep from would be thieves........wait and spend your money on a set of hard doors, I have seen them posted in the VJC classifieds in the past for not much more than what you will pay for the 1/2 hard uppers from BT. Then buy your hard top which I have also seen posted for reasonable prices.
My two cents.

Hi All:
I think my post might have been skipped over. I'm fed up with the soft window zip-style upper doors for my TJ and am considering the Best Top Upper Doors that have the sliding windows. Would you recommend them or should I just wait and save up for full doors when I go to a hard top?
Feel free to e-mail me off the list at: jakewagner@yahoo.com
Thank!
