1 more thing. I had commented before that when in 1-2 range it wouldn't
shift into 2nd. I was wrong. A gentleman on JU said that it won't shift
to 2nd in the 1-2 range until around 4500 rpm. Since I never get that
many RPM's while in first gear on the trail I thought it wasn't working.
Yesterday I wound it out to 4500 and it did shift to second.

Now with the range selector in 3rd or OD it will shift into 2nd at a
much lower RPM depending on throttle input, speed, etc.

Some people wire in switches to turn off 2nd gear in the 1-2 range. With
the shift point being 4500 RPM I don't even feel this will be necessary.
I wheeled all day before purposely pushing it to 4500 to test the shift.
In 99.9% of all wheeling it's effectively 1st gear only and you'd have
to purposely push it hard to get it to upshift. Once in 2nd it doesn't
take much backing off the throttle to get it to drop back into first.

No kidding! After 2 Jeeps and 9 years of wheeling them both with manuals
I will never look back. I have never enjoyed wheeling as much as I did
yesterday with the auto. There were lots of steep up and down climbs and
the auto provided much better traction and driver control of the Jeep
than possible with the manual. On the steep downgrades I did have to
stand on the brakes but with 4 wheel discs it wasn't a problem
controlling it. The auto keeps the drivetrain wound up while the brakes
are applied and allows you to modulate the pedal pressure without fear
of locking them up. It's definitely a different wheeling experience but
one that I would never trade back.

The AW4 has a very deep overdrive compared to the Ax15 it replaced. When
I do my front axle swap I think I'll swap over from 4.56 to 5.13 gears
to bring the RPM's up for freeway and highway use.

Hi Joe,

I thought I would let the group know that all went well. We hit a trial
that I had started a year or two ago but was forced to turn back on then
(tires too small that day). It had been a long time since 4x4s were on
the trail and this required us to stop on two different occasions and
build up the washed out areas so we could continue. We ended up back
tracking two times but eventually made it.

Scott???? He said he loved the tranny. Once, he even told me I could
drive it....but I never go to. (I think he was having too much fun!)

Hi Gang,

I was supposed to meet Scott at his house to pickup a transmission jack
this afternoon, but so far I have been unable to contact him. He was
taking his rig out on a shakedown run for his new automatic transmission
this morning... anyone know how the run went?

Kind Regards,

Joe West

That is a bit different than the 4L60E I have.

If I put it in 1st it stays in first until I hit the rev-limiter at 4750rpm
then it'll shift into 2nd (as a "keep this dummy from blowing the engine"
fail-safe)
If I put it in 2nd it stays in 2nd Period.
If I put it in Drive, it will shift from 1st to 2nd to 3rd on it's own.
In OD it is the same as Drive except it will shift from 3rd to 4th (OD).

I've been playing with the idea of putting in a 1-2-3 shift kit, in which
"drive" will then become 3rd gear only, essentially like a manual valve-body
for 1-2-3 yet still an automatic for "OD"

Subject: [TR] Trip Report - Charouleau Gap - Saturday, November 2, 2002

Hello All,

Lonnie Paugh lead a trail run Saturday, November 2, 2002 across Charouleau Gap

The trip started off on time, we left the Texaco and everyone drove to the begining of the trail and aired down and chatted.

We tried several of the play spots along the way up the front side of the mountain. We were all impressed with Rich LaNasa's TJ with the Dana 60's and all the necessary toys. But all were most impressed with Mike Edwards 55 Willy's :o)(ha ha), something about a vin number. Nice rig Mike!

John let Vennessa drive most of the trip, which was her idea anyway, great job young lady you are more than welcome on any of the runs you want to go on in the future just let us know.

The whole trip went really well no break downs or damage to any of the vehicles even after playing on the step about half way thru. Nathan even made it up with just a factory limited slip good job Nathan.

I thought there would be water with the recent rains but there was no water on the trail this trip.

About 4 miles from the end of the run came across a wagoneer with a broken drive shaft that was blocking the trail, and no driver to be found. Had to do some creative work with a hi-lift to move the back end over so we could finish the run.

It was a nice cool day with some cloud cover and a perfect day for wheeling. We will have to do the trip again maybe from the Oracle side the next time.

This is a partial clutch kit for a 87-92 wrangler with a 4cyl manual tranny. The only part missing is the clutch slave. It was the only part I needed and being sunday and napa not being open.It was the only way I could purchase it on such a short notice. Other wise I would have to wait 2 days to get the part from Jeeps Essentials.
The kit includes:
clutch assembly
Clutch plate
Pilot bushing
Clutch alianment tool.

Subject: Archeologists On Lower Woodpecker

Halfway through Lower Woodpecker (at the first major crack) today
there are about a dozen people with clipboards climbing around the
canyon walls, doing mappings of the paintings on the rocks. Needless
to say I got a bit of lip from them about us "driving on the
paintings" and them wanting to get them mapped before the area is
closed because of four wheelers.

The fact that there was quite a bit of oil on the rocks (for quite a
few yards) from someone that "lost their oil pan" (according to one
of them) and didn't clean up their mess really didn't help either. I
personally picked up some trash off the trail though (although I tend
to do that anyways).

I tried to explain that a majority of us are responsible wheelers, do
not destroy vegetation, and are not out to ruin the land. Somehow I
got the impression that they think our jeep bodies are stronger than
the rocks we rub against, and are destroying them.

I'm not saying either party was right, we both have the legal right
to be where we were, it's just that they hiked up to where they
where, and witnessed what could be perceived as us "damaging" the
land, in their eyes.

Now I didn't start an argument, but the truth is they were actually
climbing and walking around on the rocks and walls, actually where
there was existing vegetation....

However, I am thankful that they weren't out there on the Friday
night of the Jamboree to witness all the drunken idiots throwing
their beer cans all around.

I've only been wheeling those trails regularly for a year or so now,
and have never seen them out there before.

Nah, pride aint hurt, this stuff happens...
I was doing fine until about half way up the trail my passenger side
ball joint decided to give up the ghost, taking the axle, joint and
stub with it. We put it back together hoping it would hold together
and put my spare in. Worked great for a while, but once again it came
out, taking the axle with it. We tried putting it together(AGAIN!!)
and were going to three wheel it out of there, but it came right out
again. And while trying to pull it out of the way, the wheel walked
way forward, breaking the steering stabilizer and brakeline. So I
rode out with Dion, Bill Mish called up a few people and Bruce
Browell came through BIG. Ive never even met this guy before, and he
went out and bought me new ball joints, lent me his spare axles(3 of
them) even thought to rent a ball joint press and bring some spare
batteries for flashlights and delivered it all to the air down spot!!
I definitely owe this guy big. Anyway, we got the repairs done by
10:30, took me 1/2 hour to finish the trail and didint get home until
about 12:30;P Im now a member of the AZX4W and It was one HELL of a
jump in run;P

Subject: 8.8 problem

I recently purchased a Ford 8.8 axle to swap in to my YJ. When pulling out the axles to check the seals and bearings I noticed the brake caliper mounting bracket and braket welded to the axle tube are bent on the passenger side. Is it safe to heat this with a torch and bend back? I think this will weaken the bracket, correct? I need to get it straight in order for the disk to work properly and I need to purchase a new caliper bracket.

On a side note, I purchased this from another AZVJC member and called him to let him know of the problem. His response was, "you agreed to purchased it as is... I can't do anything to help you out". Before I bought the axle, I inspected it (I didn't notice the bent parts) and he said there was nothing wrong with it. You would think a fellow Jeeper would try to help you out.

Once this is all fixed a Detroit and regear will follow.

Thanks,

Reid

I don't particularly like hummers but I have a video of 2 hummers doing the
Rubicon trail taking no bypasses, including the Little Sluice Before the big
rocks were blasted in there. The hummers were stock except for rocker panel
protection. They spent a good part of the trail with only 3 wheels on the
ground. I ran the Rubicon this summer and the trail can be a solid 5 or a
3.5 depending on which lines you take and what bypasses you use. But what
ever you think about it, you won't really know unless you have been there.
The Rubicon is a continuous test of machine, driving skill and mental
toughness. It just does not quit throwing obstacles at you. Many trails out
here are tougher but none are as long and strenuous. IMO

Are they also trying to claim that an H2 can run the Rubicon bone

Rubicon and not actually WHEELING it! ;) -Rob

Yesterday and today on Car & Driver, that is aired on TNN, they had a test
drive of the new H2. The report went on about how great these things were
and how they were "the 2nd best production 4x4 by any company, the first
best being the full size Hummer." WTF???? They should pictures of the thing
going over two foot bumps and a wheel lifting off the ground. All this for
$50,000, wow.... Are they even paying attention to what they are doing?

I watched the repeat, from yesterday, of the show to make sure I heard
everything correct and sure enough, I did. I wonder if these people have
driven a Rubicon or tried to get the lanky thing through a canyon? I used to
give Car & Driver some credibility, that's gone.

Just wondering if anyone else saw it. I might drop them a note.

Gee, you mean everybody doesn't love jeeps?! Those arogant *******s! Let's
all write them letters to whine and ***** that they didn't pick our
brand...Opinions are like assholes.

I agree that the H1 and H2 are not the #1 and #2 4x4's ever made. When I
think of the best production 4x4's ever made, things like Unimogs, Mercedes
G-wagon, Landcruiser, and Jeeps come to mind. Maybe they were refering to
the sophistication of the driveline, or the purpose build development (H1).

Lonnie,
Thanks for the great time, Tucson people are allright. LOL
My daughter and I had a wonderful run with you guys. Charouleau Gap is one of the prettiest Arizona runs that I have been on. Thanks to all for the pictures, a digital camera is going on my list of necessary trail equipment. I am planning to take my wife down there and let her see it for herself. Any Phoenix people that might be wanting to try an out of town run, this is the one, pretty country, enough rocks to keep it interesting, and good people to run with.
