Subject: [TR] Woodpecker (Lower) - Sunday, November 3, 2002

Hello All,

Nick Smith is leading a Woodpecker (Lower) trail run on Sunday, November 3, 2002.

When: 8:15am
Where: Texaco Florence Junction
Rating: 4.5+
Length: 3 hours
CB Channel: 4

Regretably sold my TJ and am going out with the lucky new owner to break it in. Will do a couple runs on lower and upper Woodpecker. Nothing too tough, just getting to know the rig. Come out and welcome Brad to the group.

Lower Woodpecker is really more a "play" area then a "trail". It is very short in length but BIG on rocks. There are five or so different "paths" to take through this outcropping of rocks, some bigger than others, some more off camber than others. Sometimes there's water, sometimes not. It's different each time you traverse it but it definitely doesn't get easier.

There are full rock walls covered with pictographs. How wonderful it would be to know the story behind all of them.

Your camera is a must. Bring sun lotion and lots of water because you may spend some time watching your fellow wheeler struggle or climb or slide on the rocks. You can continue up through Upper Woodpecker if time permits, but that makes for a long day.

Enjoy and remember to TREAD Lightly!

I'd have to defer to Stu to answer this so he can check with Blaine to
make sure it is OK. If so, mine are still on the bench.

No the only reason you get the lift on an MJ is because you are moving the spring pack above the axle. Since the XJ already has an SOA, you have the 5 1/2" of lift already (OMG, can you image an XJ with an SUA !) Anyway in looking at my XJ and MJ side by side, the springs on the MJ might be a bit longer than the XJ and the spring perches on the MJ are closer to the center of the axle by about an inch on each side. I would think your options for that much lift on an XJ would be an after market 4" or better (if there is a better one) spring pack, lift shackles and maybe blocks. Now if you want to go all out, you can shorten and narrow a Chevy Blazer frame, put 22" of lift on it and drop your XJ body on top and this is what you will get..............the ultimate XJ, check out the attached pictures........

Interesting. Did not know that. Does that mean you could just use MJ
(SUA) leafs packs on an XJ (SOA) and get 3-4" of lift? Are the leafs a
different length?

It looks like your bolt pattern is the smaller Wrangler bolt pattern, Would this conversion work if you had the Warn 5x5.5 full floaters in the rear ? If so, you would need different rotors or have the ZJ rotors re-drilled. Just a thought or observation. I have the 5x5.5 conversion on mine and used the Warn disc conversion with Caddy calipers, I can tell you the Warn disc conversion sucked on my Wrangler, Warn says you may have to bend the brackets to make them work properly, yes you certainly do but the Caddy calipers are a bad choice but necessary if you want an Ebrake. I went back to drums (but the bigger 10" ones from a ZJ) due to continuing problems with the calipers.

Hey all,
I ordered some headlight and front turn signal light guards from
quadratech and they showed up with some paint scratched off from the
shipping process. I called them and they said they'd send a new set
right out. When I asked about arrangments to return the damaged set
they told me to keep them!! These things are about$45 and have one
very light scrape in the paint on one side, and they just gave me
free pair!! Great company to deal with. So, now I'll have an extra
set at the end of the week. Any body want them for say $25? There
four pieces, two for the blinkers and two for the headligts. These
are the black steel ones with just two bars going in front of the
lights (Not the crappy plastic ones or the mesh deals). If
yourviterested I can e-mail you pics.
thanks,
Mike Hudson

FYI&.something to consider.

If you carry spare D44 axle shafts (dont we all?) on the trail, you will want two sets of them. Since the retainer plate goes on the axle shaft before the bearing is pressed on, you wont be swapping them out on the trail.

Hey Chris (or Stu, if you have a set lying around still),

Maybe you could take measurements and/or trace 'em on some paper, etc...

Hell, maybe I'll go on and have one of the machine shops here in Tucson (I know some people), fab up a run of 'em. I certainly don't want to pull one of my axles and pull it apart, to get the measurements.

Thanks,

Fred

Yup. I think my next mod after my axle swap (axle is at 4 Wheelers now getting an ARB), I'll be putting the rear disks on my TJ. Luckily, I got some of the last Blaine retainer plates (THANKS STU!!).

Here's a link to photo's from my run on Upper Ajax today. It was mostly a "stack and unstack rocks for the Tacoma" run. Today's casualties were one dent in the tacoma bed, a bent jeep leaf spring, and two torn BFG tires.

Thanks for all the replies on my idle problem. Now I have a few more
questions. I checked to see what code the computer was showing. It
showed 2.4 on the odo. I assume this means code 24, which is the TPS
code. Does this sound right. Also, where can I get a TPS locally.
NAPA says they don't even have it in their books. Checker, Autozone &
Pep Boys can't help me. Is the dealer my only option? Any suggestions
are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

I have a brand new TPS I carry as a trail spare. You can come get it if you
want it... the only requirement is that you replace it next week.

No kidding! After 2 Jeeps and 9 years of wheeling them both with manuals
I will never look back. I have never enjoyed wheeling as much as I did
yesterday with the auto. There were lots of steep up and down climbs and
the auto provided much better traction and driver control of the Jeep
than possible with the manual. On the steep downgrades I did have to
stand on the brakes but with 4 wheel discs it wasn't a problem
controlling it. The auto keeps the drivetrain wound up while the brakes
are applied and allows you to modulate the pedal pressure without fear
of locking them up. It's definitely a different wheeling experience but
one that I would never trade back.

The AW4 has a very deep overdrive compared to the Ax15 it replaced. When
I do my front axle swap I think I'll swap over from 4.56 to 5.13 gears
to bring the RPM's up for freeway and highway use.

Hi Joe,

I thought I would let the group know that all went well. We hit a trial
that I had started a year or two ago but was forced to turn back on then
(tires too small that day). It had been a long time since 4x4s were on
the trail and this required us to stop on two different occasions and
build up the washed out areas so we could continue. We ended up back
tracking two times but eventually made it.

Scott???? He said he loved the tranny. Once, he even told me I could
drive it....but I never go to. (I think he was having too much fun!)

I was supposed to meet Scott at his house to pickup a transmission jack
this afternoon, but so far I have been unable to contact him. He was
taking his rig out on a shakedown run for his new automatic transmission
this morning... anyone know how the run went?

Kind Regards,
