I would say check your vacuum lines, and your O2 Sensors... What code are
you throwing? Hold down the mileage button, turn the jeep on and off 3
times while holding the button, releasing it on the 3rd time you turn the
ignition on, and leave it on... Write down the codes it spits out on your
odometer.

Do me a favor and thank your driver that would have been on the trail around 1:30pm on Thursday. Tell him the guy in the gold XJ owes him a beer (or pop)!

Frank

P.S. I noticed that the pink jeep tours flyer says that they "exclusively" run the broken arrow trail. How can they get away with saying that? You guys are out there too and I think I saw another company as well.

Howdy! Glad to hear that you think the "yellow Jeep drivers are

have a lot of fun on Broken Arrow, too. (And if you think the Pink

Hope to see you up here again soon.

Subject: custom exhaust setup.

The other day I hi centered my jeep, and slightly crushed the
exhaust pipe. (it wasn't that bad until my buddy came and helped me.
he would give me a little push and then let go, causing me to bounce
on the rocks.. argh.)
And the day after I smashed the pipe my jeep started to back fire,
spit, put and just die. So lucky me I broke down in front of a .99
cent store and managed to get a hacksaw and I cut the pipes on both
sides.. The pipe was smashed at the Y connection so I had to cut
both. The jeep runs fine now, just loud.
Now I am thinking of doing a custom exhaust job under the jeep.
Seeing how vulnerable the previous set up was I came up with the idea
of running the pipes on the inside of the frame. (frame is not boxed
in , yet). I understand there my be an issue with the heat
dissipation but think of the protection I will get from having my
pipes level with the frame. What does every one else think about
this idea? I can re-wire the brake lights to run under the body, my
gas tank is under the drivers seat. …

Oh.. the jeep got its first off-road casualty .. a smashed rocker
panel. :D looks cute I think. And was surprised by my bondo job not
falling off. Just cracking.
and i discovered my right tire doesnt like to spin in 4 wheel drive.
might be the locking hub.

Hi Bob,

I'm guessing that it's the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor). They are
notorious for failing... especially if they get wet. You can check by
reading the code returned by the computer.

I was doing about 65mph yesterday when my check engine light came on.
When I came to a stop, the Jeep wouldn't idle. It runs very rough
until it reaches about 1500 rpm, then runs fine anywhere above that.
I thought I smelled fuel, but I didn't see any black smoke. I have

In contrast to the conversion you mentioned, putting the ZJ disc brakes on a TJ is wonderful. The conversion is so easy to do&.with the exception of the necessary modified retainer plate (or a spacer ring) that compensates for the thickness of the caliper bracket, it is virtually plug and play. My 35 tires stop like a stock vehicle, in my opinion. The ZJ e-brake drum also works just fine. I bought a pair of ZJ e-brake cables and hooked them up to the TJ actuator.

While I have not tried it personally, Ive had a good friend try the Stainless disc brake kit on his CJ-7. He was COMPLETELY unhappy with it.

Since the Explorer 8.8 disc brakes and the ZJ disc brakes are so similar (some of the e-brake components are interchangeable, such as the shoes), they should work well. I hope Tera works ALL of the bugs out and does not do there typical, IMHO, almost fully engineered kind of upgrade.

It looks like your bolt pattern is the smaller Wrangler bolt pattern, Would this conversion work if you had the Warn 5x5.5 full floaters in the rear ? If so, you would need different rotors or have the ZJ rotors re-drilled. Just a thought or observation. I have the 5x5.5 conversion on mine and used the Warn disc conversion with Caddy calipers, I can tell you the Warn disc conversion sucked on my Wrangler, Warn says you may have to bend the brackets to make them work properly, yes you certainly do but the Caddy calipers are a bad choice but necessary if you want an Ebrake. I went back to drums (but the bigger 10" ones from a ZJ) due to continuing problems with the calipers.

Hi Joe,

I thought I would let the group know that all went well. We hit a trial
that I had started a year or two ago but was forced to turn back on then
(tires too small that day). It had been a long time since 4x4s were on
the trail and this required us to stop on two different occasions and
build up the washed out areas so we could continue. We ended up back
tracking two times but eventually made it.

Scott???? He said he loved the tranny. Once, he even told me I could
drive it....but I never go to. (I think he was having too much fun!)

Subject: Re: [TR] Trip Report - Broken Arrow - Thursday, October 31, 2002

Howdy! I will find out who that was - thanks, again!

As for Pink Jeep advertising "exclusivity", they had the only Forest
Service permits for Broken Arrow until two years ago, when a federal
judge ruled that permits were not necessary (it's public land - the
USFS cannot discriminate who can use it).

Now, Pink is suing the Forest Service and every tour company in town
who uses Broken Arrow. I guess I would be irritated if I had had a
trail all to myself for 15 years, built my whole business around it,
and paid obscene amounts of money to the USFS to use it. But the
USFS never gave them "exclusive" permits, in fact, their (now
defunct) permit reads "non-exclusive", so the lawsuit is,
understandably, making them even more unpopular than they already are.
Around here, they are viewed as the "evil empire".

I should mention that I have friends who work for them. These are
good people who are just trying to make a living here.
Unfortuneately, their owner is a spoiled rich brat who came into this
town thinking he was going to own it, and is throwing a fit because
he is not getting his way. This attitude has trickled down through
his company.

The owner of our company is a second generation native Sedonan, and
we just shake our heads at the political games going on here. We
concentrate on trying to keep things positive, cooperative and fun.
Some people just take things WAY too seriously! :D

Well, didn't mean to get up on my soapbox, but you asked! I hope
that none of this will affect anyone's ability to enjoy our otherwise
beautiful town.

Happy trails,

Nena

If I were to tackle this I could probably use the spacers that came with my Warn kit ( I havent measured them but I think they are nearly 1/4" wide), I had to use them with my 10" drums from a ZJ.....(Warn suggests for strength that a 5th hole be drilled in both the brake backing plate and the axle flange, which I did, in the same place as you put the screw)........my problem is that I have the Warn 5X5.5 full floater conversion so I am at a loss as to what what kind of rotors would work, I certainly dont think CJ rotors would work as they did with the Warn conversion (I believe they might be taller than ZJ rotors and then there is the question of those cool brake shoes for the ebrake, the Caddy calipers used in the Warn conversion have an arm connected to a worm gear that actuates the piston in the caliper for the ebrake, that is the problem with those calipers, they were a problem when Caddy came out with them). Oh well, if anyone has any ideas on what rotor to use with a 5x5.5 axle, let me know.

Interesting. Did not know that. Does that mean you could just use MJ

Maybe you could take measurements and/or trace 'em on some paper, etc...
Hell, maybe I'll go on and have one of the machine shops here in Tucson (I know some people), fab up a run of 'em. I certainly don't want to pull one of my axles and pull it apart, to get the measurements.

The biggest thing that's different between the ZJ and Exploder ;) rear disk is that the bolt pattern is different on the axle end. What Currie and others do, that use the Explorer rear disk on their D44's, is cut the end of the D44 axle tubes off and weld on 9" ends. This also allows you to run the larger and stronger 9" bearings. A lot of places (Tera for one), sell the 9" ends.
If Tera is going to use the Explorer rear disk for their conversion, it'll be interesting to see how they do it. Maybe they've welded and re-drilled the caliber mounting brackets to match the holes in the D44 axles.

Y'all seem to have forgotten, that with many of the viruses, they e-mail
themselves, using the address book, without the person (who owns the
computer) knowledge. Often times they'll even use one of the address gleaned
from the address book as the return address, so it may not even be from the
person who's name is on the "From:" line.

Cheers,
Fred
