That's really cool, but what the heck are you putting the straps on in the pic's ????????
Unique to say the least.

Looks good, a slight high in the front. I assume you remove the tongue weight jack wheel before rollin' down the road? :)

It looks like they may be putting the straps in the frame holes that are on there. When I trailer mine I have some straps that fit those holes. I also cross them but I have them on the other sides of the tires... but the trailer I use is 8.5' wide and allows me to do this....

Yeah, the more I looked at it I can see that being the case.

This is our first car hauler - I think we need some tie-down lessons! :aagh:

Yup, we turned the jack wheel up before we took off for our test drive. It's not our totally first trailer, just our first car hauler!

Aha, yes, they're in the holes in the frame, but I don't see how to put them behind the wheels and still cross them? Yikes, we need some help mees thinks! Glad we posted this! :skull:

Scary looking strap job. I, personally, strap the axles. Big chain rear axle with binder, double 2" 10K # strap the front axle. The reason for the rear chain vs. straps, is you will get much more force when braking hard than accelerating hard. With strapping just the body(I know, there will be opinions for body strapping), you have to completely compress the springs to keep the straps tight all the time, like when you hit a big bump/dip. The body will settle and could cause the straps to come undone. Also, with strapping axles, it allows the suspension of the rig to help absorb some of the harshness of the road, not totally relying on the trailer to do this. I have been told both ways are the proper ways, but it is my personal preference to strap the axles, makes more sense to me. Congrats on the new Jeep mule.

Duuude! Glad you stopped by. Great to see you & Ann. Glad you had a safe trip home to Sahuarita. We'll bring you your jacket next time we're in the neighborhood. ;)

How do you strap to the axles? We wanted to do this but with all the brake lines, breather hoses, shock mounts & control arm mounts, there was absolutely no room for straps?
Frame holes looked like the only other obvious choice.
Any advice is mucho appreciated!!!! :aagh:

Axle strapping seems to be the prefereed method and the one I use as well. I don't go so far as using a chain, but I know a few guys that do. Get a set of quality tie downs like these:
http://www.macscustomtiedowns.com/product/76/1
(there are cheaper equivalent ones).
Try to get a set with the safety catch on the end as well, no hooks.
Play around some and find out what works best for you and your comfort level. Remember to check them for tightness after a few miles, especially with new straps.
Good luck, there is a lot of info out there and I think everyone does it a little differently, ask around the shops as well, and check out other peoples setups before or after a run.
Edit:
Duuude!

Fronts are fairly easy,

The rear is tougher. You should be able to get a strap on the passenger side, the brake line has a cover over it, that is where the strap goes. Drivers side rear is one reason many use a chain and binder.
I just put the 4th strap around my bumper, probably not the best, but I'm comfortable with it.

I'm no expert, but from the research I did and from talking to the guys at 4wheelers I went with the chain in back and straps up front.
The front straps loop around the axle tube right by the shock mount, or I've been told that you can put the straps through the "C"'s to secure it.
On the rear I bought a 20' 5/16" chain with hooks from Lowes. The chain goes over the pumpkin and come out under the axle tubes, there by missing the brake lines. To avoid beating up the diff to much, I slid an old bike inner tube over the chain.
To load the jeep, I drive it up on the trailer to my marked spot then set the brake. I put the chain on the rear as snug as I can get it, then I do the front straps (once the straps are on but not tight, release the brake). By tightening down the front straps last, it puts tension on the rear chain and keeps everything tight.
Once chains and straps are secure, I put the jeep in 1st gear and set the parking brake.
I'll look for a picture, but I'm not sure I have one.

Congrats on the trailer. You will now find yourself in rockier situations and not as afraid of breakage or dents. Soon those 33s will be too small for you. Then its a never ending cycle :)

Just set the e-brake, you'll be fine.
J/K, X's 15 on the axle straps.

Sweet guys. I'm jealous. I really want to get my rig on a trailer.
So do you have plans to upgrade the rig, or are you just sick of driving in it out to far away places?

No upgrades planned at this time, just tired of driving 1,000's of miles in it to get to places like the 'Con & Moab.

Like Bryan(Scully), for the rear, I start by going under the axle tube, up over pumpkin pinion, and back down under other tube with the chain. The front, I wrap the axle tube right by the pumpkin in the center. 1 strap over and back under, the other, under and back over. Make sure you have some lateral help(like forming a V).

Okay, I recently got a trailer and have am interested to know more about this. For you guys that use a chain to secure the rear, how do you tighten it? Do you just use a hook and put it through the last link that you can? Also, does everyone use straps that are purpose-made axle straps for the front? Is there a problem with using the strong kind variety of standard ratcheting tie downs?

See other site, but I use a load binder. Or you can chain around point and hook onto itself, then tighten the front to put pressure on the chain.

Thanks Lance. I'm gonna find a chain for the rear, and got some straps coming for the front.
