Subject: Automatics and Manuals was : Re: 37's and gears

Hi Scotty,
I ordered my NV4500 yesterday... my ax15 is getting worse by the day and I'm afraid that my rig is far too modified to try and get a replacement ax15 from Chrysler (not to mention that having the transmission fail is an excellent reason to upgrade ). As far as an auto being easier to drive offroad, I agree it is... but I really don't want things to be any easier than they already are.

I can't wait to testdrive your Jeep with the automatic in it... it sounds like you are really enjoying the change!

Scott Kruize wrote:

Joe,I too spent lots of time and money trying to "fix" the problems I had with the manual. I threw a hand throttle at it, not happy. Threw 4.56's at it, not happy. Threw a 4:1 in, not happy. I was about to tear the motor apart to fix the manual transmission flaws such as low RPM stall speed, and poor acceleration. The end result is that I finally got wise and tossed the manual aside. I no longer need the 4:1 or the hand throttle to rock crawl. I no longer feel I need the stroker. The auto made a HUGE difference in my felt acceleration. I can't believe the difference. I'm so happy that I have abandoned my stroker project. With the manual you also lose alot of momentum when you drop the clutch to shift. The auto grabs the next gear and keeps accelerating. Wanna go faster while climbing? Floor it and the auto grabs a lower gear and keeps on chugging. Then manual loses momentum and then when you finally release the clutch your SOL.You pride yourself on being a smart man. I'm sure you would never make the same mistakes that I would. ;) Scott K

4.56:1 with AtlasII 4.3:1 transfer case and 5 speed manual. I like this setup, but if you don't have a 4:1 transfer case, you may want to go with 4.88:1 gears. I don't however, have an automatic so I can't speak for it's performance. I can tell you my rig is a slow DOG on the road (can't wait to put that V-10 in )

Mike Hudson,

I owe you an apology, apparently. I did not mean to imply that
you were a bad person, only that there is another consideration here
that seems to have been overlooked. While I find myself to be both
well-adjusted and content, I realize that this is a luxury that some
do not enjoy. Someone like the shooter, for instance. I do not
know, nor pretend to know, the kind of hopelessness or despair that
this individual must have felt. I thank God for that. I also feel
deeply saddened by his acts, as some of my professors from past
colleges came to mind in light of this unfortunate incident. They
were some of my best friends, and also some of the factors in my life
that have made me who I am.
That being said, I feel pain for the losses that both faculty,
friends, and family lost that day. I also feel pain for the
shooter's family. You see, it is entirely possible that he was
someone who was very deeply loved and cherished by someone else. And
now he is gone. He performed an extremely violent, intentional, and
terrible thing, and in so inflicting his pain upon others, spread it
even further to include his family. I do not think that a happy
person who enjoys the stability and peace that you and I know and
live with would willingly or knowingly inflict that kind of hurt to
anyone, especially their family. Therefore, I feel pity for the
shooter, and it is not unjustified. It is human compassion. Do I
forgive him? NO. Do I understand him? Absolutely not. I do,
however, hate the taking of life, and pray for all who were involved,
both living and deceased.

Mourning the unnecessary taking of life,

Thanks to Scott K and others with the info on the speedo gear and Xfer case drop..........BUT I still have yet to have anyone give me a really good suggestion on my ebrake cable problem..........The drivers side Ebrake cable on my YJ is way too short after my SOA, so short in fact the cable will pull out and get so tight on that wheel drops that it actually brakes the wheel. I looked at using a long side cable but there is just too much there. I looked at some XJ and ZJ cables to replace it with as they are longer but dont think they will work either without fabrication of brackets, etc. Is there any easier way or another cable swap that I am not thinking of. Someone suggested that I move the original cable lower on the bracket by drilling a new hole but that just isnt going to give anywhere near enough cable. The stock cable when sitting level is already going straight to the connector and it is just about stretched tight when level. Anyone out there with an SOA YJ or experience with one that can offer suggestions ? Jim Flores are you out there, I cant find your name on the member directory.

Thanks for your input.

Not sure if your brake cable is the same as a CJ but if it is here is what I did. Your cable from the brake peddle or lever goes to a floating bracket that the two brake cables are connected to. The two brake cables go through a bracket that is attached to the frame and then down to the brake drums. So this is what you do.

Cut bracket with the two cables that go down to the brake drums off the frame and move it down the frame so that your brake cables to brake drums have adequate slack and weld it back on. Now go by coupling nut( this is a nut that is long) and some threaded rode and extend the rod on the end of the brake peddle or lever cable so that it will attach to the floating bracket where the two brake cables are connect.

Hi Scotty,
I ordered my NV4500 yesterday... my ax15 is getting worse by the day and I'm afraid that my rig is far too modified to try and get a replacement ax15 from Chrysler (not to mention that having the transmission fail is an excellent reason to upgrade ). As far as an auto being easier to drive offroad, I agree it is... but I really don't want things to be any easier than they already are.

I can't wait to testdrive your Jeep with the automatic in it... it sounds like you are really enjoying the change!

Hi all,I'm sure that most of you know how your jeep grows smaller after a while, well, I run 33's and 3.73's and am planning the second build up of my jeep. This includes an RE 5.5 longarm and 37" tires (I think I'll just skip the 35" stage). My question is; What gears do you guys run with 37's? I have an auto and a 6 cyl. Any insight is appreciated. How big are your springs????? I had 2" springs SOA before, and with
the new hole drilled it was ok. Now I run stock springs and have an
8.8 which has plenty long cables.

Good luck.
