Joe,
I too spent lots of time and money trying to "fix" the problems I had with the manual. I threw a hand throttle at it, not happy. Threw 4.56's at it, not happy. Threw a 4:1 in, not happy. I was about to tear the motor apart to fix the manual transmission flaws such as low RPM stall speed, and poor acceleration. The end result is that I finally got wise and tossed the manual aside. I no longer need the 4:1 or the hand throttle to rock crawl. I no longer feel I need the stroker. The auto made a HUGE difference in my felt acceleration. I can't believe the difference. I'm so happy that I have abandoned my stroker project. With the manual you also lose alot of momentum when you drop the clutch to shift. The auto grabs the next gear and keeps accelerating. Wanna go faster while climbing? Floor it and the auto grabs a lower gear and keeps on chugging. Then manual loses momentum and then when you finally release the clutch your SOL.
You pride yourself on being a smart man. I'm sure you would never make the same mistakes that I would. ;)

4.56:1 with AtlasII 4.3:1 transfer case and 5 speed manual. I like this setup, but if you don't have a 4:1 transfer case, you may want to go with 4.88:1 gears. I don't however, have an automatic so I can't speak for it's performance. I can tell you my rig is a slow DOG on the road (can't wait to put that V-10 in )

Ooh, thats a pretty gutless combination. I ran that setup for about 1 week before regearing to 4.56. I was then happy for 2 years until I got the urge to go bigger. I can't imagine that 5th gear is very useful to you.
It's going to be a rather low number. Somewhere around 31 or 32 just to guess.

Anyone have an inexpensive 3.92 and up carrier laying around for a D44?

There are a lot of tech articles on the web about installing R&Ps and it really isnt that hard to do. To be honest, I think it sounds harder than it is. I am just a self taught home mechanic and I did mine and they work great. There is even one article that says if you use the same bearings and shims on the new set up that you dont have to do all hard work that some other sites and books talk about. I cant vouch for that but to set them up the "book" way is a real pain in the butt.

Ok, Here is the Cheepest lift you can put on a cherokee..
This is probablly the most Ghetto way to go but when your short on cash your
short on cash.. You may even have enough cash left over to get some used
32's off someone...
A. 4 1.75 poly spacers up front (about 3 inches of lift)
B. 4 stock spring isolaters (another 1/2 inch lift)
C. 2 inch lift shackle
D. 2 inch lift block
E. 4 longer shocks from Checker auto parts 19.99 each.
Should run you about 150.00 total..
My suggestion, Save the 350 and wait untill you can do the lift correctly
with good long lasting upgradeable parts.
My lift is all pieced together and still doesn't work the way I want it. If
your just looking to run bigger tires and not 4wheel the thing
then go the Ghetto lift...
I hope this helps
Ps. If you need anymore help let me know..

I know there are a lot of reasons people are not more active. Myself, I work around 60 hours a week, live in Tucson, (it appears a huge majority of the club is in Phx), so new to jeeping barely know which end is supposed to be up, and blah blah blah. But I am really pushing to be able to get to the coves cleanup. Sounds like a trip my nearly stock 76 CJ-5 could handle. Would enjoy meeting the faces attached to the names I see here on a daily basis.

Ok here are some tips and the tools you will need.
Tools:
Dial indicator
Mag base
calipers
Torque wrench
Setup tips:
Set the pinion gear to be 2.625 + or - marking on gear from center of
carrier
Backlash should be set to around .008 to .010.
Use gear paint to check pattern. Depth of pattern is more critical then
having the pattern centered heal to toe but heal to toe should be close to
center.
Other option is I can show you how to setup the front for $150 and you can
do the rear your self. Other shops will charger $300 per axel to do the
setup.

a random thought to throw in -
at Power and McDowell SE corner, there is an Albertsons with a big
parking lot, a gas station, and a Jack in the Box for breakfast - and
anybody coming up from anywhere in the E Valley _has_ to come through
that intersection (unless you go in through Usery Pass a mile east).
I live in Las Sendas on the NE corner of Power and McDowell, so I

I think this is a great idea. Sounds like the next "AZVJC BBQ". We just need
someone to arrange it all like Hunter has done at his place. Duffy or someone
close to Duffy should probably work that and be the coordinator. Get people to
bring items such as buns, dogs, meat, chips, drinks, etc. Have a sign up
list. Worked really well in the past. And Duffy has PLENTY of room for it
all.

Joe,
I too spent lots of time and money trying to "fix" the problems I had with the manual.

I live in Las Sendas on the NE corner of Power and McDowell, so I
would have a vested interest in meeting there, but may just cruise on
out and meet the world at the gate.

And Duffy has PLENTY of room for it
all.
Giiiidddddeeeee up!
