Well, here's my bump up the list post for anyone who may have missed it. I have to sell the jeep. :( It's a great jeep!
I'd like to get $6900 but am negotiable. I MUST SELL!!! Will entertain any “reasonable” offer.
It's has the following:
1992 yj 4.o ho 5 spd /ac /cd
Red
-Brand new Supertop/ got it two years ago, rarely used, I'm a big fan of just the bikini top.
-New Bikini top 06/02
-Windjammer/torneau
-Half Hard Doors
-Rearstorage, (aluminum watertight storage rear seat removed but still have, excellent shape.
-Herculined
–front tow hooks
-Custom rear tow hooks
-Tuffy padded lockable consol, bout 8 mos old, black
-alpine disc player, new 07/02
-wet okole covers
-3.5 superlift
-custom1/4" rockers, although they’ve never been bumped!
-bfg at kos
-k&n; if you like, currently not in use, rather new.
-no sway, trac bars but still have if necessary
-grill guard
-120w fog lights and rear fog
-windshield light brackets, no lights
–cb &; ant.
-Hi lift
-brand-new mopar windshield, courtesy of a glass co. mistake.
-I will include just about all of the recover/trail equipment as I won't need it anymore.
This jeep is my daily driver and when it was off road it was primarily to camp and explore old ghost towns, mines and the such. It hasn't been beaten but is a proven, reliable trail jeep.
The body has no dings except for a small one on the hood(not really noticeable) although it does have az pin striping but that does wax out if your up to the task of waxing.
I can't foresee this needing anything at all. Everything is very tight. No leaks of any sort. Oil and proactive main't done routinely and have all receipts and documents for Everything.
This is a vehicle I'd hate to trade in as it won't get the appreciation or respect that jeepers or would be jeepers would give it. Different times dictate the need for a Truck(hauling). I can provide a detailed list of the repairs/replacements/tune ups etc it has had over the life of ownership. I would not sell it if there was any way i could afford keep two vehicles.
Please pass this along to anyone you know that may need a good looking, reliable, sound jeep.
Email me for pics!
Thanks Michael

Yup, you'll *need* (note: not "want") rear disk with the auto. When I did the auto swap the rear drums (running 35 tires) weren't even tolerable. On the trail they were down right dangerous. The rear disk swap has made a *TON* of difference, and this is running 35's. It will be worse with drums, running 37's.
Regarding the ZJ disk swap, as mentioned you need some custom retainer plates. I've been told by the person who made them original, that he's out and has no plans to produce any more. You can check with Tera. They are coming out with a rear disk conversion "for all TJ's". I had talked to them a few months back and they had told me "in a few months"... You could also see if anyone has a set of the retainers around still, and get some made to match them. I'm sure that there is a market for 'em ;)
BTW, the ZJ and Explorer rear disk are really similiar, but, besides the bolt pattern, the calibers are a little different, and the pads themselves are a little different. You can swap cailbers between them, but the pads have to follow the cailbers.
Another option, for a direct bolt in replacement, assuming you have a D44 in the rear, is to get a set of 9" ends, several places sell them, including Tera. Cut the ends off the D44 and weld the 9" ends in place (this is what Currie does with the D44's that they sell with disk brakes). This allows the Explorer rear disk to bolt right up 100%. It also allows the bigger 9" bearings to be used.
BTW, Scott, you asked me to get back with you regarding the combo valve. Just last night, I swapped in the combo valve from a '98 ZJ and also the master cylinder. The difference is amazing. I'll know this afternoon, when I drive home, or maybe even at lunch, if the combo valve solved the pre-load on the rear calibers. Right now I'm 95% sure it did. The other thing is that the M/C from the ZJ furnishes more volumn to the rear brakes, and the difference in the pedal is great !!!
Interestingly enough, a couple of the parts stores (Autozone, Checker), show the same part number for the M/C for the TJ's and ZJ's. Talking to my friend at the Jeep dealership, she assured me that they aren't the same. I checked the numbers on the M/C itself (they are made by Bendix) and sure enough, they are different, so I went on and purchased it.
Rear drums (or actually the wheel cylinders) require less volumn of brake fluid then calibers. The M/C for a disk/drum setup (like TJ's) are made to supply less volumn to the rear wheel cylinders. M/C for a disk/disk setup (ZJ's) supply more volumn to the rear cailbers.
I'm happy now !!!
:)

Joey K is right. You definitely want discs in the back. My rear drums were tolerable with 35's but damn dangerous with 37's and this was with the 5 speed that I could downshift to slow down. Now that I have 37's and an auto I wouldn't even want to attempt to drive it without some rear discs back there. Please, factor this into the cost of your upgrade.
If you have a Dana 44 talk to Stu about his ZJ disc swap. You'll need some custom retainer plates. If you have a 35 don't bother, swap in an 8.8 with discs. It's amazing how fast my Explorer discs will stop my Jeep with 37's. The ZJ and Explorer discs are damn near identical except for the bolt pattern on the end of the axle housing. Explorer discs can also be swapped onto a 44.

Hi all,
I'm sure that most of you know how your jeep grows smaller after a while, well, I run 33's and 3.73's and am planning the second build up of my jeep.
This includes an RE 5.5 longarm and 37" tires (I think I'll just skip the 35" stage).
My question is; What gears do you guys run with 37's? I have an auto and a 6 cyl.
Any insight is appreciated.

Another problem with statistics...
Just like Scott said the other day, he rarely goes on any posted runs anymore. This tends to be the trend. Most people that are running the hard core trails are just grouping up with their friends to run trails, instead of signing up on the website trail runs. So... most of the runs, except for the big event runs (Crown King, Jamboree) are posted by people that are fairly new and are looking for people to join them on these trails. And most of those people aren't into the hardcore... yet. That's why you see more runs for 2.0-3.0 trails.

Many of the 2.0 "runs" you see in the statistics include Technical

future, Table Mesa.

John,
The best thing to do is to check with Tera about the retainer plates.
My friend in CA no longer is making them (as Fred mentioned). To get a
reasonable manufacturing price on them, he had to order a significant
number of units. He ended up having way too much money tied up in the
plates, sitting on his garage shelf, waiting for do-it-yourselfers to
buy a pair. (I certainly don't blame him). I've read that some folks
have accomplished the same with just putting in a spacer.

Robert,
What is the chance that your axle is not properly centered under your vehicle? (that might explain the slight shift to one side)
As for one being longer than the other. When you are sitting on level ground AND you have the front disconnected, measure your rear height (both back corners) and see if you are sitting level. A sagging spring in the rear will cause the opposite side front corner to want to lift and thus make for a longer length on that disconnect side.

As far as the axle not being properly centered, that could be a possibility. Would that have been something that would have been that way from the factory or is that something I did when I "ran into a rock"? This is still all very new to me... I'll measure your rear height tonight and see if one of the springs is sagging a little more than the other... Thanks for the ideas.

Anyone know what speedo gear I would need when I go to my 35's? I have a 34 tooth in there now. If it matters I have 4.0L/5spd TJ.
Any help from those who have similar setup would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Robert,
Did you drill the hole in the axle bracket and move the track bar
over about a 3/4"? If not, than that is prob what is making it off
center.

When you lift the TJ, the stock track bar will be too short. Using it will cause the axle to shift to one side of the vehicle. The higher the lift, the more the shift. Relocating the track bar mount (to move it closer) or using an adjustable track bar are two of the most common methods to solve the problem.

John,
The best thing to do is to check with Tera about the retainer plates.

Any ideas on the rear conversion? I've read Stu's write up. Where would

Robert,
What is the chance that your axle is not properly centered under your vehicle? (that might explain the slight shift to one side)
As for one being longer than the other. When you are sitting on level ground AND you have the front disconnected, measure your rear height (both back corners) and see if you are sitting level. A sagging spring in the rear will cause the opposite side front corner to want to lift and thus make for a longer length on that disconnect side.

Robert,
When you lift the TJ, the stock track bar will be too short. Using it will cause the axle to shift to one side of the vehicle. The higher the lift, the more the shift. Relocating the track bar mount (to move it closer) or using an adjustable track bar are two of the most common methods to solve the problem.

Robert,
What is the chance that your axle is not properly centered under your vehicle? (that might explain the slight shift to one side)
As for one being longer than the other. When you are sitting on level ground AND you have the front disconnected, measure your rear height (both back corners) and see if you are sitting level. A sagging spring in the rear will cause the opposite side front corner to want to lift and thus make for a longer length on that disconnect side.

No I didn't. When we did the lift we didn't mess with the track bar at all.

How hard is it to do the adjustable track bars? If I am going to be doing this I want to do it once and have it done right. If I remember you had a write up on that when you did stage two build up on Lady. I'll look tonight.
