View Full Version : my tires too big?

i gave my used 35" bias claws to a friend and bought some new tsl/sx 38" tires. They say they are really 37.4 so thats what I'll call them :) I needed (wanted?) something taller than my smallish 35" bias claws
anyway, a few minor changes will be needed for my new 37.4" swampers to fit and work just right...
I'll talk more with Joe Daro (absolute offroad) about it to see if he can adjust my wheelbase just a little in the back to push the axle back just a hair. The rear tires contact the front of the rear wheel well pretty good. Last time we talked he had a concern that we keep enough thread engagement on those rear arm joints if we lengthen even just a little. Right now the thread are at full engagement so I think I have some threads to spare. We'll have to think of something else if that doesn't work (smaller tires? --- hope not. lol). Maybe a real stretch/comp cut/and relocate the tank?! that would be cool but I'm not ready for it yet.
Also going to put on some 1.25" wheel spacers to avoid rubbing and groove the tires for better traction.
Here are a couple quick photos from my camera phone...

Pull the bolts out of the rear, inner front fender wells. There are 4 per side. Replace them with 'button heads'. That will keep the tires from grabbing on bolt heads and they will slide right over the button heads which use a Allen wrench to install/extract.
There are lots of tricks to getting large tires to fit....:)

Cool Ben. There's no way you can go back to smaller tires. :D
At least it doesn't cost money to do a comp cut and relocate the tank. The stretch might though. You need another DD. :)

Oh Ben, you think you broke stuff before.......just wait. Ditch the corners with flares and get a set of smooths, then just trim them a little. And makes sure the bump stops are set right.

cool. breaking stuff. I've got a set of smooth psc crusher corners on it now. that a good idea about trimming. i'll see what I can trim off this weekend with my grinder and i'll remove the plastic flares.

Oh soooo sexy. When you going to try them out?
as soon as possible. :D but probably won't be for a another week. i need to make room for them with a grinder and then i'm going to groove the treads. then I want to see if Joe ccan do anything to push the rear axle back .5" or so.
in a week or two? Then lets go BREAK em in :D

Is there such a thing as too much tire?
Absolutely yes. I would not run any bigger than a 38-39 on a D44 with a very light skinny pedal, even with Alloy USA. I would not run any bigger than a 37 on a D30 with Alloy USA shafts. I would not run any bigger than a 33 on a D35, even with a Super 35 kit. I would not run any bigger than a 54 on a D80.

this weekend I want to see if I can move it back myself. I'm really pushing the limit of my mechanical abilities... here are a few questions I have...
do I just remove all 4 rear arms from the axle at once... then adjust their lengths giving them equal turns of the threads till they are all lengthened to .5"-1" longer than before... then roll rear axle back and simply reattatch them? do I reattatch lowers first or uppers first?... will it be a PITA to get the arms reattached? if so, are there tricks to make it easier?
or should I call joe and terron for help :) my concern is i'll get it apart and have difficulty getting it all back together & lineing up the bolt holes in the joints with the axle brackets and truss. would it be easier if I leave the tires on the rear axle while I do this or should I have it on stands with the tires off or does it matter?
Thanks!

Check the clearance between your gas tank first and make sure you can move it back. I normally jack up jeep and put jackstands under the frame just aft of skid plate. Then when you lower the axle to the ground it should unload your springs. Make sure you can wiggle your springs before you remove and control arm bolts. My jackstands are not tall enough for me to do this with the tries on. So I will remove tires, and let axle all the was down til springs are loose. Now disconnect lower arms at axle. You might want to put another jack under diff pinion yoke so the axle wont rotate on you. Crank them out to desired length, and do the same for other one Then reconnect them to the axle and do the same for the uppers. This could be dangerous dealing with loaded springs, so be careful.

It looks good. It will look better with the spacers and the axle moved back.
I really like your front bumper tied into the fenders as well.

Daro, of course, was correct as usual... I got the lower arms off and lengthened but I only dared to take them out between 1/4" to 1/2" while still feeling good about the amount of thread engagment.
but thats 1/4" more clearance than I had before. lol. Also got out the cutting wheel and did a little trimming/curling of that box shaped/lip area of sheet metal in the front of the rear wheel wells.
now I've got to do the upper arms.
I'll post up a couple crappy pics from my camera phone later to show the before/after.
Thanks,
Ben

rear axle is centered perfect now. They stuff into the wheel well real good now.
tires are grooved
wheel spacers are on
innovative balancing "dyno beads" are in the tires.
sorry, no pictures yet today of the finished product since its so late and dark outside.
I took a few though of the minor trimming I did and of the grooved tires.
Thanks again Kyle for those tips on the control arms and stuff.
* sorry the pictures suck and are way big. The first two attached pictures show where that boxed sheetmetal and lip are... that stuff had to be removed to prevent snagging my tires when theyd stuff. So I used a cut off wheel on my grinder and a big hammer to bend it away.

one final note... i noticed that with the wheel spacers on that, when turning, the front tires come ALOT closer to the rear of the front fenders (my tube fenders). I may either remove the spacers and just adjust the turn stops with washers some more -OR- call up Hunter and see if he'd alter my tube fenders to give more clearance behind the front tires -OR- get out the grinder again :)

how far did you push it back i got my rear setup, today and i have to do the same i set it up the way re says to start it out at (lowers at 32 5/8ths and uppers 33 /5/8) but i think it sits to far forward

on level ground the rear tires are supposed to be a little nearer to the front... when the suspension flexes and a rear tires goes up it also goes back. to get it just right may take some "test stuffing" . ha. i'll snap a side profile of my jeep tomorrow to show where mine sits.

Move the front axle forward about 1/4-1/2" too, it will cure the problem, and shouldn't cause any others.

thanks lance. Cant wait to try it out. I used a special heating gun and groving blades. the first tire took me about 40 minutes... then I got my routine down and the others only took about 20 minutes each to groove
