I have been out of town and just read this. I have over 700 VJC email LOL.
The Sierra Club at the coves clean up thread does seem to be getting out of
hand.

Randy see what you started when you thought about cleaning up the coves.
Let's just go 4 wheeling and clean the cove.

Subject: Re: AzVJC membership hits 2,200

From what I hear from other non-Jeep, non-4x4 clubs, on the average
only 10% to 20% of the members are active. Since it is too easy to
sign up to AzVJC (no fees, no meetings), more people sign up than on
other clubs, thus a higher difference between joined and active.

I also think that more members would participate if there were
more "easy" trail runs... look at the coves cleanup where 76 people
signed up. You don't see that turnout on trail runs with 3.0 to 4.5
difficulty. Beginners and many new club members get intimidated when
they just see hardcore or difficult runs posted.

We need more "easy" trail runs for newcomers to get their feet wet.

Well, I tried blackmailing Hunter for some fab work, in return, I would not
say anything, but that didn't work, so like a good little criminal, I have
to make good on my threats.

I guess it would help if your copilot was female, two hairy legged dudes
would just creep people out...(Hunter was with a woman.....this time).
You "wager" articles of clothing on whether or not you are making the
correct turn to get to the next checkpoint.
If the 2 people agree on the direction, no clothing is at stake, only if
they disagree. Both persons have to actually go in to the checkpoint in
their current state of dress as they arrived.

I think Hunter was looking for a "Creative" way to get naked with his date.
Of course, it would have helped if he wasn't always wrong about the
direction to turn.

Perhaps now that "The cat is out of the bag" Hunter will elaborate on the
rules.

Well.....I may as well continue to beat this horse with a "real world" example
of too much flex on a particular trail. I will also say that there are times
when a lot of flex helps. But this is a case where it really hurt!!! Some
guys on this list may have been at this trip when it happened.

Anaconda!!! I ran this with a buddy of mine about 2 years ago. His CJ7 is
REALLY built with Vortec 350, 4L60E, D44 rear, Currie 9" front, 4:1 t-case, SOA
front, and 1/4 elliptic rear. This thing is a flex MONSTER. Here is a link to
some pictures:

http://community.webshots.com/photo/22015053/22016377AszSeseNGq
http://community.webshots.com/photo/22015053/22016328laXTbiytCh

These were taken on Anaconda, and YES, that is still functional. What we found
was that the holes were WAY deeper than his suspension could reach. The
massive flex gave a lot of rear steer and would pull him off of the rock face
that he needed to be climbing. Also, the flex broke heims and such. He had
not installed limiting straps which would have helped. He ended up needing a
winch on a few of the falls because of this problem. The guys behind him that
were SOA made it up with much less difficulty. Our tires just floated over the
holes and allowed us to keep traction on the climbing tire.

Now look at this picture:

http://community.webshots.com/photo/22047015/22047096gIgUyLUukC

This happened on the way out. Turns out the flex had caused his rear pinion to
push into the upper "A" of his 3 link and bent the arm. We did not notice it
until the climb out when it completely buckled and put him on his side!!!

So this was one situation where the massive flex did not help and actually
hurt. BUT!!! Had he had limiting straps for this particular trail and
situation, he would have made it with flying colors. A lot of flex is
sometimes good, and sometimes bad. Does that help?? ;-)

The cheapest price usually will get you soft import gears. The best price I
have seen for good quality gears (Genuine gears) are at 4 Wheel wholesale. I
can set them up for you and teach you how. I charge $150 per axel.

I run 4.56 gears with 35" tires. I also have a 4:1 in the
t-case. If (when?) I were to go to 37" tires, I have no
doubt that I'd be unhappy with my current gearing. So my
opinion is that you should go to at least 4.88 (assuming
you have a 5-speed). If you're running axles that allow
even lower gears, I'd suggest considering the next level
(5.12 or 5.13?).

For context, I do a lot of rock crawling which is why I
prefer fairly low gears. But I also drive my Jeep on the
road.

Yup, you'll *need* (note: not "want") rear disk with the auto. When I did the auto swap the rear drums (running 35 tires) weren't even tolerable. On the trail they were down right dangerous. The rear disk swap has made a *TON* of difference, and this is running 35's. It will be worse with drums, running 37's.
Regarding the ZJ disk swap, as mentioned you need some custom retainer plates. I've been told by the person who made them original, that he's out and has no plans to produce any more. You can check with Tera. They are coming out with a rear disk conversion "for all TJ's". I had talked to them a few months back and they had told me "in a few months"... You could also see if anyone has a set of the retainers around still, and get some made to match them. I'm sure that there is a market for 'em ;)
BTW, the ZJ and Explorer rear disk are really similiar, but, besides the bolt pattern, the calibers are a little different, and the pads themselves are a little different. You can swap cailbers between them, but the pads have to follow the cailbers.
Another option, for a direct bolt in replacement, assuming you have a D44 in the rear, is to get a set of 9" ends, several places sell them, including Tera. Cut the ends off the D44 and weld the 9" ends in place (this is what Currie does with the D44's that they sell with disk brakes). This allows the Explorer rear disk to bolt right up 100%. It also allows the bigger 9" bearings to be used.

BTW, Scott, you asked me to get back with you regarding the combo valve. Just last night, I swapped in the combo valve from a '98 ZJ and also the master cylinder. The difference is amazing. I'll know this afternoon, when I drive home, or maybe even at lunch, if the combo valve solved the pre-load on the rear calibers. Right now I'm 95% sure it did. The other thing is that the M/C from the ZJ furnishes more volumn to the rear brakes, and the difference in the pedal is great !!!
Interestingly enough, a couple of the parts stores (Autozone, Checker), show the same part number for the M/C for the TJ's and ZJ's. Talking to my friend at the Jeep dealership, she assured me that they aren't the same. I checked the numbers on the M/C itself (they are made by Bendix) and sure enough, they are different, so I went on and purchased it.
Rear drums (or actually the wheel cylinders) require less volumn of brake fluid then calibers. The M/C for a disk/drum setup (like TJ's) are made to supply less volumn to the rear wheel cylinders. M/C for a disk/disk setup (ZJ's) supply more volumn to the rear cailbers.
I'm happy now !!!

:)
Fred

Joey K is right. You definitely want discs in the back. My rear drums were tolerable with 35's but damn dangerous with 37's and this was with the 5 speed that I could downshift to slow down. Now that I have 37's and an auto I wouldn't even want to attempt to drive it without some rear discs back there. Please, factor this into the cost of your upgrade.

If you have a Dana 44 talk to Stu about his ZJ disc swap. You'll need some custom retainer plates. If you have a 35 don't bother, swap in an 8.8 with discs. It's amazing how fast my Explorer discs will stop my Jeep with 37's. The ZJ and Explorer discs are damn near identical except for the bolt pattern on the end of the axle housing. Explorer discs can also be swapped onto a 44.

With the auto tranny and the larger tire size you might want to consider disc brakes too. Or larger drums.

Hi all,
I'm sure that most of you know how your jeep grows smaller after a while, well, I run 33's and 3.73's and am planning the second build up of my jeep.
This includes an RE 5.5 longarm and 37" tires (I think I'll just skip the 35" stage).

My question is; What gears do you guys run with 37's? I have an auto and a 6 cyl.

Any insight is appreciated.

Though my 4.56 felt a little on the high side with the 5 speed, they
feel great with the 4 speed auto.
