I saw your club stickers but wasn't so thrilled that you tail gated me

Hi all,
I'm sure that most of you know how your jeep grows smaller after a while, well, I run 33's and 3.73's and am planning the second build up of my jeep.
This includes an RE 5.5 longarm and 37" tires (I think I'll just skip the 35" stage).
My question is; What gears do you guys run with 37's? I have an auto and a 6 cyl.
Any insight is appreciated.

Thanks for the answers to my question. I've been thinking about flex and its value for a long time. It's obviously not a simple issue. Anyway, your responses have given me food for thought and since I'm sort of out of jeep mod money for awhile I'll have fun thinking.

Depends on what your looking for, what axles you have, and what t-case. With an auto that's primarily a daily driver, 4.56 would work fine and give you better gas mileage. I assume that you must have something other than a D35c is you're going to 37's.
For the trail - 4.88's would be best. It's true that 4.88's are weaker...but an auto is gentle on the gears, with a cooperative right foot. The 37's will speed you up in low range, and if your running a standard 231, you'll need to go low to slow down.

Joey K is right. You definitely want discs in the back. My rear drums were tolerable with 35's but damn dangerous with 37's and this was with the 5 speed that I could downshift to slow down. Now that I have 37's and an auto I wouldn't even want to attempt to drive it without some rear discs back there. Please, factor this into the cost of your upgrade.
If you have a Dana 44 talk to Stu about his ZJ disc swap. You'll need some custom retainer plates. If you have a 35 don't bother, swap in an 8.8 with discs. It's amazing how fast my Explorer discs will stop my Jeep with 37's. The ZJ and Explorer discs are damn near identical except for the bolt pattern on the end of the axle housing. Explorer discs can also be swapped onto a 44.

Subject: RE: Re: 37's and gears
John,
I have 4.56's and 37's.
The 4 speed auto in my TJ (swapped from XJ) turns 2650 RPM at 75 MPH
when the converter locks up in 4th gear. (.75 OD) This is perfect for
where and how I drive.
My old 5 speed manual ran about 150 rpms higher in 5th. (.79 OD) A
little math explains why. (2650 x .79) / .75 = 2791 RPM.
Of course the standard TJ 3 speed auto that you have is a different
story. Lets see if I can do some more math to convert to the 1:1 drive
gear if you had 4.56 gears. (2650 x 1) / .75 = 3533 RPM. If you slow
down to 65 MPH on the freeway: (3533x65)/75=3061 RPM.
So there you have it. My experiences with 37's and 4.56's and a stab at
what that would net with your 3 speed auto. I think you'd be fine with
the 4.56's. Any higher such as 4.10s and you'll have poor acceleration,
any lower such as 4.88 and old ladies would be passing you on the
freeway.
Hope this helps.

Hi all,
I'm sure that most of you know how your jeep grows smaller after a while, well, I run 33's and 3.73's and am planning the second build up of my jeep.

Thanks again.
