Ok heres my uneducated question of the week:

I have always said that when I get rid of the Land Rover and if I get a Jeep (read: when i get a jeep) I must get a manual.

Now after reading the Auto vs. Manual thread this has me thinking, what if I get an auto... I know it would be much easier to take my GF off-road and let her drive it rather than burn my clutch and replace/repeat only to have her get frustrated and mad...etc.....

If I got an Auto what type of modifications would I not be able to perform, if any?

Any other issues such as possible lower ground clearance, weak parts with a automatic not normally associated with a manual...etc....

Would I have to Re-gear if I were to run 35's??
(lookin at getting a JK after I return from deployment)

Sorry, new to the Jeep mechanical world.

from what i know its another pan to worry bout. ive go a manual in mine but have a auto in my explorer. that said i dont like the auto climbing rocks. dont know if jeeps are different but in 4lo i had less control on steep downhills and to much slippage on the climbs. my 0.02

I have run both autos and manuals in jeeps. For here in AZ I prefer the auto since I run a ton of rocks and very few hills. I climb much steeper hills than I go down. Also the auto is easier on parts unless you are geared low enough in a manual to not have to be working the clutch all the time.

The only way to figure this one out is to drive both and decide what is best for you and your driving style :)

I perfer Auto, I have 37's and I have a engine/tranny skid so no worries. I always get a kick out of the manual guys on certain obsticles popin the clutch and having to re-start 2-3 times.
