Well, I was just pointing out the fact that Yjs can flex better than
1/2 of TJs(your original comment;P), I never said they were better.
But in fact I did outflex 90% of the Tj's there. Believe it or not, I
too have other bills to pay, not as many as you and some others but
enough:) And Hackle never gets into these as he has a Stock YJ;P (ok
Nearly Stock) Well Im off to work to get money for more Jeep Mods:)
Its been fun.

Scott,
This is way cool.
There have been a couple of write ups circulating about the AW4 and I
was wondering if you guys incorporated them; one was a switch that
kept the tranny in first gear and the other was a switch that kept
the torque convertor from locking up.
I would be very interested to know how much wiring you actually had
to do and where with regards to the TJ PCM. Is this wiring, now that
you know what it is, something that could be done ahead of time? In
other words, could this whole operation be a "bolt on"? or is there
some splicing that prevents this?
Does anyone have any numbers of what the AW4 first gear is compared
to the TF999? Maybe Fred.
Did you get your SYE done on your transfer case? How long is the rear
drive shaft?
Where the heck is that write up? LOL

The large appliance type objects you refer to were very few in number
compared to the number of other targets, empty ammo boxes and spent
casings. In fact, there were so many casings on the ground that it
prompted one person to suggest using a front-loader to scoop it all

James,
If you look at the computer on the firewall you will see 3 plugs. All of
the wiring essentially ties into 2 of these connectors. If you could
get 2 male and 2 female plugs like those on the PCM then a harness could
be created that was plug and play.
Of course you need to find a vendor for these plugs first.

Scott,
Scott Kriuze,
I have a 96 XJ and added the switch to keep it in first gear. I had terrible
responses from it. It did keep it in first gear but I lost overdrive and the
transfer didn't shift normal. After I disconnected it, it went back to
normal. My brother suggested maybe I have to wire it after the computer for
the transfer. Don't know if that works yet or if it can be done. I wired to
the instructions I found on different sites that said the same thing. One of
the sites had a caution that if the switch was left "on" the transfer will
be stuck in 3rd gear. I think that happened to me and I never could get a
hold of the guy to find out exactly what he meant. Anywho, its back to
normal and since the XJ took a little swim this weekend, it has to dry out
(I pulled the carpet and seats) before I go in there and do any electrical
work. If anyone has any suggestions on this topic please let me know.

Dear Eric:
As a six year veteran of the Arizona State Parks Off Highway Vehicle Advisory
Group (OHVAG) from 1996 to 2002, and through a lifetime of experience in the
shooting sports and motor sports, I deeply sympathize with your concerns
about responsible and multiple use of our "shared land."
On a trip to Sycamore Canyon to view the results of a clean-up project by a
group off off highway riders, we came upon a huge mess created the night
before by a group of irresponsible youngsters who had come to the area in a
variety of on and off highway vehicles, hauling a variety of "junk targets"
including about 300 used telephone books. They had shot all of this stuff
with rifles pistols and shotguns, at night, and left all of it along with the
remains of their "party." It was in the creek and on the banks. We spent 3
hours "remediating the area and I called the Tonto to haul out the 3
truckloads of junk we had collected.
Some of the off-highway riders and shooters who had been in the area the
night before had seen and heard this group, but did not approach them out of
fear that a confrontation might escalate into an armed conflict!
Likewise, I have spent many hours at the various lakes in Arizona picking up
other peoples trash in areas that are only accessible by boat and/or OHV. As
a responsible boater, I deplore many of the things I see on the water, too.
Whether it is shooting, off highway riding, or boating, there is always an
element, a segment, of the participants that do not follow guidelines of
responsible behavior. I my last year with OHVAG, we funded a program to take
the message of responsible trail riding to the public. This was widely
backed by environmental and enthusiast groups.
We were warned in advance that getting the message out would take YEARS and
that the results may never be measurable! As an N.R.A.Training Counselor, I
have taught firearms responsibility and safety for 25 years, participated in
the Hunter Education Program, and trained instructors. Arizona State Rifle
and Pistol Association has backed and participated in the development of
range facilities and advocated their use as opposed to "desert shooting" for
over sixty years.
And yet, as your eyes have witnessed, we have failed to reach the slob
shooters, the slob hunters and the slob OHV users. I am sure that the Power
Squadron and the Coast Guard feel the same way about the slob boaters. I
have worked with the staff of the Tonto National Forrest on many of these
issues and I can tell you the news on that front is not too good. From the
professional manager's standpoint, the solution is simple, ban it! The Tonto
recently closed thousands of acres to shooting along the urban interface.
Their "moderate" approach is to regulate and charge fees for an activity and
use those fees to repair damage and hire law enforcement personnel to go out
and enforce the regulations.
As seems is always the case, the responsible users wind up with more rules,
less space and paying the tab for the slobs.
How can we change it? Well, I think that some changes are in order.
First, there should be a "Hotline" established to report abusers on any
specific area, body of water, etc. Second, enforcement should be dispatched
to the area of a report immediately and issue citations for offenders.
Third, all users of our land for whatever reason should have to acquire a
permit that would include a clear set of guidelines for the activity and a
list of the penalties they might incur for ignoring the rules, as well as the
boundaries of the area.
Areas that have historically been abused should have sign-in and sign-out
facilities to help identify the worst abusers and they should be fined.
Responsible user groups should ban together to purge their ranks of the
slobs. One of the dirty little secrets of all of us collectively is that we
know some of the offenders and don't do much about it. Educate them one on
one or collectively, but insist they act responsibly or leave the group.
This is what we do at our shooting ranges and it works.
I could go on and on, but I think my position is clear. I will continue to
work on these problems in the areas I participate in and try to encourage
others to do the same.

John,
In the scenario you described, lockers may suffice and a lot of flex
may not be necessary. But the scenario you described is not the only
scenario that matters. You can get into situations where a lack of
flex will result in your Jeep tipping more than it would if it had
better flex. The result of this is that your Jeep could tip into a
rock wall and incur body damage. Or, it could tip at a point where
forward progress is prohibited.
Now, to keep things in perspective, I'd say that base on my own
experiences, the lockers will suffice most of the time. The scenarios
where the lack of flex really hurts you are few and far between -
especially if you run easy to moderate trails.

Janice,
Someone may have already responded about this but in case they did not,
I'll toss in my comment on this.
Your fuel system (tank, lines, etc.) are attached to your frame. While
the axles underneath the frame are certainly flexing, your frame, gas
tank, and fuel lines are not, IMO.
I would ask them to demonstrate how all of these things, which are
firmly attached to the frame, could suffer from your vehicle's lift
flexing up and down.
The other fishy thing is that they installed your new fuel pump 3 months
ago and now the lines to it are cut? Hmmmm......someone didn't know
what they were doing.
IMO, they are blowing smoke at you, big time.

Subject: [az_vjc] Spook Rally & TJ question
Hi,
Enjoyed meeting Zilla, Bill & Neal at the spook rally & having a few
beers
with them & John H. Also got a quick "hello" into Nassar, who was very
helpful in helping me find the Rally.
Well, the long & short of it is I was at the Rally, but missed the
rally. Saturday morning on my way to the games, my Jeep stopped
working. I got it towed into Darner & just got off the phone with
them. I was told that the lines to the fuel pump were cut; probably by
my
suspension. About 3 months ago, they had installed a new fuel pump.
Two
weeks ago, my muffler was busted at the weld & Darner said it was
probably
due to my suspension. I've had the lift on my Jeep for about 1-1/2
months. What I'm beginning to wonder is:
* Once I have a lift, is Darner no longer interested in working on
my
Jeep & providing warrantee on their work (thereby, it's all due to my
suspension)?
* Is it possible that the lift installation is actually causing
these
problems?
Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. I'm getting hit for another
$225 @ Darner, and I didn't even do any wheeling this weekend.

Dan,
What do you think? I think that if you put two Jeeps together of
equivalent lift, tire size, wheel width, wheel base and center of
gravity, the only difference is the suspension, one can out flex the
other. I think they would both land on their sides at the same point on
an RTI ramp.
Flex is most needed for traction not to keep you from rolling over.

Assuming said wheel has a rock to land on that is closer to said
wheel's max "flex" distance. If it is not and you keep going, then
there is a good chance you will roll over. But I've never experienced
that, so that is just my opinion. :D
There are lots of other factors that will determine when you have too
much flex. Because there are no laws governing the amount of flex a
vehicle have (other than the late, great Newton), the amount of flex
that you have on your jeep is maximum when YOU think it is an
optimum. An RTI score of 1500 maybe be good for a mall-crawler, but
if the rest of the vehicle is not built correctly around it, i.e.
tires, wheelbase, driver, it can get you into a lot bad situations
quickly. A very experienced wheeler can probably take a jeep with a
lower RTI score, and out-wheel (in a direct comparison, with all
variables eliminated) a first time wheeler in a super-flexy buggy.
But there are other drawbacks for both leaf and coils, such as
drivetrain requirements. Now being that a factory TJ and a factory
YJ will not have the same ramp score (or so I've read in comparisons,
and will also presume), the TJ also has issues such as rear steer to
deal with. Not an issue with no lift, but add in a ton of lift and
short arms, and it makes wheeling a real PIA (or at least for me it
was/is).
The debate between leafs and coils is as old as the debate between
man an woman. Ok maybe not that old, but close to it!!

Those comments from Mr. Allison were quite similar to those heard during last weeks NOHVCC conference.
I did notice that Mr. Allison was also supportive of enforcement actions and holding those that cause these problems accountable for their actions. I know of no one that understands the true problem (as he does) who does not wish to see that segment of the population removed from any form of participation in the sport.

I don't know the underside of TJ's that well so I can't
comment on the fuel line issue. However, I will say that
a lift kit CAN cause problems with the exhaust system if
it includes a t-case drop and/or motor mount lift. These
items reposition some of the exhaust system mounting points.
A lot of people install t-case drops and motor mount lifts
without knowing and giving consideration to this.

Did you get your SYE done on your transfer case? How long is the rear

Where the heck is that write up? LOL

The large appliance type objects you refer to were very few in number
compared to the number of other targets, empty ammo boxes and spent

prompted one person to suggest using a front-loader to scoop it all

James,
If you look at the computer on the firewall you will see 3 plugs. All of
the wiring essentially ties into 2 of these connectors.

Hi,
Enjoyed meeting Zilla, Bill & Neal at the spook rally & having a few
beers
with them & John H.

Thanks for sharing that, Eric.

Subject: Re: Spook Rally & TJ question
I don't know the underside of TJ's that well so I can't
comment on the fuel line issue. However, I will say that
a lift kit CAN cause problems with the exhaust system if
it includes a t-case drop and/or motor mount lift. These
items reposition some of the exhaust system mounting points.
A lot of people install t-case drops and motor mount lifts
without knowing and giving consideration to this.

Subject: accident on I-17
Sunday on the way home from Spook Rally a car rammed into the side of my truck do to their inability to pay attention to stopping traffic. By chance did anyone happen to observe the accident or know someone who did. The DPS drove by not stopping even after I attempted to flag them down. My cell was dead so I couldn't call for an officer. I got the individuals insurance info, but I would still like to have someone who saw the accident. Myself and my family are fine and there was little damage to the truck.
