I am building a trailer and need axles. Ive done some lookin around, and not sure if I should use the mobile home ones or not. I have seen some write ups saying it is not a good idea to use these.
Any way, I a am looking for a good deal on something that will work RIGHT and not compromise safety. Any one got any, or a line on some, or an old junk trailer i can cut up? I am trying to do this within a tight budget.

thanks for any help

Ya, save yourself a headache and dont use mobile home axles. I would recommend Auto Safety House. Do it right and once.

Out of curiosity can you elaborate as to why? I could see perhaps axles from a mobile home as they live a hard life sitting under a mobile home for 20 years, but why not RV in general?

I fixed my post to mobile home axles. The biggest problem is the hub assembly that takes bolts instead of lug nuts. Also I have seen mobile home axle bearings costing around $100 buck each, you can buy a complete axle for nearly that.

I have a mobile home axle, shortened, under my small 4x8 trailer. Thing I don't like about it is the tires. They ride like rocks (even fairly low on pressure) and when they're worn out, I've been picking up new ones for about $25 each, but they always have a rim.

So I'm left with rims and run out mobile tires laying around.

Now that the Jeep is lifted, I'm going to put a standard axle under there with standard Jeep bolt pattern.

The other thing is the tires don't last very long. Don't have deep treads and usually start seeing fabric in a year or two. I'm guessing it because of the 1-way nature of the tires...

My preference is to not use 'em...

Mobile home tires for $25 each!!!! My 5th wheel uses those too, the 14.5" rim type. Where can you get them for $25 and are they decent for a good size trailer, my 5th wheel is a 30'

Dunno what part of town you're in. Last set I bought was at a tire shop in an old Exxon station (or Esso) in Apache Junction. South side of the road on Apache, 1/4 west of the Junction itself.

Next time I head down that way, I'll see if they're still there and try to catch the name...

Was an independent shop...not a slick glassy store. More take-offs than new stock if you know what I mean...
