The Spook Rally was by far one of the best 4x4 events I have ever been too. Its nice to see a club who can run a show as complicated as this was and do it well. Many, many thanks got the Arizona Rough Riders and some of the sponsering clubs that helped. (forgive me for not remembering). Alot ofextra hard work went into this that many will never know. Great Show! Will be back for sure next year.
It was also nice to get a chance to hang out with some other AZVJC'ers. Scott Maiden, Bill Mish, and Neal Han****. (Interesting crowd, I assure you. Learned some new words from them..) I saw some other AZ stickers too, Allison (I think) with the Maroon TJ and a gold Cherokee (2001) which belongs to Jack.
Thanks to all again, had a blast....

Yeah 5.5" coils with short CAs, thats a good idea;P Too bad I only
have half the flex:)
As for Jon who thinks flex is unimportant, IMHO you are correct to a
point. But you will also roll over alot more, and make your life in
general more difficult. I think there is such a thing as too much
flex, and you will know when youve reached that point when you have
no stability on sidehills. I think anywhere from 900-1200 on a 25*is
a good amount of flex to have.

Assuming said wheel has a rock to land on that is closer to said
wheel's max "flex" distance. If it is not and you keep going, then
there is a good chance you will roll over. But I've never experienced
that, so that is just my opinion. :D
There are lots of other factors that will determine when you have too
much flex. Because there are no laws governing the amount of flex a
vehicle have (other than the late, great Newton), the amount of flex
that you have on your jeep is maximum when YOU think it is an
optimum. An RTI score of 1500 maybe be good for a mall-crawler, but
if the rest of the vehicle is not built correctly around it, i.e.
tires, wheelbase, driver, it can get you into a lot bad situations
quickly. A very experienced wheeler can probably take a jeep with a
lower RTI score, and out-wheel (in a direct comparison, with all
variables eliminated) a first time wheeler in a super-flexy buggy.
But there are other drawbacks for both leaf and coils, such as
drivetrain requirements. Now being that a factory TJ and a factory
YJ will not have the same ramp score (or so I've read in comparisons,
and will also presume), the TJ also has issues such as rear steer to
deal with. Not an issue with no lift, but add in a ton of lift and
short arms, and it makes wheeling a real PIA (or at least for me it
was/is).
The debate between leafs and coils is as old as the debate between
man an woman. Ok maybe not that old, but close to it!!

point out it still out ramps you. Some of us have other bills than our Jeeps
so when the time comes that Im ready to have long arms built than I will. Now
if youd like to say that it cost more to build a TJ than a YJ...I will give
you that...but you always want to point out how much better YJs are than TJs
yet havent made any valid points to back that up.
Easy on the Jeep God thing...its not very becoming of you :) and it will
pass with age.

So after Stu got done hamming it up for this picture we went for a drive. I was immediately impressed with how smooth the Cherokee AW4 transmission shifts. Stu and I came to stop and gave each other a high 5. All the hard work has paid off. (My wife is happy too. She's been a Jeep widow for the past week while I worked on it in my free time every day.) I spent the rest of the day driving it all over the place. I will be doing a full writeup with wiring diagrams and pictures soon and post a link.
I'd like to take a chance to thank Stu Olson for stopping by whenever he could. Especially with the wiring. We spent many hours studying the TJ and XJ wiring diagrams and had 95% of how to tie the XJ TCM into the TJ PCM figured out in advance. He made sure the wiring was done in a correct manner and was very instrumental helping to determine that I had everything correct and together we worked through that other 5%. THANKS STU!!!

Hello All,
Keith Bowcut is leading a Woodpecker (Upper) trail run on Saturday, November 16, 2002.
When: Trip will leave at 9:25am
Where: We will meet at the open area at the entrance to Cottonwood Canyon road off the hwy 79. Contact me if there are any questions.
Rating: 4.0+
Length: 3-4 hours
CB Channel: 24
Upper Woodpecker is a wash that runs to the Woodpecker Mine. Years ago this wash was the actual road from the mine. There have been many hours of fun playing and traversing on this trail. It offers rock ledges, cracks, "tippy spots" and is the home of the infamous "Fire Hole". It was one of the first "extreme" trails offered in Arizona.
Over the years this trail has seen the result of "rock stacking" and "ramp building" that has down rated the trail from a 4.5 to a 4.0 but it still has a number of "play areas" and lockers are still required for the harder portion of the trail.
Upon exiting the wash you will climb to the top of the hill where the mine is located. There is an amethyst pit mine near the entrance to the Woodpecker Mine where you will most likely find several "rock hounds" or mountain bikers

Let me say it another way. Maybe in a way you will all understand. ;/
Why don't we post signs at the gun shops where shooters pick up their ammo and supplies. Signs informing them if it's not clean they can loose it. And maybe some gun/rifle clubs might help out. To be quite frank about it I wouldn't mind it if you posted the information at hobby shops either. Maybe we can get a knitting club or a model train club out there too! The more the better!
The last cleanup I attended at the Table Mesa area was very impressive. It was an impressive showing of OHV people. I am pretty sure there was not a single target shooter out there, unless it was because they were a OHV enthusiast as well. What +90% of the trash was, was from shooters. Sure it might have been people that find that area closer and cheaper than a landfill that originally left the trash. But it is my belief that - if you shoot it you own it whether it be the shells or the targets.

Hi All:
Yesterday a few of us ran Raw Deal until we got caught in a down pour and exited at the split where Upper starts.
Please remember "Pack In, Pack Out." I have not run this trail since the Spring time and I was disgusted at the amount of trash on the trail, especially near the "air down spot/parking lot." I'm a target shooter myself, but my friends and I always pick up our shells and even make the place look cleaner than when we arrived to the spot.
I know we have a Cove's Clean-Up coming up in a few weekends, I think we should pick a date and organize a clean-up of the Table Mesa Area. I know a few club members cleaned up the Terminator's recently, but we need to keep up on keeping the areas clean. Unfortunately due to my work schedule I have not been able to attend any of the last land use meetings, but I'm going to try my best to attend in the future.
What would be a good date for a Table Mesa Road Clean-up Run? Please any input would be grateful. We can always set-up a poll and go from there.

That would really help with trail use and the good image of Jeepers.
Because cleaning up other people's garbage is fun. Good clean fun.
I can't wait to do it some more. I do it for the glory. I do it for
the souvenirs. I just do it. Sometimes I think about throwing stuff
on the ground just so I can bend over and pick it up for that

can then be shot at (maybe) and then used as an excuse for a good day

If you can ramp 900+ on Hunter's 25 degree ramp I think anything more than that is definitely over-rated.
In the scenario you mention lockers are only a band aid that mask your limited articulation. When the going gets really rough you'll notice the limitations. Lockers with respectable flex is really what you want.

Assuming locked axles.
Does it really matter if:
A wheel is hanging in the air because the axle will not articulate:
Or that same wheel is falling down to the rock under it with only the axle's own weight to provide a basis for traction and push.
This is a serious question. I drive a CJ that could win the stiffest jeep of the club award. I wonder what the difference is between a wheel in the air and a wheel drooping to the ground when the wheel in the air will not spin?
Someone please tell me if flex is more than just cool.

Many, many thanks got the Arizona Rough Riders and some of the sponsering clubs that helped. (forgive me for not remembering). Alot ofextra hard work went into this that many will never know.

Sometimes I think about throwing stuff
on the ground just so I can bend over and pick it up for that
refreshing "I just saved the whole damned planet" feeling! I love to
recycle: I take perfectly good stuff and turn it into garbage, which
can then be shot at (maybe) and then used as an excuse for a good day
of sitting on the dirt picking up all of the little pieces that Mr.

Gimme a Hefty Cinchsack and a big floppy hat and I am set for an

Those are supposed to be disposable links. You are supposed to take your
Jeep home, lift it, and then install longer links. They were only
intended to be used while loading and unloading the Jeep off of the
train and then onto the truck. Kind of like those stupid paper floor
mats and the plastic stuck on the hood. <Grin>

So my friend got the okay from his wife to put on his suspension
for his TJ. So we have been wrenchin on it since 10:30 w/hour or so
rain delay. Before the rain hit we had finished the front. So far so
good.So now we are starting on the rear. I jack up the rear put the
stands under and to my suprise I find plastic sway bar
exstentions.WHAT IS UP WITH THAT?.Those bar pins for the shocks that
has got to be the biggest mistake that DC has made. I have to laugh
at the plastic parts on a suspension component.Trying to save some
money I see.The install is not really that bad.If this was an install
on a YJ we would already be on the trails testing.

TIA

TJ's with 4 speed autos are better than all of those 3 speed autos and 5
speed manuals In YJ's and TJ's. So there! :P
Really though, this one gets rehashed every six months or so. Comes up
like clockwork right after the Big 'O' and tree hugger posts settle
down. See you all again in six months. Same big agruments, same big
channel! LOL

The conrol arms arent the question at hand...but if you want to go
there...with shocks that were too short and the short arms that you want
to
point out it still out ramps you. Some of us have other bills than our
Jeeps
so when the time comes that Im ready to have long arms built than I
will. Now
if youd like to say that it cost more to build a TJ than a YJ...I will
give
you that...but you always want to point out how much better YJs are than
TJs
yet havent made any valid points to back that up.
Easy on the Jeep God thing...its not very becoming of you :) and it
will
pass with age.
Concidering that Hackle ramps way over a 1000 he should be doing the YJ
bragging but he has age on his side. :)
Well its been fun...these TJ vs. YJ convo are always sooo much fun.
hehehe Later Sharky(and his short arm TJ)

This may sound dum but I noticed the 258 [6cyl] uses a
plate on the passenger side of the bell housing to
engine, would it by chance use the same bell housing
as the v-8?
[I've got a 3 speed bell housig for the 6cyl.]
