Ive currently got MTRs in the 33" flavor and would like to step up to 35s but am thinking about tires other than MTRs... Ive got a 30 up front with alloys and a locrite so thats a concern IE no super heavy tires and no 36s the rear is a 44 with stocker shafts and a noslip. Ive got 4.56s in the pumpkins and the stock 2.72 gears in the tcase although I see a 4 to 1 or a box4rocks 231 to 231 doubler kit to help with the crawling in the rocks..

My choices
Maxxis bighorn 35"
Truxus MT 34 or 35"
BFG MT 35" Id do the KM2 but they dont make them for my size yet!!
Swamper of some sort must be streetable(Its a swamper I know) and this would have to be a 33" due to the weight of the damn things
Mickey Thompson radial baja claws (perhaps my fave choice) Ive heard good things about them but they are pricey as hell..
Procomp XT muds dont know much about them..
Cooper STTs the new ones I heard some good stuff about these...

Whacha all think I ran on the judgement day run on the 101 course and Im pretty sure my tires and my rear bumper were my cause of being limited(It was wet and the MTRs do not like water in anyway)..

As far as driving style Im not a throttle jockey Lance can attest to that(I was the blue xj right behind ya) so the front should hold together well and I saw enough people out there running 35s on their LP 30s to realize it my not be a huge concern..

I would honestly stick with MTRs if I was gonna drive it on the street. I think they have a bad rap for being a mess when wet. I have been going through sidewalls in mine, but I think I have been airing them down too low. If you get 35" MTRs and keep them at about 11-12 psi on the trail, they're pretty good tires. I also think that they are the best compromise for on/off road.

I've heard good things about the KM2s, but since they don't fit on your rig, I guess it doesn't matter.

i have 35's mtr and i could barely make it up some of the parts on broken arrow after it rained i was running 25 psi cause i didn't think i had to go any lower since that's an easy trail. i normally run around 9 psi on the other trails though and they do okay but are horrible on ice too. i'm going to try the mt mtz's next i really like the sidewalls on them and they look like they are still pretty street friendly too

I've watched MTRs on very capable rigs struggle with small amounts of water on the trail.

Cooper STT's I've heard great things about, and I have pro comps (m/t's not xt's) and I think the tires are very road friendly and do well off road.

For a DD, that sees quite a bit of trail time, I would go with MT Radial Baja Claws or Maxxis Radial Trepadors. Both are very tough, give good offroad traction, but are still a radial. As others have said, MTRs SUCK when wet, street and trail.

I wouldn't get the BFG MTs right now. Not because they aren't a good tire (which they really are), but because the new design will be coming out soon and if you need to replace a tire, you won't be able to get a matching one.

Well Andrew, most of my friends are running other than MTR's and I now have
gone to 37 MTR.s because they have always done me good, both on the high
way and off road, EVEN WHEN WET. And they are sure a heck of a lot cheaper
the the new Vogue tires everyone is running. (35's)
Some think if your running MTR's in the wet or snow, your F'd! Remember, I live in the wet and snow country and like them.

We're running the new Procomp Xtreme M/Ts...suppose to wear better than previously...but we haven't had them long enough to know yet. They have performed quite well off road thus far.

The new BFG MT KM2s are already out, but tire size is very limited to the bigger sizes right now. Smaller sizes coming in about a year.

I know, I am just saying that if he gets the old one now (KM-which is the only way you can get a 15" right now), and needs a new tire in 12 months, he will have to get the KM2, which won't match the other four (KM). Final release for smaller rim sizes starts in September. I will step up to 35s when they come out.

I can't imagine they will discontinue the KM that quickly. The KM2 is mainly meant, from what I've heard, as a more agressive option to the KM.

The KM2 is the replacement for the KM. They stopped making the larger KMs before the KM2s came out. It was really hard to find a KM in a larger size when in the transition stage.

So it looks like the STTs or Baja Radial claws as the treps are awesome but wayyyy out of my price range and do they even make 35x12.5x15s for the treps??
No one liking the bighorns??
Made by the same company as the trepadors!!!

lancetkenyon

Which sucks, cause I run the 37-12.50-17s KMs on my tow rig.

Ask RokNRich/JPCooler(Rich), he used to run the Bighorns. Ask JWohl(John) how he liked the SSTs, I think he had them for about a month. Ask 1BLKJP(Jack) how he likes his MT Baja Claws, he runs the hell out of them. All of these guys had these for a street driven rig, and wheel really hard.

Tires with good road manners.. Yet capable offroad
Cooper's
Pro Comp's
Truxxis
BFG's

Swampers and Mickey's are built for offroad abuse but not so much on the road manners..

I don't know much about the Maxxis bighorns.

I had a set of Bighorns, 315/75R16's.

Pro's-
Reasonably cheap @ $150 ea
Balanced good and rode well on the road
Similiar traction to an MTR (what they replaced)

Con's
Currently special order/backorder
Similiar traction to MTR's :)
Sidewalls are two ply (though they do make some 3 ply), I went through 3 sidewalls in about 6 months, two of them were on the same rock/same time (passenger side), even though I had the certs, I had to order and wait for replacement, plus pay shipping. :(

Overall I wouldn't say they were bad tires, just not suited for what I was putting them through. Plus the lack of support locally was killing me. All that being said, not sure I would recommend them to anyone wheeling their Jeep, I would run them on a truck or Jeep that only runs forest type roads.

Go with the Cooper STT's. Really reasonable priced and they hook up great. I run 37's and trailer my rig. My friend has the 35's on his LJ and drives it as his daily driver. He made the big fall on Payette with no problem!!!! I think that they hook up as well or better than any non sticky tire I've seen. The sidewalls are pretty bomber with lots of traction lugs. I have also only lost one bead and I was only running 3psi at the time. Never lost one at 6 or 7 psi. If they made them in a 40" I would buy them as my next set as well.

Okay thats 1 for the STTs although I spoke to another who pulled them off due to chunking of the tires excessively and replaced with trepador only to replace those...

Extreme MT Procomp 1

Radial Claws ?? anyone running them chime in..

Truxxs can also chime in..

keep em ideas and opinions coming folks its getting narrowed down real fast..
thanks

I'm happy with my 315 MTR's. My rig is daily driven and they seem to be wearing well, balance easily and work great when aired down to 12psi.

I would have to agree with Lance on this one. I've run Pro Comps And BFG MTRs. I've recently switched to the Maxxis Trepadors and LOVE em. They're much quieter on the road and very capable on the trail.

I have Mickey Thompsons MTZ. They are 35 x 12.5 x 15. Seem to be a great tire so far. Offroaded a few times now and have not let me down yet. Got to run FJ in the creek when it was running really good and had grip. As for the road they are not an AT, but seem quite to me. I have heard of balancing issues with them but mine are round. For price i got them at 170 per tire plus mounting and balance. Pm me if you like that idea and i can tell you where to go.

i have about 9000 miles on them now, and i have only rotated them once... no chopping or cupping or excessive road noise

i think they should have called these tires the rock terrain instead... they grip very very well, and i have yet to come even close to popping a sidewall

as for mud, i have only tested them one time. im not neccessarily a 'mud junkie' but when i did take them out, i had no problems, and it got my jeep nice and dirty

as for the sand, i aired them down to 25 pounds, and i have yet to get stuck... i didn't have any trouble as far as not being able to go somewhere
