I have a 96 xj. When I have to brake a lot I start to get a clunking noise in the front. If I touch the brakes the noise goes away. I have checked the brakes, bled the brakes, all steering parts are tight and in good shape.

Could the caliper's not be holding pressure when the get hot? I can hear it and feel when I go slow after I have to stop alot.
I feel it in the brake pedal.

Help please. I might have to start changing parts if I cant find the problem.

thanks david

based on your complaint, I'd say you probably have some rotor runout (warpage) that causes the pads to shift around excessively when you're not on the brakes altogether. runout can be felt in the brake pedal when you apply the brakes, and sometimes in the steering as well.

I'd recommend you take it to a shop and have the brakes inspected for runout and pad wear, and a check to see that the front wheel bearings are ok.
