View Full Version : Rotating TJ rear coil mounts & reversing them

I looked close at the rear upper coil mount pads and it looks easy to reverse them & move them back a little, but the coil pad is offset to the inside so if I cut and turn them 180* the upper mounts would be wider then lowers- I assume that I need to swap the left side mount for the right side mount for it to work- Is this correct? Any TIPS?
I would like to cut and adjust for high pinion the lower rear mounts also, any guideline for how much or does it depend on my setup? (I planned on just setting them to as close to level at ride height)
Last, here's the calling for a welding party
I had a line for a mobile welder guy coming to help out but it fell through, I planned on getting all the mounts cut off and ground clean for new placement and then having the mobile welder guy come by (we had estimated about an hours worth of welding)
anyone have a contact # for a mobile welder?
I have one other lead but haven't heard back from him yet 602-616-5086, I got # from here
Jeep is somewhat apart but could drive it with some work, I just thought it would be much easer for me to chop & grind and save prep time if work was done here
my registration and insurance is expired on jeep so work in my garage is preferred or if someone local in FH has welder
I have some cash but also have some goodies that alot of people would be intrested in
Thanks.

Something that I thought of, and might want to list, is if you have 220V in the garage or close... 30A would be good.

Check with Don (savagesun) as he just a few days ago posted a link to his site about this VERY thing...

I have a large solar water heater that is hard wired 220V and at least a 30A, but no outlet (I need to have one put in, I'm not sure what outlet to use as i've seen a few, also I have an old Craftsmen Arc welder with an odd plug)
I also have the laundry room close to garage with an elect. dryer (120/240V 3wire 24A) with outlet

Thanks, I'm familier with that thread, it does not address swapping mounts from right to left nor could I find info on his sight

Thanks for the offer, I haven't used a stick welder since the mid 80s, unless I have someone whos good with it to help I would rather do it with a MIG
I know how to MIG but would be considered a novice
BTW. I have a fuel cell so gas tank is not a big issue

I also have a Lincoln wire feed welder. It is 110v flux core. George

Might consider dropping Don a PM... Probably be willing to discuss it with you... Just a thought...

when rotating upper coil mount pads in back to level them out, do I swap sides right to left? I ask because the upper coil pads are offset to the inside of frame rail.

Don't forget an extension cord if you use the welder. At least 25ft, and that's a little short for garage use:eek:

Thanks to DesertFab: the answer is YES, swap sides

Good idea, Thanks. whats the most economical way for a long ext. cord?

Ok, I got all rear upper and lower coil mounts cut out and found an unexpected issue
I moved the upper mounts back and set them level for mock up, set my 5.5 RE coils & wheels in place and put weight on Jeep- It now sits to low in back (about the same as 3-3.5" coils)
the way the brackets are set now, the front and rear of spring cup circles are about 1/8" away from frame (for reference, on right side the cup is within 1/2" from stock frame track bar mount)
The coils are 12" from base to base with full weight on them (this was confirmed correct for RE 5.5" coils)
My plan: with front RE 5.5 coils in place, find out how much to space down the top perches and build something out of box or C channel steel (I want to avoid using any coil spacers) Is this the best way to solve this?
I figure this loss in height is due to bracket being closer to frame and to the top of arch in frame with no bind
