I think we should invite a Park Ranger, Sheriff Joe Arpiao [spelling],
and maybe the Arizona Army National Guard too, with a flyover by
four F-16's from Luke at 200 feet, passing through the sound
barrier RIGHT over the Coves. (That would be so cool. heheh.)

TJ's do not have a full time 4wd mode. They have 2wd, Part time 4wd
High and Part time 4wd Lo. You need to have a 242 or 249 transfer case
to get full time 4wd.
Part time 4wd means you only use the 4WD with conditions are slick and
no center differation is required. Full time means that you can run the
4wd all the time because it has center differenation.
The 242 has a full time mode that uses a open differential in the
transfer case. The 249 is viscous coupled to provide a limited slip
differntial in the transfer case.
The 231 case that comes in the Tj only has a full lockup 4wd so it is
only part time.

Subject: [TR] Technical Workshop - Saturday, January 11, 2003
Hello All,
Joe West is leading a Technical Workshop trail run on Saturday, January 11, 2003.
When: Saturday, January 11th, 2003
Where: My Home
Rating: 2.0-
Length: 4 hours
CB Channel:
After the success of the first kill-switch workshop, I have had numerous requests to hold a second workshop. I have picked a date for the second kill-switch workshop a few months out to enable people to sign up over a longer period of time. I will update the information in this run as necessary, but for the most part all of the information you will need is here. The limit for the number of rigs we can fit in my yard and cul-de-sac is 30 so this will be the maximum number of people who can sign up. Please note that YOU will be doing the work in this workshop and I will be guiding, assisting, teaching, and testing your installs (and fixing any problems which may occur).
All short wheel base Jeeps such as Wranglers and CJs, Willys, etc can choose either a kill switch OR a combination hoodlock and kill switch. Since short wheel base Jeeps do not come from the factory with a hood lock, I would recommend people install the combination hood lock kill switch.
All long wheelbase Jeeps such as Grand Cherokees, Cherokees, Wagoneers and other vehicles that already have an INSIDE hood release will only need to purchase a kill switch.
The price for the HoodLock/Kill Switch is $43 and includes everything needed to install the kit.
The price for the kill switch alone is $15, and includes everything you will need to install the switch.
Unfortunately, because of problems I had with purchasing hoodlock/killswitches for people who didn't show and didn't pay (leaving me stuck with the hardware), it will be necessary for people to pay in advance. I will notify people when to pay as the time for me to order the hardware grows closer.
The purpose of this "run" is for me to assist members of this group in installing kill switches in their Jeeps.
The kill switch type will be determined by the year, make, and model of the Jeep being fitted with the switch. For those members with Wranglers/CJs and other SWB Jeeps with no hood locks, I will encourage a group buy of a hood lock kill switch combination. Once I determine how many people sign up and what kind of vehicles they have, I will put together a list of required materials and purchase them for everyone. Individual members can choose what kind of kill switch they want or I will determine it for them based on vehicle type if they have no preference. I will provide all tools and will purchase bulk materials (wires, switches, solder, connectors, electrical tape, zip ties, etc) which everyone will split the cost of. If you are interested, please sign up.
VERY IMPORTANT:
All Participants in the clinic MUST give me the following information:
1. Year and model of vehicle on which we will be installing the kill switch
2. Do you have a FACTORY service manual OR a service manual with wiring schematics for your vehicle?
3. Which of the following tools can you bring: drill, drill bits, wire cutters, metric and/or standard socket set, wire strippers, wire crimpers, nylon ties, electrical tape, soldering iron/solder, long extension cords, multi-outlet adaptors/short extension cords, volt-ohm meters or DVM, blowdryer (for heat-shrink tubing).
VERY VERY IMPORTANT:
The clinic will be held at my home in Mesa Arizona on Saturday morning, January 11th starting at (for now, this may change) 7:30AM. I believe that you can plan on spending a good 4 hours at my home, and hopefully, if everything goes well we will finish around noon on Saturday.

You can obtain very good directions from Yahoo maps... but a brief set of directions are as follows:
Take 60 headed East and get off on Gilbert Road.
Head North on Gilbert Road (Left) to Broadway Road.
Head East on Broadway (right) to 30th street (30th street is the FIRST residential street you can make a right on just past the light at Lindsay... do not turn into the small community just east of Walgreens.
Head South (right) on 30th Street.
30th Street dead ends in my Cul-De-Sac and my home is the one with all the palm trees in the yard.
PLEASE PLEASE park along 30th street and WALK to my home. The reason that I am asking this is because I want to group like vehicles together to simplify installations. After everyone parks along 30th street, I will have a short meeting on my front porch and then I will ask all YJ owners to go get their vehicles and we will place them in one location in my yard. I will then ask all TJ owners to go get their vehicles and will park them in another location... and so on until all vehicle types are grouped together in my yard or cul-de-sac.
After everyone is grouped together, I will walk everyone through the steps of installing kill switches... and we will work together as a team to get them installed. To avoid having any electrical problems, you will be required to disconnect the positive lead on your battery BEFORE we do any work on your vehicle.
Please plan on bringing a cooler with drinks, cups and/or snacks if you will need them.
I will post this entire post to the "trip" on Azvjc.org if people need to reference it at a later date.
If you have suggestions and you see something I have forgotten, please let me know.
And last but not least, if you would like to come hang out and HELP or just watch and learn... I'm sure we could use all the help we can get. Everyone interested is welcome to show up.
Kind Regards,
Joe West

Subject: [TR] Technical Workshop - Saturday, January 11, 2003 - Reminder
Hello All,
Joe West is leading a Technical Workshop trail run on Saturday, January 11, 2003.

Neil, you didnt offend me, I kinda like the term you give yourself of "rock nazi" and your opionion was well taken and you are to be commended for sticking to your beliefs, even if me or other people think that are maybe a little on the right. I would love to go wheeling with you if my YJ would be up to the challenge with its Ford and Chevy parts in it.................. Stu, YOU ARE THE MAN ! I have been impressed with both yours and Joe's comments since 1st joining the VJC. You keep up with your BLM contacts //////// you really gotta love a G-man that invites you to a trail and describes it as narly ! I have read your comments about the meetings last week and it sounds like you are witty and articulate enough to hold your own and even gain ground with the opposition. I vote for you to be the "delegate" to the BLM meetings. I am sure that most of us here have much faith in your ablility and commitment and you not doubt can be counted on to report back to us all of the gory details..........Now will someone tell me why the AA4WDA or whatever it is (and I was at their Jambo last weekend and forgot already) doesnt allow us delegates......sure seemed to be an awful lot of VJC decals there last week for us not to have a say in it.

Ok, then why can't the state or national organizations that we support get funds from these corporations ? Who else has more to loose than MORE, Rubicon Express, and all of the other suppliers out there of our sport if our sport is stopped by the greenies and their war chest. Hell, lets all write to Jeep and tell them we are buying Tacoma trucks if they dont donate :-)
I have no idea why I am doing so much writing the last couple of days on these subjects but it seems like the right thing to do for someone like me how is passionate about Jeeps and wheeling.

If you are an ASA memebr (individual or through a club) you can
attend any one of the meeting they hold which are published in the
wheeldust. All delegate status gets you is a voting voice.
So if you want to be informed do so; but don't blame others for not
let you be when it is in your power.

I feel your pain, we dont have the BLM out east here but we do have the NPS and the forest service. Having said that, everything seems to be going to fee areas here in the east $80 a year for a permit and that only covers ORV priviledges at one location not all. And most of the trails that I used to run have been closed to vehicles permanently. So for the most part we have to spend our quality wheeling time at ORV (I guess y'all call them OHV in AZ) parks like Paragon (check it out at www.paragonap.com) and pay $40 a day to be led around like a dog on a leash by one of their guides. The state DER has closed nearly every trail to vehicles but not to them little 3 and 4 wheel ATV dirt rippers. Have you seen the damage they do and most of them dont seem to respect the marked trails and go off digging new ruts where ever they can go, I would be willing to bet they cause more damage in a year than we would cause in 10 years. So consider yourself lucky that you still have trails to run and fight like hell to keep them. Now if it came down to not wheeling or paying an annual fee to use the BLM lands what would you do. Believe it or not, there is an advantage with fee areas. It keeps the idiots out that only want to come out one time and see what they can do in their 4x4;s which we all end up paying for the damage they do in the long run. Every month when I come to AZ I am filled with feelings of envy as to what you have there and how lucky you really are. I was even more envious last weekend as I spent Friday and Sunday at the Jamboree and Saturday at the Broken Arrow run. Now more than ever I want to move to Az, or course my gal lives there and I think in the long run it would be cheaper to move there than to continure paying use fees back home here and $40 daily wheeling fees.....and I would save about $700 a month in costs to visit for 4 or 5 days. Chit with $700 a month I could buy a new KJ and TJ and lift them 6" ....or maybe just a new Rubicon TJ.............lol...........Like I said be thankful for what you still have, fight like hell to keep it and quit all the *****ing which gets nothing done and get involved and do something about it ! Wny not get a petition started and give a copy to the BLM in Washington (Hell I would deliver it, I only live an hour or so away) your state senators and reps, your US reps and senators, Pres Bush (I dont know but I heard he was sypathetic to our cause to some extent) and anyone else you can think of. I would be glad to deliver any copies to anyone in DC that you would want me to. Dang, you have a million people or more in the Phoenix area, I cannot belive that a club that boasts 2000 members can;t come up with a petition for at least 20,000 signatures, each of you must know 10 people or more. Think about it, do you think someone in Washington would take notice to more than 20,000 signatures on a petition. You need to get together and figure out how you want to word it, if you want to trash Francisco and maybe you can get Brian the great guy attorney to help you. Damn, I will help you here if I need to by getting several hundred signatures from Pennsylvania. If we have a dealer here that can send donations for the Coves clean up, we can find people to sign a petition, after all, we ALL have a stake in this, now and in the future. Your comments and thoughts are most welcom but your ACTION is most NEEDED !

I think we should invite a Park Ranger, Sheriff Joe Arpiao [spelling],
and maybe the Arizona Army National Guard too, with a flyover by
four F-16's from Luke at 200 feet, passing through the sound
barrier RIGHT over the Coves. (That would be so cool. heheh.)

My home address is:
649 S. 30th Circle, Mesa, Arizona 85204.
My home phone is:
(480) 325-9419
My cell phone is:
(602) 524-7632
Kind Regards,
Joe West

My home address is:
649 S. 30th Circle, Mesa, Arizona 85204.
My home phone is:

My cell phone is:

Kind Regards,
Joe West

Hello All,
Joe West is leading a Technical Workshop trail run on Saturday, January 11, 2003.
