So Dan,

What do the Aunt Suzie's knitting club women look like?
I will take one in my Jeep.

I have an XJ and the light always says "part time hi" when engaged in 4 hi-
or "part time low" when engaged in 4 Low. When in 2 wheel drive, no light is
on. I have the np231 transfer case. I always assumed that this refers to the
fact that the diffs where open on this jeep originally (locked front and rear
now). Maybe I am wrong.

True, but the light should be on all the time and go off or change to
full time when shifted to 4hi or 4lo.

All TJ's are "part time 4 wheel drive"... The only time that they are in
4 wheel drive, is when the xfer case is shifted into 4hi or 4lo.
The "dealer" (person) that he talked to, doesn't know what they are
talking about.

A friend I work with bought a used 2001 (or 2002) and this past weekend
went up to Four Peaks to test the 4 wheel drive. It is a 4.0L automatic.
When he engaged the transfer case into 4Hi the Part Time 4WD light came
on. The question is: Is there such a thing as part time 4wd in a TJ? He
went to the dealer and they said that only TJ's back east have full time
4WD. Is this a load of crap or what?

2WD is 2WD not Part time 4WD. 4Hi is "part time 4WD" believe it or
not the front tires are not in 4WD until your rear tires slip. You
only are in full time 4WD when you are in 4LOW. -Rob

I did the full width swap in mine using Chevy axles. I'm using stock
Wrangler leaves with one or two added. I patterned my setup after Ross
Skinner's setup. It has proven good in Ross's Jeep and now in mine. If you
want pictures or to swing by my place to take a look at it, just let me know.

Just FYI, the front setup was a little interesting with reguards to keeping
caster in a usable range. I drive mine DAILY to and from work with 38's and
full width axles. Drives great with no issues.

"Part Time 4WD" really means that you're not supposed to have it in 4WD all the time (on pavement) since there's a hard link between front and rear axles, and that would cause a lot of undue stress on drivetrain components. To my knowledge, TJ's don't have "full time 4WD", but I might be wrong. I know that Grand Cherokees have both a "part time 4wd" and a "full time 4wd" setting. The "full-time 4WD" is meant for on-pavement driving.

Sorry Charlie (as the tuna ad says). No so with a TJ and a 231 xfer case.
When you shift the xfer case into 4hi or 4lo, the front *IS* engaged. Jack
up the front end, shifht into 4hi or 4lo, then try to turn the front
tire(s), or, with the front still jacked up and the xfer case in 4hi or 4lo,
slide under the Jeep and turn the driveshaft by hand (or try ;) ).

Further thoughts, the is *NO* diff. action through the xfer case (231 in a
TJ) and there would have to be for the scenario that you describe to occur.

I am still moving in the next few weeks so I need to sell it. Price is pretty firm. Thanks

I removed the one in my now MIA 92 YJ and in my

difference in street handling but a huge difference in
on trail manners. Removing that bad boy really helps
keep the rear rubber on the ground, IMHO.

Thank you. I could stick to monosyllabic words but is much less fun for
me to do so. As for the opinion part, indeed; most everything I write
is my opinion unless I use the word fact in my pontifications.

I think that this is a healthy discussion, and don't find it in the
least bit destructive. I like hearing your opinion, and even more, I
enjoy disagreeing with you and the resulting debate which occurs.

I look forward to seeing you on the Coves cleanup.

Did you keep the 6 bolt Chevy pattern? Did you do a shackle reversal
up front?

That's cool. I'll try to post more tonight when I can spend more time on the
board. I have very strong opinions on this subject and would love nothing
more than to keep this thread alive for days.....even at the risk of turning
it into soporific drivel. ;-) I'll be at the Spook Rally if anyone wants to
continue this discussion on and uninterrupted basis. But be warned, I like
the open spaces that "this" chasm provides. :-)

Kind Regards,

I just wanted to know if this was the same person who
posted yesterday that they have a sierra club sticker
on their vehicle.
This is just my opinion but I believe it would
be a bad idea to involve them (sc) at all.Bottom line
is it wont make one iotta if this person sees us in a
different light, the Sc dosent want us on our land
with anything that has wheels.
I would rather be crumpled at the bottom of
the chasm standing up for what I believe in than on
top holding hands with the enemy singing Kumbyah (sp).

I can't believe that those tree-huggers would call us off-roading mobs!

The nerve of them?!

BTW- wasn't Imperial Dunes the place where the Ranger was assaulted by
off-roaders? I heard they mobbed him...

I have nothing to do with the Sierra Club. I have been involved in the
fight for OHV access in AZ for over 20 years. I am 28 years old, my first
brush with access being cut off in AZ was as a 5 year old riding a dirt
bike (motorcycle) up on the Mogollon Rim. That first fight was WITH A
SIERRA CLUBBER in the 1970s. This isn't anything new to me.

Standing up for what you believe in is not the same as cutting off yer nose
to spite your face, which is more like what you are actually accomplishing.

Standing up for what you believe in is using all methods and processes
available to you in order to keep our land open. If a SC asks to come on a
cleanup, will it do us any good? Maybe, maybe not. If we refuse them, and
tell them to go jump off a cliff does that do us any good in our fight?
Definitely not. So I choose maybe. *shrug*

Rear Track bar is useless on a YJ, IMO. In fact, if you've lifted the Jeep, left the bar on, and do not have a relocating bracket...the bar may remove itself after a little hard wheeling.

Removal of the front trackbar and swaybar is more of a personal choice. It's possible, but leaves your on-road handling compromised. FWIW, I don't run either of those bars either.

Just wondering... How many YJ owners (and similar)
have removed the rear track bar from his/her jeep?

Take off the Jeep blinders, buddy. Most of the vehicles on extreme
trails give merely the appearance of being a Jeep. Damn near
everything in them is off some other vehicle. It's not what you buy,
it's what you build.

Speaking of Sedona, I just got back from a shunpiking trip to Los Alamos
to pick up a couple of microvaxxen that a friend there was throwing out
because "he didn't have enough room.". Heh. Geeks. =) Anyway, I am
now a proud owner of a microvax 3500 and a microvax/II rack-mount.

I took the back way out of Los Alamos down off the mesa through a
place called Jemez Springs. It's like Sedona/Oak Creek Canyon, but
about a thousand times prettier. =)

If anyone wants a report of the entire shunpike (I had a wild fun
time, no four-wheeling, though, except for one stretch north of
Bingham), I can write it up.

Tony
