I got the interface cable today for the Kenwood D700A and Garmin Etrex Summit ... plugged in and powered up ....

Started reading the directions for the APRS set up and became nauseated within 5 minutes .....

:aagh:

What is this you speak of?!

Does it act like a transponder/beacon for 911 through the radio?

APRS (Automated Packet Reporting System) lets you connect a GPS to your VHF radio and broadcast your position, weather information if you are set up to do that, and you can even send simple text messages. Others can receive your information and display it on a map on their computers, and some of the newer radios can show the information on their displays. Depending on which GPS you're using it can even get the information and display it on it's map (useful for search-and-rescue when you want to see where other members of the search party are). Here's a link to a wiki page with more information (http://info.aprs.net/index.php?title=Main_Page), or just google 'aprs' and start clicking on links ;)

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!

Well, it helps that I have done a few times, the first one was trial by fire.

Here is a link to my post about my install.

Well, I've gotta have APRS after our adventure Saturday night. I've been reading online and am a little confused with information overload. I currently have the Yaesu FT-7800. Besides the radio, what do I need to buy for hardware? GPS? Cables? How do I program this on my radio to transimit? If APRS is running, can I still talk on other frequencies/repeaters?

Ill do my best... working a CRAZY schedule...

Wed. 7-11am then 10pm - 6am

no time to adjust and couldnt get to sleep until 12:30 today so ended up with 2-3hr broken sleep in the last 36hrs...
I have no idea what my work schedule is for Thurs - Fri with any luck after 6am I can get a 4 day weekend... BUT Ill do my best to get it installed & some what programed.
Ill also see if I can do a quick set up & drop it into the company truck & talk on the net / post net tonight.

OK

Im still toying with the new radio, I did hook up my old Garmin eTrex Legend and nothing...
So im not sure if its a NEMA issue or something different.

*EDIT / UPDATE*

Ok turns out you CANT trust everything you read on the internet (yes I already knew this)
So after a quick wire swap the GPS was talkin to the 710a

BUT I've yet to find myself on the Findu site...
