Guess Joe started another forum for us to play on. Thanks Joe!! :drummer:
I got my General License a couple of years ago, mainly so I would have better communication capabilities in the event of an emergency while on the trail.
The Code requirement has been eliminated since I got mine but that is a whole different story.
I figured with the Ham Radio and GPS coordinates help could be directed to the exact location.
I run a Yaesu FT-7800R with a Separation Kit in my JK.
I'll have to get some pix together and post them up.
Just wanted the first post in a new forum.

Just wanted the first post in a new forum.
Ha ha, I was thinking the same thing then got side-tracked looking at the HRO catalog online :laugh2:
I've been licensed since '92 and have an Amateur Extra ticket. I'm currently running an Alinco DX-70T for HF and a DR-605TQ for V/UHF communications; I love it when I can be driving along and talking to someone down in Australia or over in Japan. I agree with you Jim, having good comms out on the trail can be important. I've also passed the Level 1 Emergency Communications course that ARRL offers, although I haven't done much with the knowledge.
I'm looking forward to getting to know some of the other hams on the forum, I think it'll be beneficial to all of us.

Hi guys I am K7ANT, Extra class and been a Ham since 1968, ......wow! didn't
realize it's been 40 years! Anyway, I have had a Icom 270, vhf/uhf radio in my
jeep for a number of years, but hardle use it any more. It's for when I really need
it I guess. At home I have an 80 tower with a six element 10/15/20 meter
tribander and a whip for uhf and a corner reflector for vhf. I have a couple of
different hf radios and a 2kw amp and mostly run 10m or 20m CW. I need to do
some work on the tower and replace some bad coax, but usually can hit the Mt.
Ord, Mt Elden and Pinal Mt repeaters to talk into the valley on vhf.
I have been primarily a DXer all these years with over 330 countries confirmed
on the HF bands.

At this point, I'm probably the newest Ham in the AZVJC. I passed my test on Tue 1/15/08 and am still waiting for my call sign assignment and ticket. I have a Yaesu FT60. I am looking forward to learning as much as I can from each of you.

Got my license in 94 and forgot to renew it as I wasn't active; dumb. So now I have to retest, hopefully in the next month or so. I heard that Devry isn't hosting the test any longer. Anyone know what's up with that? Anyway I have a Yeasu 350 in mint condition which is anxious to get back on the air. Look forward to talking to and ultimately meeting some of you. I was in the ARA back in the 90's, will join up again as soon I get my license.

K7AZV - Technician since October.
Yaesu FT7800R in the Jeep.
Working on getting my General and plan to get Extra also. Besides the band privilages, I'd like to become a VE and help out at testing sessions. Also trying to learn CW although it isn't required anymore.

Hey everyone... I have been a Ham since 1994... The same day I took my technician test I also took the Morse code test and passed the 5wpm. So I got my Tech Plus license. I could only get to 10wpm but needed 13wprm for the General license. Well, I guess over the years they have phased out the tech plus license so I am now a technician. One day I plan to study and take the General. So far all these years I have been content with the privileges that I have. Hope to see everyone on the net soon. My radios are a Kenwood TH-78a Handheld and Yeasu FT-8800R.

Yes, on Feb. 23, 2007 the FCC removed the code requirement for HF operations. With the spread of digital technology it was deemed no longer essential. And now that we have new technology that incorporates the internet (IRLP and Echolink) you don't even need to have a General or Extra class license in order to make long-distance contacts.

arrl.org lists numerous testing sites, dates and times throughout the valley. There are several coming up this month. Some require pre-registration, but not all. I took my test at St Francis Xavier (Central/Camelback) on a walk-in basis.

Hello all, I have been a Tech since 12/06. I became a HAM mainly for caving purposes. Its a nice way to chat on the way to the cave, but the real reason is we are working on a cave radio project on 75 and 80M bands. I am currently studying for my General so I can actually play with the cave radios. Right now my only radio is a ICOM IC-02A.
Here is a link to KE7HR's radio page. Paul is the lead instigator for our cave radio projects. http://members.cox.net/caveradioat/

Hey all,
New here ans stumbled on this thread.. I have been a Ham since I was 10 (1990) when I got my novice, and am currently a General. As of right now no radios in the jeep, took them out until I got my hardtop; now that I have it I want to get them back in.
If anyone is in the Tucson area and is interested in Ham radio, testing, etc send me a PM, our local radio club (radio society of Tucson) provides testing every month!!
73,
Dave :D
