First, I'd like to say that I hope everyone had a great Christmas and a safe and fun New Year.

So, it's that time again to replace my tires. I currently have 31" BFG ATs and would like to replace them with something else.
I mostly see street, sand (go figure), light mud and rocky trails up in the Payson area. I don't need a heavy mud tire or a tire for crawling.
So, I figure you experienced folk could lend some advice. Basically, looking for a nice 31" tire that will wear and balance well, but will get me most places off road competently.

Won't running 33"s require a regearing or something?

Cooper STT.
Pro Comp radial MT.
BFG MT
Good Year MTR
Dick Cepeke Radial MT

Are all comprably priced tires that will see 30 to 40 K milage and sever you well offroad.

I just read a few excellent reviews on the Pro Comp Xterrain. Any thoughts on those?

I'm not to worried about noise. Any recomendations on where I could get those for a good price in 31"s (Gonna stay with 31"s for a while as that's what my wallet permits....saving for wedding)

I would recommend the MTR. Although I probably will move to another tire once I'm a trailer queen I really think they're an outstanding tire for rock crawling IF you still need a tire that does everything else well. Yeah they slice from time to time but they're a really good street tire, they wear nicely if inflated currectly, they balance well, they're relatively quiet, have good road manners, etc. To exceed their performance offroad (IMHO) you have to go to a tire that does all those other things crappy. Ever drive next to a bias ply creepy on the freeway? ;)

I like the pro comp all terrain. I run it on all of my vehicles. 35's on the excursion PSD and 33's on the crew cab PSD. they have a 40,000 mile warranty and ballance well. of all the all terrains I have purchase over the years they are the best wearing. in march pro comp will have the buy 3 get 1 free sale.

I run mickey thompson MTZ's. So far, they are awesome tires. I run them at 30 pounds on the road and 10-12 on the trail. Plenty of bite and quite on the road other than the usual hum.

No..........

Depends! If you have stock 3.05 gears....definately! If you have 3.73s, you might get away with them....for a while. I would regear if I went from 31s to 33s with a stick, but an auto might help some. I would stick with a BFG AT or BFG MT. I had a set of 32-11.50-15 BFG MTs that lasted over 50K miles.....but then again, I had a set of 35" BFG MTs that wouldn't last 1K before I sliced a sidewall. Not the tires fault though, it was the trails I started running. I don't worry about that now.....37" Maxxis Creepies.

I like mine too, they look freakin sweet too if that matters. I got them for a few reasons, but I didn't think I would think they looked so cool. I love the sidewall treads on Mickey Thompsons...comes in handy too when aired down on the rocks.

I would also suggest the old tried and trues BFG KM, but I think those are gone. If you can score a set they are one of the best "mostly street" mud tires. I had them on the TJ and now those same tires are on the CJ and they have been awesome on each. I replaced the BFG AT's on the CJ with them and didn't look back. Better by a lot, especially in the muck up in the woods.

The new BFG MT KM2s are supposed to be EVEN BETTER on and offroad! THat is pretty good.

but they are a little more pricey(I think)...they are my next tires when I go up to 35's.

A big problem with them right now is size availability. Only 17" rim and up I think.

Yeah, I would have bought them when I went with the MTZ's if they had them for anything but 'bling" wheels.

Just wanted to say a quick thanks for yalls help.
I went ahead and got some 31" BFG 'muds' and I must say, I'm rather happy with them so far and on this rainy day, I've already noticed a huge difference as the heavy lugs just push the water away in puddles where as my old ATs scared the crap outa me.
Thanks again yall.

Just remember, the MTs are not siped, siping usually helps a lot in the rain. They have more leading edges to bite onto surfaces. Glad you like them.
