I'm looking into placing TJ flares on my YJ which I see is a common conversion to gain a little clearance with a little cutting. Are the Rubicon flares the same as the standard TJ but just a little wider, any other differences.

I didn't use TJ/Rubi flares but the Bushwacker extended flares. They required me to cut a bigger wheel well. This works great for my 33s. The only issue I have is I am now kind of a bast**d child when it comes to rocker length. I just ordered rocker guards and when I put them up to prepare for install I realized they will need to be shortened. I knew this going in but when I call manufacturers they told me the TJ rockers were short enough but would not work logistically because of mounting issues... I just need to find someone that can make a true clean/straight/exact cut on them for me so I can mount them.

I'm planning on building my own sliders but want to until I install TJ flares so I can make them fix the flare. I've thought about the Bushwacker but there a little pricey, how wide did you go, I see they make a 4 3/4, I think the Rubi's are 4 1/4. Do you have a picture?

Yes to your orignal question. just an inch or so wider & smooth instead of the textured finish. Will work great for your Jeep.

Might as well pimp my '05 Rubi. flares, just enough rash to make them look used. $60 come and get them in Goodyear.
