auto tranny question

can any one tell me if a tranny out of a 1987 xj will work in a 96 xj

I am not an expert on jeeps and parts interchange, but there was a world of difference in the mechanics of all automobiles, not just cars in that 10 year time period.
An 87 trans is most likely totally mechanical controls except for the Torque convertor, and a 96 will most likely be computer controlled. Physically they may fit, but operation wise, they are not the same. Putting an older trans in a newer car may work, but you will have issues with the speedo, service engine light and other things. ( I am thinking the instrument cluster as well.)
