At 10:00 today I received a call from Wayco that Mobius (Eric) passenger side D35 broke on the Crown King Run.
Ted (Ted) is coming back into town for parts. Help is not requested at this time
There is limited cell coverage but Wayco can be reached at his cell:
six zero two - nine zero eight - zero nine zero zero
Will post up more information as I receive it.

Was Wayco wheeling with them (him)?
Yes, Wayco went on this run.
I just spoke to him again (11:30 am) and the situation is as follows:
The broken axle stub is out and the jeep is ready for a replacement to be installed
Mobius (Eric) girlfriend stayed with the jeep on the trail
Ted and Eric have gone to Ted's house at I-17 and Deer Valley Road where Ted has a replacement axle (one would think that with a D35 he'd have it in the jeep.....)
The rest of the group of some 5-6 jeeps is continuing with Wayco up to Crown King.
Neither Wayco nor I have a cell number for Ted, Mobius, or Mobius's girlfriend so they are effectively out of touch at this point (don't shoot me, I'm just the messenger!)
Wayco is to contact me in another hour for an update.

If you are wheeling with a D35 you need to keep extra shafts with you at all times... even at the mall:mickey:

I question the wisdom of leaving the girlfriend with the Jeep. I hope she's okay out there & no un-savory types happen along.
John (Junky) found a girl in a stuck FJ Cruiser while we were at the Sycamore Clean Up. Like he said, if he'd been the girl's father, she wouldn't be dating 'Mr. Leave the Girl with The Stuck Truck' anymore after that.

On the one hand, I agree with you and on the other hand there are plenty of ladies out there that are perfectly capable of shooting the nuts off of any un-savory types that need to be...uh..."de-nutted".

Timing is everything, there was complete 35 rear (Drum to Drum) from a TJ up there just ripe for the picking about ¾ the way up the L shaped play area. A guy was there right before us in a cherokee to pick it up.
Good luck with teh repairs.

Yes, you're right, there are girls like us around. Hopefully they had the wherewithall to leave her armed. If you can believe it, the girl Junky found didn't even have water.

Spoke with Wayco around 4:15 and he was going by Cleator and had been out of touch with the other group. I just touched base with him again just now (5:20 ) and he is at I-17 and Carefree and turning back West to go and find Eric and Ted since Wayco thought they might not be all that.....familiar.....with putting in the axle. He had to stop and fix a flat tire.

I was in the group with WAYCO. Mobius had two passengers with him today. Mobius left his girlfriend and other passenger with the jeep while he and Ted went to get another axle.
It was the right axle that broke. Billy 4 hp and Mobius took the differential apart to make sure that all it needed was the axle. It also needed a brake shoe. Brake shoe just broke. Ted had spare axles at his house.
The two who stayed to watch the jeep plenty of food and water and I left them with a few beers to drink when they were waiting for Ted and Mobius to return.
They were talking about maybe going up to Crown King after the repair.

I can't count how many times we've had threads specifically about crown king runs where someone broke a d35 axle shaft while on the trail. I for one refuse to wheel with anyone with a d35 that does not carry axle shafts and as a club I think all of us should refuse to wheel with anyone that doesn't carry spare axle shafts for their d35. If we refuse to wheel with them, perhaps they'll finally get the hint? Come on guys, this is like a woman going back to an abusive boyfriend. How many more threads are we going to have like this before people learn? Crown King is one of the worst trails I know of to break down on. It's an easy trail, but it's long as heck and you're very far away from help/parts.
Joe/moderators... why don't you put up a sticky on the top of the runs section stating if you have a d35 and don't carry spares don't bother signing up or showing up for a run. There's many people on here that would lend you their spares if you just ask... borrowing spares before you break down will make everyone's run a lot more enjoyable.... especially on this trail. I rather have someone show up to Asylum with a d35 without spares than Crown King due to the logistics of getting help while you're up there.

Just got back, still no call from Eric. It's been a long day for me, don't think I would be much help now. I guess we will just have to wait to find out how this turned out. Thought I was prepared for almost everything, Hyjak was full of spare parts, but I don't carry extra axles anymore. Wouldn't have one for a Turdy-five anyway.
Without rubbing salt into the wound, I would encourage anyone that wheels a D-35 to carry spare axles. This would have been an easy trail repair if the proper parts would have been there.
I too, need to either get a 44 or a couple 0 spares for my 35

Well, since Mobius was with Ted (with a running vehicle) I am pretty sure they could get everyone out if the repairs couldn't be made today...
We left them in pretty good shape (I hope) Mobius popped off the rear cover and I removed the odd ball inspection plug that his limited slip had (TruTrac I think). We were then able to get to the c-clip and remove the broken stub.
I then gave Mobius a crash course of reinstallation and he seemed fairly mechanically inclined... Honestly it was going to be more of a pain in the butt to replace his broken brake shoe then to put the replacement axle in....
So as others have stated, I am in the same boat, I can't believe how bad these newer D35 axles are... I remember wheeling the crud out of a YJ with the no c-clip version and it tooks years and I mean years of abuse with an ARB....
Mobius and Ted, please post up your end results...

EVERYONE, and I mean EVERYONE who wheels should carry spare axleshafts. Not just the Turdy five guys. I carry a spare full set of D44 fronts, and D44 Alloy USA spares for the rear. Even a D60 can snap a shaft. Usually it is fatigue that breaks a shaft in an axle other than a D35. They just suck. Wayne, throw your stocks back in your rig for spares, someday you might thank me. If not, someday someone else might need it, and you can be the hero on the trail with the spare part. I have loaned out WAY more parts than I have needed myself, but it makes for a much nicer day. Beats running back into town for parts. There is no way to carry everything that might break, but a good selection of spares is invaluable. Others will pipe in on what they have needed, but here is a good list to start with:
axle shafts
u-joints(axles and DSs)
u-joint straps/u bolts
yokes
pitman arm
unit bearing
tie rod/TREs
misc nuts/bolts
tire plug kit
air source
all fluids

Nope, I got all of that and more in my CJ7....
And it also helps to have ALL the tools to change said axle's with or any other trail repair (within reason)... That's the best thing about traveling with the same group time and again, you get to know what each other carry's for parts and tools... If your buddy has something you may need, bingo, and vise versa....
That being said, I would like to add this... Sure it nice to have others work on your rigs (shops, a buddy, etc), but you NEED to know what it takes to make the repairs YOURSELF...
Now please, please don't think I am harping on anyone from today (everyone was extremely capable and the whole group pitched in to get the problem solved and quickly)...
I have been doing this for awhile, I have been broke myself and I have fixed the broken. But knowledge is golden when your out in the middle of nowhere...

Not really. I carry all that and more. Most of it fits behind my back seat. Also throw in an ice chest, jumper cables, air hose, and a family of 4. I have a decent set of tools that are in a flat case that fits under the rear seat, and the shafts sit on top of the rear wheel wells and are strapped down. A bunch more tools, with pitman arm puller, screwdrivers, a bunch of pliers, snips, sockets, wrenches, etc are in an ammo can. Almost all of the small spare parts are in another ammo can. All the fluids and misc larger parts/tools are in a plastic bucket(which doubles as a fluid catcher). Tie rod usually resides across the rear cargo area. Hi lift is secured on the passenger side right above the axle shafts. OBA box is in the back too.
Here is a pic. ALL the parts listed are in the Jeep, just packed very well.

I actually don't carry a spare tire. I run the Maxxis Creepy Crawlers, I have never, nor heard of anyone else, cutting one. I do carry a plug kit, with about 70 plugs left in it. I have put in 16 plugs in a 4" sidewall gash on my old BFG MTs. I went through 5 tires in a year with those. I have wheeled for 11 months on the new tires, with well over 100 trails on them. 85% have been over 4.0 trails. No cuts yet. The guys I wheel with mostly run these or MT Baja Comp Claws. Just a thought, how about we put together a spare parts depot. This way when a trip is organized, an assortment of spare parts could be picked up before the trip for the benenfit of the group in case breakage occurs on the trail. After the trip, the unused parts could be returned to the depot and stored for another day. If parts break on the trail, the person who uses the parts has to replace them to the depot.
I have a complete brake drum to brake drum D35, tie rod and drag link from a 94 YJ I could throw in. An inventory could be be keep on this forum for all to view and utilize.
hope the finger heals.. Also hope you unstacked..

No wheels included. He is getting rid of them because he drives his Jeep to and from the trail, and missed a lot of the northern summer runs because he didn't want to drive it up there. These tires are, in all honesty, brand new. But NOT for a DD. I don't think it is a problem running them on the street for 50 miles or so, but a run to Payson is more than he wanted to run them. He is going back to 35" BFG MTs.:aagh: Want contact info?

Breaks up oil. I spray a ton on any spills, wipe it up, then put peatsorb on it. I saw a front axleshaft break, and cleaned up the gear oil off the rocks with it. Put it in your rig.
