Subject: Re: alumi-flex tierods for $89 new
Hey Joe. Have you ever seen a chromoly or DOM tierod break? I have
seen all kinds of tie rod materials break. If you're on a trail and
doing some hard wheeling in the rocks, even you should know this
(been on a trail lately?), parts will break when stressed enough. I
think that it is a good product and you are referring to it
as "aluminum". It's not completely aluminum. It's an aluminum alloy
and it has different characteristics than any of the aluminums that
you might be comparing it to. Do you know the makeup of this
material? Have you tested it yourself? Anything that we take out on
the trail, no matter what it's made of, can break. Period. The
aluma-flex is flexible so it can absorb some of the energy that is
applied to it and return to it's original shape, thus making it able
to take the force better than a steel that will resist bending and
when it does, it's bent. Sure, steel can be straightened, but do you
want to be on the road with a Jeep that has had it's steel tie rod
bent and reshaped, therefore weakened? I don't. :) Not to start
anything or make this a huge ordeal, Joe, but please, before you
attack a company and their product, get ALL the information and back
your opinions up with facts. You might get better results and aviod
legal action from someone if you have proof to back your statements
up. Have a great day.

Subject: Jawbreaker
Fellow 4-wheelers.......
I'm writing because I need your help...... or at least your opinion on this
issue.
I'm sure most, if not all, of you know the touchy situation Jawbreaker Trail
has been in over the past couple of years. The Tucson BLM would like
nothing better than to close this trail to OHV........ PERIOD. This trail
has been used for many years but was opened to the ASA4WDC Jamboree trail
lineup a couple of years ago. Because of this, the exposure has been such
that the impact from vehicles not truly capable of traversing this trail
without doing damage, making by-passes, or stacking rocks has brought the
impact to this canyon/trail to a serious issue. Several biologists and
numerous land specialists have viewed this trail over the past couple of
years and the bottom line decision is: "Riparian, functioning but at risk".
This means simply that any more impact will CLOSE this trail to us.
On to my main issue............. I have been trying to encourage the Tucson
BLM office to "build an obstacle as tough or tougher than the main obstacle
within the trail" with signing explaining the issues. The mitigating
actions of "building an obstacle" to limit the vehicle access has been used
across the country with huge success. The reason for this action in lieu of
simply "gating" the trail is this. A gate simply gives "actual numbers"
where the agency can know the exact numbers of vehicles in and out whereas
an "obstacle" would limit the vehicles that are doing the impact. A gate
would not limit the vehicles that are causing the impact. It would not stop
those vehicles that should not be on a 3.5++ rated trail. An obstacle
would.
My reasoning is I believe most recreationists would honor an obstacle with a
sign indicating the reason in limiting the impact to this trail. If the
"responsibility" of this trail is put to the recreationist (US) the
"ownership" / "stewardship" is on the shoulders of the recreationist
where..... hopefully........ honor and respect begins to build. It may
well be that down the line we may have to gate this trail as well due to
seasonal closures that might be needed but I still feel (or hope) my fellow
recreationist would honor a sign asking them to respect or stay out for a
specific time.
My problem is that I had a committment from the Tucson office to build the
obstacles and place signs at Jawbreaker and Martinez in lieu of
closing........... I have now found out that Brad Jones, ASA4WDC President,
has openly "vetoed" my plans and says "he will personally work with the
Tucson office to find another solution other than building an obstacle".
His alternative plan is to "build a gate". His reason is: He "feels he has
a right to traverse and see this canyon as much as anyone else". I
disagree............ he has a right IF his vehicle is equipped to do so.
Francisco Mendoza has told me he has "put the <my> plans on hold for now as
he wants to review Brads plans more because he feels Brad represents the
ASA4WDC". Meaning he has a larger supporting group than I. Is Brad
"speaking" for the ASA4WDC? What about those of you not affiliated with the
ASA4WDC?
I would appreciate your input or the decisions/thoughts of your clubs on
this issue. If the thoughts of the greater portion of the OHV community
would rather see a gate in lieu of an obstacle please let me know your vote.
Something HAS to be done or they will simply close this, and other trails,
to ALL OHV use. Trails are rated for this very reason.............. some
trails simply need lockers or special equipment to traverse without doing
unnecessary impact to the lands and resources. In replying please note
whether your vehicle has lockers or not, and if so......... what kind and
where.
Thanks for your help, Sandee

Fred, you can go to paypal.com and click send money. It will have
you sign up for an account, and then get the payment information.
Just enter tom's e-mail address, then it will be sent to him.

Also with a new account (or at least this used to be the case), the
person who referred you gets $5 for a referral fee... Refer tom's
account and you can add an extra $5 to the fund.
I think E-Bay bought Pay Pal, so I'm not sure if the $5 for free is
still in effect.

Mike,
I asked for people who wish to understand the differences to email me
offline... which quite a few did, and I provided them a writeup and the
description of an experiment that they can run themselves if they wish to
test whether or not what I say is true.
While I could spend hundreds of hours explaining to you the material
property differences and we could discuss the required nth order non-linear
differential equations and deformable solids theory with the requisite
materials science thrown in... I won't because it would be a waste of my
time and wouldn't change your mind.
If you are enamoured with your aluminum tierod... keep it and enjoy.
If you are protecting whoever makes these things... I respect your honorable
intentions but I find them misguided.
If you are attempting to create a public debate with me on this issue... I
must request of you what I requested of others... and write me off list.
If you are truely interested in understanding the differences and would like
me to present you with a little experiment which will show you the
differences... write me offline and I will send it to you offline. Take a
few minutes and do the experiment yourself and then come back to me with the
results... then tell me what you think of the use of aluminum or an aluminum
alloy as a tierod.
Kind Regards,
Joe West

OK all........
I have received several comments re the "obstacle vs. a controlled gate"
wherein they feel there are large numbers of our fellow 4-wheelers that
would NOT respect a sign or obstacle/gate................ It is felt the
"rock stacking, entry, and by-passes will continue" as well as any
informative signs will "be shot at".
Is it felt there are large numbers out there that will continue with ways to
4-wheel without caring of permanently losing trails? Is there that much
"lack of honor" out there?
Is our problem a "blatant disrespect of our lands and resources" or is it
simply "being thoughtless" or "uneducated"??

Subject: Aluminum Alloy Tie Rods-calling BS.
Yesterday Sharky claimed that it was a 1 in a million shot breaking
that tie rod. Sorry, gonna hafta call BS. I was on Skull Crusher
that day. I could duplicate that break again with ANY Tj with that
steering on it. A steel tierod in that same situation NEVER would
have fractured like that.
I've seen several of the smaller diameter (1") aluminum tie rods on
the trail and they all seem to change toe as the vehicle drives
through the rocks. However, I've also seen alot of guys running the
1.5" aluminum tie rods and they don't seem to change toe from just
driving through the rocks. I'm no metallurgist, but the 50% increase
in size is pretty significant so possibly that would take care of
some of the fracture issues.
I personally wouldn't run an aluminum tie rod for numerous
performance reasons. Whether or not they are safe is another
question entirely, but it seems to me that repeatedly bending steel
or aluminum will eventually lead to it breaking.
2 cents,

I just wanted to let all of you know that my Jeep is fixed. As I posted after the CK run I could feel a grind and vibration in the rearend after the run.... Well, Julio called me a few minutes ago and let me know that the completely rebuilt the rearend. I had trashed the RP... How I did it I don't know but I did. While it was in the shop they replaced my radiator and thermostat because I had mentioned it was running warm on the trail. I thought that they might say the radiator needed serviced or something. Subject: Re: Jawbreaker
Hi Sandee. I assume from your post that Brad has a rig that
would generally be considered under-equipped for Jawbreaker.
If that is a correct assumption, then I agree with you and
disagree with him.
In general, I like the idea of a representative obstacle
(even if it will itself get stacked with rocks) along with
an appropriate sign. But I don't think that is enough.
I'd also like to see signs marking those parts of the trail
that are sensitive and are to be avoided. My Jeep is set
up well enough to run Jawbreaker and I have, in fact, run
Jawbreaker 2 or 3 times without - I think - damaging the
trail. But, other than the one tree with exposed roots in
the middle of the trail, I don't know where the sensitive
areas are. I'd like to see additional signs marking the
areas to avoid.
My Jeep has lockers at both ends: a Detroit in the rear
and a Lockright in the front. I also run 35" tires and
have the lift to go with them. I also run 4.56 gears
and a 4:1 so I also have the appropriate gearing. All
of these things figure into one's ability to traverse
trails without tearing them up, IMO.

Subject: RE: Speaking of York Compressors....
Rob,
Not sure of Volvo model numbers for York compressors. But on the
compressor there should be a tag on the front with the serial number and
model number. You want to find a tag that has 210 somewhere in the model
number. I think my Eaton compressor has L210 and my old one had L209 on
it for the model number. The 210 is the larger stroke compressor.
You also want to think smaller pulley is better. So if you have to
choose between two 210 compressors the one with the smaller pulley is
better.
To check the compressor the first check would be to make sure the
bearings in the pulley are good by spinning it with the belt(s) off. The
second check you could do is connect the clutch wire to +12v with the
body of the compressor grounded. You should hear a clunk, that would be
it engaging. Then you can spin the pulley which should now spin the
crank of the compressor. You could put you fingers over the input or
output to be sure there is suction and air flowing out.
Not sure if there is much more you can do without connecting it to a
motor or tearing it apart.
Good luck.

I will be looking for a york in the next couple weeks. Which is the
best volvo to look for to find one? Is there a certain model number
that is most widely used? Is there any way to test to see if it is
good (how do I keep from pulling a bad one)? Any help would be
apreciated. I know there are a few of you out there that have put
Yorks in your Jeep. I'd especially like to hear from TJ owners that

Kind Regards,
Joe West

Subject: Trail Ethics

I will be looking for a york in the next couple weeks. Which is the
best volvo to look for to find one? Is there a certain model number
that is most widely used? Is there any way to test to see if it is
good (how do I keep from pulling a bad one)? Any help would be
apreciated. I know there are a few of you out there that have put
Yorks in your Jeep. I'd especially like to hear from TJ owners that
have done it. -Rob

2 cents,
Sean

I was out there (lower Term) for a clean up (rock unstacking) and I walked
most of it. Most of the time people will have an open seat that you snag.
Here is two picks of Lower Term. Rio took the picks.

I didn't think that I would get a new one. All I can say is I am impressed with Julio and Darner. Well done!!

Good luck.

I was there picking up my two boys from the YES after school program and was in a blue '91 wrangler, you were in a tan '81 cj and asked if we were interested in a chrome front bumper. I was going to suggest this group to you since you said that you just got yours, but you seemed in a hurry so I let it go.
Today I went to pick the youngest one up and there sat your rig and it had the group stickers on both sides.
