Joe,
Thanks for the great response. I have 2 questions:
1.) Although an auto is more expensive to maintain if it breaks down,
I've read (I think on JU) that an auto can go forever with very little
maintenence (just replace the fluid) whereas with a manual we have to
replace the clutch, master cylinder, rotors, etc every few years. I've
done this 3 times with my current vehicle (160K miles on it). Is this
a reasonable description of the maintence of the two?
2.) I've read that an auto tranny is not sealed so if you go just a
littler deeper than you should in a water crossing, you can flood it.
Does the manual have the same problems?
For those of you with a manual who do a good amount of rock crawling,
how often do you need to replace the clutch?

Joe....I know you always apply the logical side to your discussions.
That being said, you have obviously driven the TJ's new 4 speed auto as you
commented how "anemic" the new auto is. Was it really as bad as the old 3
speed? I can only go on what I've read, and those articles seemed fairly
positive about the new auto.
Since I don't own an auto, my skin is far from thin concerning this topic.

Jim,
If you are like me... driving an automatic is like driving grandpa's old
Cadillac; it's fine for vehicles like my white trash Land Cruiser; but it
doesn't belong in a Jeep. The factory Wrangler, even in it's stock 4.0l
form is anemic at best... throw in an automatic and you've just made slow;
even slower.
An automatic is good going uphill because of the effective crawl ratio
increase caused by the torque converter... an automatic is bad going down
hill for exactly the same reason; the torque converter causes an effective
decrease in crawl ratio with a subsequent decrease in compression (engine)
braking.
An automatic is good for a kick-butt rock crawling rig... but how much time
are you REALLY going to spend doing ARCA runs?
An automatic is slower, less efficient, more prone to failure (in general)
because of it's complexity and more expensive to fix when it breaks.
If you are planning on doing most of your driving on the road... if you like
shifting and want as much performance as you can get; stick with the manual
transmission. I know people who have switched automatics for manuals and
they loved the manual... I know people who have switched their manuals for
an automatic and they loved the automatic.... stick with what you enjoy and
if you are on the fence about which one to get; take a test drive... one
drive in the anemic automatic compared to the manual transmission and you'll
order the manual guaranteed.
When I want comfort... I take my Land Cruiser and enjoy the relaxing comfort
of letting the transmission do the shifting for me.... for a Jeep Wrangler;
stick with the manual and you won't regret it.
For those of you with thin skin who are offended by what I write because you
own an automatic and you LOVE it:
The above message was just my opinion, nothing more... and nothing less.
Kind Regards,
Joe West

Wow and I thought we were talking about trannies, not brakes...hhmm. Anyway
I know I use my brakes much less then a similar Jeep equiped with an auto.
BTW I have a manual. I think it all boils down to what you like, I like my
manual and have wheeled with Jeeps that have autos. I'll stick with my
manual for the terrain I like to run. The original poster should just go
down to the dealer and test drive a 2003 with a manual and one with an auto.
Buy the one they like. This brings up a question that I have. I've never
found this out for sure but do all 2003's have 4 speed autos or just the
Rubi?

All of them. I looked at a 3002 X at Pitrie the other day and it was

You're right in that I should buy what *I* prefer and that would be
a manual, but everyone around me says auto. My only concern is that
I'll get a manual and be unable to "play" with the big boys at some
point. I should have mentioned this will be my daily driver but then
again, so is my current truck which is manual. Been driving it 11
years and the only time I wish I had an auto was when I was trying
to shift and eat ice cream :-)
My fear of test driving is that these slimey sales guys always try
to make you feel bad after the test drive when you say you're just
looking. I did read on RockCrawler.com that they preferred the
manual to the auto but it seemd to be only for the autos lack of
compression braking.

If you really want to have fun with the salesman, type up a 10 question
multiple choice test on a sheet of paper. When you hit the lot and the
salesman approaches you, provide him with the test and inform him that he
must achieve a score of XX% (your choice here) on the test before you will
allow him to "service" you. You can explain, if you are so inclined, that
you would not want to waste neither his nor your time if he didn't know the

Classic! With all the bashing we do to sales people, I wonder how
many of us really have the balls to be rude to them? The other day
at Pitrie, the guy said he just go the Rubicon pricing in that day
(when in fact it was out for 2 weeks on KBB and JeepWarehouse). I
was going to flat out call him a liar but I decided it wouldn't help
matters. He also said the new plastic around the window was
for "wind noise". Not being a TJ expert, I've read that it's really
for safety laws not wind.

Minus well chime in on this as I run a manual and like it, I run a T-18 with
the granny low first gear so that helps in the liking department. The
Scrambler (manual) is primarily my dads Jeep and it does great on the rocks.
However I will be building a CJ-6 soon and I have elected to go with a Turbo
400 auto instead of a manual because it is nice on the rocks, and for those
who challenge just how much time you really spend on the rocks, Its all in
the trails you pick. personally Id say for the local and the majority of the
people in the clubs liking the rocky terrain around here go with the auto.

Stu,
JeepWarehouse lists the Sahara and Sport as having front discs and

Might be, with all the lightweight stuff now on the underside and
the top heavy cage, hey Sharky you might want to have Joe do a study
on your weight distribution in your Jeep...
For the most part in the past I have not read much of the debate on
the Alumi-Flex and cannot speak to the quality of any not
manufactured by Troy. As for the ones Troy makes they have been
abused more than once by several people I wheel with, pushed far
more than a stocker would have ever held up under.
As for Joe's comment about the one Sharky broke, yes he broke one of
the first models that were designed and it was an extreme
situation. Troy who stands behind his work, went back did a re-
design to make it stronger. I believe under normal off roading his
original design would have worked just fine and even held up under
some extreme conditions. I am not sure how many non-alumi flex ones
would have held up with the way Sharky broke his, so I doubt it was
a bad product, but the fact that even a freak breakage occured and
tha manufacturer went back to the table and made it even stronger,
and to date none I know of that were made by Toys by Troy(updated
one) has been broken I think is a much better gauge than talking
about something someone thinks might happen on paper. Granted
formula's, etc... go to prove structural integrity(ouch that one
hurt), but how many times has what was on paper not been the truth.
Look at all the earth quakes that collapsed buildings that were
built based on paper and ink to withstand it and they fell.
Troy stands behind what he builds and from first hand experience
wheeling with owners of this product and seeing it work I have to
say there should be no worries about using it.
I would worry more about a Jeep lifted on 38's, hard top with a roof
rack on it full of equipment that is not running full width axles
tipping over more than I would the alumiflex failing...<grin>
PS Our group is known for breaking things, if we can't break it than
it must be good :o)~

However I have seen some newer Jeeps there (XJ, ZJ)

Yeah I hear ya with that one. First a little background.... I've been
trying to get my wife out of here P.O.S. VW Jetta TDI for about a year now.
The thing she likes most about it is the diesel engine. I thought I finaly
had a chance when I found out that the 2003 Libertys might have a Diesel.
Well me and the wife recently went down to a Jeep dealer here in ABQ just to
look at the new 2003's Wranglers. When I was done looking I suggested that
she look at the Liby's so she could tell if she liked the vehicle at all.
While we were looking a salesman asked us if we needed any help. She said
she was looking at the Liby's so if they came out with a diesel engine she
would know if she wanted one or not. Without even thinking it over for a
second he blurts out no way, a diesel wouldn't fit. Then he went on to say
that in 1993 Jeep tried to put a diesel in the Cherokees but with no
success. This guy was an idiot and we knew it because we have done our
research. Just when I was about to bring up that in every other country but
this one the Cherokee's (liberty here) run 2.5 CDR engines I thought better
of it and would rather not get into an argument because we had no plans to
buy then anyway. I just know what dealer we will NOT be going back to.
Heck we do all our vehicle purchases through a friend that gives us fleet
prices in Phoenix anyway.

Joe,
Thanks for the great response.

Jim,
If you are like me... driving an automatic is like driving grandpa's old
Cadillac; it's fine for vehicles like my white trash Land Cruiser; but it
doesn't belong in a Jeep. The factory Wrangler, even in it's stock 4.0l
form is anemic at best... throw in an automatic and you've just made slow;
even slower.
I take my Land Cruiser and enjoy the relaxing comfort
of letting the transmission do the shifting for me.... for a Jeep Wrangler;
stick with the manual and you won't regret it.
For those of you with thin skin who are offended by what I write because you
own an automatic and you LOVE it:
The above message was just my opinion, nothing more... and nothing less.
Kind Regards,
Joe West

BTW I have a manual. I think it all boils down to what you like, I like my
manual and have wheeled with Jeeps that have autos. I'll stick with my
manual for the terrain I like to run. The original poster should just go
down to the dealer and test drive a 2003 with a manual and one with an auto.

You can explain, if you are so inclined, that
you would not want to waste neither his nor your time if he didn't know the
details about the vehicle you are interested in.

again, so is my current truck which is manual.

It makes everything too top heavy. He needs to add some weight down there.
The aluminum is throwing it off.

Stu,
JeepWarehouse lists the Sahara and Sport as having front discs and
rear drums. I guess it is only for the Rubi, as is the 16" wheels
and 31" tires.
http://www.jeepwarehouse.com/StdOpt.asp?
Model=2966&Name=2003+Jeep+Wrangler+Sahara
BTW.. .with the 16" wheels, what's the largest tire I can expect to
fit on those?

Subject: Re: alumi-flex tierods for $89 new
Might be, with all the lightweight stuff now on the underside and
the top heavy cage, hey Sharky you might want to have Joe do a study
on your weight distribution in your Jeep...

U-Pull it auto parts down on Broadway has been great for me, I've found
pretty much everything I've looked for but then I have a CJ and am not
looking for JEEP parts, but rather any part that will work.
However I have seen some newer Jeeps there (XJ, ZJ)
You have to go through the trouble of picking the vehicle apart but they
have always been up front about everything and their prices are usually the
cheapest I've seen
