Anyone know about how much a Klune-V "David" costs? I am
dreaming about moving the little four-popper forward to accomodate a
crawler (someday) and was just wondering about cost for the box.
Can't seem to find pricing on the web, but maybe I just looked in all
the wrong places.

Subject: Roofing BBQ/Party
Hey friends, I'm replacing my roof this weekend and inviting all my fellow jeepers/club members over to help eat the food that's going to be barbecued for all the people who help with my weekend project. I guess what I'm asking is if anyone wants to help out.
Well, people, there's the map if anyone would like to help. I'm going to be doing the stripping of the roof so nobody has to do that. Saturday I need help with putting the materials on the roof, removing and replacing plywood. Sunday I'll be shingling the roof and that'll be it. I'm really just asking for help on Saturday, if you would like to help on Sunday, c-mon over. hope to see ya there.
TIA

Subject: Rubicon - Auto or Manual?
Hi Folks,
I realize this topic has been beaten to death in this and other
forums. I'm not looking for what is the best tranny, but for those
of us in AZ, I was wondering what the most common tranny is? Do the
majority of you use the manual or auto? I ordered a Rubicon
primarily because (after exhaustive reading) it seems that the auto
is preferred for rock crawling. Since this will be my first
Wrangler, I would like to do some rock crawling but I'm not sure how
I will like it. I currently drive a 5 speed Mazda P/U and I love the
manual tranny and I wouldn't mind having it on the Jeep, but from
experience I am under the impression that it may be more difficult
to rock craw with one, especially if you need to stop and go, stop
and go. Other than that, it seems the manual is pretty much equal to
the auto in abilities.
Sorry for the winded post and I'm not trying to start a flame. I'm
just curious what the breakdown is among you VJCers.
Thanks for reading!

Jim,
Doing a tranny swap in a TJ is not a minor task. Because of that, I
think most folks pretty much don't talk about it because there aren't
that many that want to spend the money on it.
If you are serious about the rocks, and you drive a 5 speed, you either
learn how to manage it or you burn up your clutch. Some people get the
hang of it, some don't (just like anything else in life).
With the new 4 speed coming out for '03, that will be a big plus for the
TJ. The old 3 speed auto left something to be desired due to having no
overdrive gear. I hope to be able to drive one of the new autos (now if
I can find someone crazy enough to let me behind the wheel!) :)

make the ride on Saturday morning to Prescott Granite Basin. For anyone
that showed up to the AG parking lot looking for us, we do apologize....
Saturday morning around 5:30am we received that call that we all prey we
never get..... My nephews a friend of theirs and their father (my sisters
husband) were on their way to a camping trip when they were hit head on by a
drunk driver. My youngest nephew had to be extricated from the vehicle and
all parties were transported to JC Lincoln as level 1 & 2 traumas.... Very
scary...
Anyway, it appears that the drunk driver got the worst of it and is still in
the hospital (no seat belt).. As for my family they have lots of stitches,
bruises, and literally feel like they have been hit by a car, but they will
survive.

Subject: RE: Rubicon - Auto or Manual?
Jim,
If you are like me... driving an automatic is like driving grandpa's old
Cadillac; it's fine for vehicles like my white trash Land Cruiser; but it
doesn't belong in a Jeep. The factory Wrangler, even in it's stock 4.0l
form is anemic at best... throw in an automatic and you've just made slow;
even slower.
An automatic is good going uphill because of the effective crawl ratio
increase caused by the torque converter... an automatic is bad going down
hill for exactly the same reason; the torque converter causes an effective
decrease in crawl ratio with a subsequent decrease in compression (engine)
braking.
An automatic is good for a kick-butt rock crawling rig... but how much time
are you REALLY going to spend doing ARCA runs?
An automatic is slower, less efficient, more prone to failure (in general)
because of it's complexity and more expensive to fix when it breaks.
If you are planning on doing most of your driving on the road... if you like
shifting and want as much performance as you can get; stick with the manual
transmission. I know people who have switched automatics for manuals and
they loved the manual... I know people who have switched their manuals for
an automatic and they loved the automatic.... stick with what you enjoy and
if you are on the fence about which one to get; take a test drive... one
drive in the anemic automatic compared to the manual transmission and you'll
order the manual guaranteed.
When I want comfort... I take my Land Cruiser and enjoy the relaxing comfort
of letting the transmission do the shifting for me.... for a Jeep Wrangler;
stick with the manual and you won't regret it.
For those of you with thin skin who are offended by what I write because you
own an automatic and you LOVE it:
The above message was just my opinion, nothing more... and nothing less.
Kind Regards,
Joe West

Are they still selling Alumi-Fracture tierods? Sheesh... I would have thought someone would have died by now and they would have had their butts sued...
For those of you who don't know better... skip the aluminum tierod; it is sure to go the way of the dinosaur, the AMC Gremlin, the Corvair (ouch :) ) and split-fire sparkplugs. From an engineering standpoint; it is an incredibly bad idea... those who are currently stuck with them should sell them for scrap aluminum and write the money off to experience... those who are not stuck with them should make sure they remain that way. If you're interested in the exact reasons why they are a bad idea, shoot me an email offline... I'm sure most people who've been on the list for awhile know why I think that the Alumi-Fracture tierod is a dangerous idea.

Stu,
Thanks for your comments. That's one more thing I wanted to ask. How
many people with manuals wish they had autos and vice versa? You
don't see too many people talking about this.

Jim,
I agree with Scott and Joe that a manual trans is better for a Wrangler.
Add a hand throtle and you can use the clutch and brake to makes things
smoother when crawling and forget about the gas pedal.

You keep talking about hese things...Im still running the Alumi-Flex and
have even gone to the complete steering system. I love the thing, and Ive
been using the Alumi-flex for a few years now and Im still here. Instead of
telling everyone else your opinion about it and what trash it is, why not
discuss your concerns with Troy from Toys by Troy and get all of the info
about it first. Every time they mention the Alumi-Flex you go off on this
same old bash. There are some immitations out there that have had problems
but I know for a fact that when Troy had a concern about a possible problem
he revamped the thing. At least give him the courtesy of defending the
product. Geeze Joe be fair :)

Jim,
When I got my TJ, I hadn't driven a stick in quite a while. My concern was
the fact that I have a bad/weak left angle due to an accident. I love the 5
speed now. It's kind of weird when I get in my wife's XJ with an auto. Now
since you are talking about the Rubicon and it would come with a 4 speed
auto, that I would probably go with the auto. But with the manual I like
the compression braking you get. I don't get that with my wife's XJ. In
traffic, it is nice to know that if you let off the gas, you will get some
engine braking but a TJ with a 4 speed auto. Hmmm.

In my house we have a 2000 TJ with a manual and 2002 with an auto. I find
the automatic to have just as much get up and go as my manual 2000. The 2000
is running 37's and the 20002 is running 30's. Geared correctly I don't
think the auto is slow at all. I agree with Joe about handling steep
descents. I would always prefer my manual in that situation, however driving
evry day around town I think the automatic is the way to go.

Anyone know about how much a Klune-V "David" costs? I am

Can't seem to find pricing on the web, but maybe I just looked in all

Stu,
Thanks for your comments. That's one more thing I wanted to ask. How
many people with manuals wish they had autos and vice versa? You
don't see too many people talking about this.
Thanks again everyone!

Attached is a photo that will pretty much explain why Kevin and I did not
make the ride on Saturday morning to Prescott Granite Basin. For anyone
that showed up to the AG parking lot looking for us, we do apologize....

The factory Wrangler, even in it's stock 4.0l
form is anemic at best... throw in an automatic and you've just made slow;
even slower.
I take my Land Cruiser and enjoy the relaxing comfort
of letting the transmission do the shifting for me.... for a Jeep Wrangler;
stick with the manual and you won't regret it.

Jim,
I agree with Scott and Joe that a manual trans is better for a Wrangler.

Hmmm.

Subject: Auto vs Manual
In my house we have a 2000 TJ with a manual and 2002 with an auto. I find
the automatic to have just as much get up and go as my manual 2000. The 2000
is running 37's and the 20002 is running 30's. Geared correctly I don't
think the auto is slow at all. I agree with Joe about handling steep
descents. I would always prefer my manual in that situation, however driving
evry day around town I think the automatic is the way to go.
