Subject: RE: K&N Filter question
The thing with K&N filters is that they are washable.
With the paper filter's when they get dirty, you get a new one and throw the
old one away.
When the K&N filter needs cleaned, you wash it, re-apply the oil and put it
back on.
Also K&N's are designed to run dirty. I don't know how to explain it, but
essentially a K&N filter will filter better when it is dirty than when it is
fresh. I believe under these conditions K&N's filter better than paper and
definitely flow better than paper.
Most people that have never used a K&N filter before, clean them to often:
"The general rule of thumb is that the filter needs to be cleaned when the
dirt build up gets as thick as the wire mesh. The usual interval is 30,000 -
50,000 miles depending on driving conditions. We recommend that you check
your filter about once a year in normal usage." - K&N Website.

Stu,
Right on. I am always looking for cost effective mods.
One thing I would like is an easier way to clean the air filter. And if
for 50 cents to do a disposable filter would be great. I like to clean
my filter after every dusty run. What I am doing now is just using
compressed air to blow out the dirt from the Fram filter. I do that
about five or six times then replace it. So every six to eight weeks I
am buying a new filter. They are presently less then ten bucks so it's
not like I am breaking the bank. I figure if I do the Stu method and
spend 50 cents instead of blowing out the filter I would spend about
three bucks every six to eight weeks.

All true Joey....except for the fact that it costs me $.50 to "change"
my filter. I originally bought my K&N because when I bought my TJ,
Delco and Fram filters were selling for $35 at AutoZone and PepBoys. I
did not buy it to improve my performance....it was a simple matter of
economics. I never could tell the difference between the OEM filter and
a K&N (with or without the pre-charger).
I am just happy that it saves me money.

I have noticed that for the K&N to allow for the increased air flow it
has larger pores. Larger pores equal larger particulates entering the
engine. I have heard people talking about using vacuum bags or the like
to help the filter but then you are back to the same as a regular Fram
filter. Joey K 93YJ

I run the K&N filter in my jeep and my toyota work truck. The
performance gains are, IMO, minimal (every little bit helps, though).
The best thing about the K&N is how long they last. The same filter now
in my 98 Toyota was also in my 94 Toy and in my 89 Toyota 4x4. This
filter now has about 240,000 miles on it. It cleans up good as new
every time I clean it. Just re-oil it and go.
With most air filters running 10-20 bucks, it will pay for itself in no
time, especially if you spend a lot of time offroad.

Here's what it is. If you look at the back of the radiator coolant overflow
bottle, there is a tube molded in. This is there to vent the overflow
bottle. Unfortunately, when bouncing around during wheeling, the fluid finds
its way out this went and on to the radiator fan which immediately shoots it
up to the hood. Then that fluid gets the dust in it and you have what looks
like mud.
How do I know? After changing one of my coolant system parts, I cleaned that
gunk out from under the hood. After that, I went on a trail ride that had no
mud or water, just dust. Midway through, I smelled a faint odor of coolant
so I popped the hood. There was the gunk again and some was a little green.
I looked for a leak and found none. That's when I noticed the vent.

It makes total sense, since there was NO WATER on the Crown King run.
So I'm going to put a piece of soft hose (since It's an oval) on the vent and direct it somewhere else.

Subject: Latest mods completed/tested
Hi all: I don't post as much anymore, but I wanted to let anyone who
was interested know that I finally completed my latest large round of
mods to my rockcrawler YJ. Quickly:
-- Dana 60 rear, spool, 5.13 gears, double-sheared traction bar
-- Dana 60 front, Detroit, 5.13 gears, custom arms with tie rod behind
axle. 1-ton TREs. Ground brakes to fit 15-inch wheels. Axle shortened
to 66 inches.
-- 38.5 x14.50 SX
-- Beard seats built into cage
-- Waggoneer springs for extended wheelbase
Most of the credit goes to my friend Blake Van de Loo, who
masterminded the entire thing and did nearly all the fabrication. Have
had it out on two test runs and it works like a champ. The steering is
particularly trick and I've got half a steering arm with nothing on
it, waiting to plumb a ram assist. The best part? With 5 pounds of
air, I can just fit in the garage. The outside track width is just 80
inches, so it fits on the trails and on my trailer, which is nice.
Also, I recently moved to Gilbert (Val Vista and Elliot), so if you
see an OD green YJ creeping around, stop and say hi.

Not sure about the cross shaft but it couldn't hurt.
Diff gasket not needed.
Crowbar to pull pry the carrier out.
About the C clips I don't know. I would think not if you don't have the
disconnect. (no axel disconnect = no c clip I think)
If the washers are really warn maybe. Otherwise I advise against it.
Lock tight and a torque wrench.

Oh and there are no c-clips and you may not evenhave to pull the

I know many people that didnt use them and have no prolems.
