Subject: Thanks for the bailout on the CK run (our first)

Special thanks to Mike Buckner for being "Tail End Charlie" for the group.
He spotted my flat tire BEFORE we'd trashed the rim.
Thanks for the CO2 to get us to the flat spot to change the tire.

Thanks to Alvin Kosar With Bonnie and the kids for picking a good spot and jacking the JEEP and telling me "JEEP, Just Empty Every
Pocket!"

And again to Mike for changing the tire.

Thanks to Leonard Pennock as Doppelganger to Len Sullivan.

I know other people helped so if I missed you please let me know.

Anyway we're down 2 tires, a scraped and slightly smashed fuel tank and steering box, I think I may have done the step in 3rd. It
least it seems to me I did. It certainly didn't seem very graceful.

I'm getting an accumulation of mud on the underside of the hood of the TJ
It's on the drivers side. It seems to hit there with some force and then spatter radially all over the engine from there. It's a
reoccurring problem. There is a factory hole in the body above where the shock bolt is. Should there be a plug or something there?
It seems to be coming through there but the shock doesn't have mud.

Subject: Interesting Rick Beer story

Ok, so I puncture one of my 35" MTR's on the Turky Creek run on Saturday.
From the looks of the hole as well as its location, I'm confident that the tire will
need to be replaced. No problem - I got them at Discount Tire and have the
road hazard warranty. After spending some time in CK socializing and grabbing
some lunch, I head home. All the way home I'm thinking about which Discount
Tire store to go to. I know that the 35" MTR's are not always in stock at every
store. I decide to go to the store at 43rd Ave and Bell but when I get there, it
turns out that the power is out in that part of town and they're referring customers
to other stores. So I go to the new store at 59th Ave and the 101. They don't
have any 35" MTR's in stock. But they tell me the store at Arrowhead mall does.
In fact, they have 14 in stock! I should have known. That's the store that Rick
Beer was at prior to his being loaned to the store he's currently at. I'm thinking
that having 14 MTR's in stock at the Arrowhead store was likely Rick's doing.
So, even though he wasn't at that store, it appears his having been there created
the right conditions that I was still able to go there and get my tire replaced.
Thanks Rick! You're the man.

Also, I'd like to tell Rick that I'm glad to hear you and your passengers are relatively
ok. If you need help with anything, don't hesitate to ask - especially when you build
up a new rig.

And some of you are great shudder bugs and have pictures of other jeeps I have worked on. Doesnt matter if it was a rollcage or bracket. The only thing is I need it JPEG format and in preferable 480-600 pix size that would be great. The pictures will be posted for the all world to see on my web page in my "Products section." All pic should be posted my the end of the week. If I can get a couple , it would mean alot to me.

For me the spring compressor was way more trouble then what it's
worth. You can get the springs in using a long prybar and someone to
kick the spring in to place. After you disco the swaybar, shocks,
trackbar and pitman arm, pull the old spring out and set the new one
up in the top over your bumpstop. Put the bottom of the spring in
the "pocket" between your disk brakes and the spring perch. Slide
the crowbar in under the spring and across the axel. Lift the
spring, and when you get it up to the spring perch yell kick... and
have someone kick it in to place. It will pop right in. I've done it
with up to 5.5" springs with the spacers on top and it is just as
easy as with the 3" springs. -Rob

Subject: RE: K&N Filter question

I run the K&N filter in my jeep and my toyota work truck. The performance
gains are, IMO, minimal (every little bit helps, though).
The best thing about the K&N is how long they last. The same filter now in
my 98 Toyota was also in my 94 Toy and in my 89 Toyota 4x4. This filter now
has about 240,000 miles on it. It cleans up good as new every time I clean
it. Just re-oil it and go.

With most air filters running 10-20 bucks, it will pay for itself in no
time, especially if you spend a lot of time offroad.

Just don't forget to use a pre-charger (pre-filter) on the K&N filters.
In our extremely dusty environment, they do let the very fine dust
through. I've verified it on my K&N. Details are on my web site for a
cheap and effective pre-charger. (about $.50)

I have noticed that for the K&N to allow for the increased air flow it
has larger pores. Larger pores equal larger particulates entering the
engine. I have heard people talking about using vacuum bags or the like
to help the filter but then you are back to the same as a regular Fram
filter.

Subject: [az_vjc] K&N Filter question

I'm looking at getting a K&N filter for my ZJ (V8), does it really make
a difference in performance/mileage?. All comments/suggestions are
appreciated. - Jose

All true Joey....except for the fact that it costs me $.50 to "change"
my filter. I originally bought my K&N because when I bought my TJ,
Delco and Fram filters were selling for $35 at AutoZone and PepBoys. I
did not buy it to improve my performance....it was a simple matter of
economics. I never could tell the difference between the OEM filter and
a K&N (with or without the pre-charger).

I am just happy that it saves me money.

I have noticed that for the K&N to allow for the increased air flow it
has larger pores. Larger pores equal larger particulates entering the
engine. I have heard people talking about using vacuum bags or the like
to help the filter but then you are back to the same as a regular Fram
filter.

I run the K&N filter in my jeep and my toyota work truck. The
performance gains are, IMO, minimal (every little bit helps, though).
The best thing about the K&N is how long they last. The same filter now
in my 98 Toyota was also in my 94 Toy and in my 89 Toyota 4x4. This
filter now has about 240,000 miles on it. It cleans up good as new
every time I clean it. Just re-oil it and go.

With most air filters running 10-20 bucks, it will pay for itself in no
time, especially if you spend a lot of time offroad.
