On his way to the CK run today, Rick Beers was in a head on accident. A
drunk driver came into his lane and hit them head on. Everyone is ok
other than the normal bruises and pains from an accident of this
magnitude. The Jeep is totaled and they had to cut his son out of the
passenger seat as the majority of the impact was to the passenger side.
Rick is extemely lucky that it was not worse than it was.

Subject: Re: [Tech] 2000 TJ - Replacing factory gearing
I would go to 4.56 for your 33s or 4.88 if you plan on going with
taller tires in the future. For the 4.56 you are looking at about
$400 for the gears and then another $300 or more to have them
installed. The only way you can install your gears is if you have
all the equipment to do it (meaning the guages and stuff to set the
pinion depth and blacklashing and stuff). If you can't get the
equipment you will need to have them installed. 4.88s are about a
hundred bucks more. Some people think at 4.88 the pinion is too
small, but the guys I know that run them have no problems at all. If
you don't know what you are doing, or have friends that know how to
do it then let someone install it for you!!! Gears aren't easy to
set up if you've never done it before!! Randy Siade in the club has
the cheapest labor rates for a gear install that I saw when asking
around about my gears, but I have friends that hooked me up, so I
did them myself. I went to 4.88s.... All my opinion... -Rob

Subject: AX-15 problems on my 98 TJ
Hi Gang,
On my way back from a meeting with Doug Ballard today... I had an
interesting problem.
I started out in first gear as normal and when I went to shift into second,
it would not go into second for anything.
I tried to go back into first since the shift to second had taken so long
that I was plenty slow to go back into first... but it wouldn't go into
first either... so I went into third which worked. After I built up a
little speed, I tried to go into second and once again... try after try it
would not go into second. I stopped and tried to go into first and second
and finally, after playing with it for 30 seconds it went into first. I
started out and it shifted into second with some difficulty... third and
fourth are smooth.
All the way home, I could get it into first and second with some difficulty
and sometimes multiple tries... third, fourth, and fifth gear work fine.
Shifting into first and second... I can "feel" that something is wrong...
things just don't feel normal in the first and second shift. I've never had
any indication of a problem before and this problem happened virtually
instantly... one minute everything works fine and the next I can't get it
into first or second... and now first and second seem to work but roughly.
I have used Synthetic mobile 1 in the transmission since new... and I
believe that there may be a problem using Synthetic in an AX-15 because
additives may ruin the syncros... this problem feels just like a syncro
problem, but I wouldn't expect syncros to fail instantly... I would expect
that a syncro failure would be a slow degradation in shift smoothness into a
particular gear.
I'm curious if anyone has either had a similar experience or perhaps we have
some manual transmission experts who might be able to offer some thoughts as
to my problem. For now, I'll assume that I have destroyed my syncros using
synthetic transmission fluid.
Kind Regards,
Joe West

Subject: Armageddon Jeep Rescue Help
Just woke up after spending 12 hours on the trail last night.
It was fun right up until everything went to hell at once.
I didn't have a spare shakle hanger or front leaf spring so my Jeep
is still out there sitting in a big hole a few obsticals past the
chute. Oh ya, the front driveshaft broke too, That was no problem but
pointless to fix at midnight when we couldn't move the jeep.
Anyway, Dan C. & I are going back out in the morning (Sunday). We
have the parts, tools & the ability to make the repairs but, another
Jeep or 2 to accompany us out the would be great. We managed to get
out last night in one Jeep but it was close, we almost wound up
walking out leaving both jeeps on the trail.(long story but, actually
humerous now that we're home)
We're meeting @ my house (61st & Shea) @ 6am to load up & should be
to the air down spot by 7:30 at the latest.
If anyone with a capable vehicle would be willing to brave the heat &
give us a hand we will be forever in your debt. (I've got a machine
shop, custom parts maybe :o) With a couple of people the repairs
should go reasonably fast & then we'll backtrack out.
If your interested send me an e-mail @ Dan@s... or my
cell is 602-568-4333 & we'll wait for you or meet you somewhere.
Thanks in advance

Rick has supported our club and it's members, often at times going beyond

Joe, the use of synthetic, in itself, won't damage anything in the tranny,
no more than running dino juice. This is assuming that you are running a
GL-3 or GL-4 rated synthetic. A GL-5 rated synthetic will cause the same
damage as a GL-5 dino juice lube will. The people at Redline can fill you in
on exactly whats needed for the '98 AX-15 (and I believe '97. I think the DC
fixed the problem with the syncros in '99 or '00 for sure). I can't remember
for sure, but way back in a near dead brain cell, is a dusty sign that I
think says that Mobil 1 is a GL-5.
It's interesting that it happened so sudden, if in fact it is the syncros.
They normally will just wear abnormally fast, with the wrong lube, and
you'll know that they are going, as you'll start getting a lot of grinding,
going into gear, that gets worse as time goes on.
Anyway, I truely sorry to hear of your problem. Let me know when/if you find
out what it is for sure.
Bad timing, to try and push something, but, depending on the cost to repair
yours, keep in mind that I do have a AX-15 out of my '98 TJ that's available
for a small handful of loose coins ;)
Best,
Fred

The Mobile 1 synthetic I am using is GL-5 rated. The owner's manual for my
TJ says to use GL-5 lubricant so if indeed my syncros are shot, I'll be
headed off to Darner Chrysler next week to protest. If DC doesn't want to

The owner's manual for my

headed off to Darner Chrysler next week to protest. If DC doesn't want to

Hey Rick, if you read this message, I hope you and your son and whatever other passengers you had are well. I just got back from CK and read the post and it just pissed me off. Take that SOB for all/everything he or she owns, they don't deserve to have anything in their life, needless to say have a life. I'm sure this was already posted, but if you need help with anything fell free to let me know. take care buddy!
