Subject: Trail ratings...
I never wanted to enter this discussion, but I decided to add
something...
Anyone who is familiar with the hiking/technical rock climbing
rating system knows that the 1-5 designation works VERY well. 1 is
easy walking on flat, level ground, etc. Now vertical rock, on the
other hand, is rated entirely differently in that there are several
sub-categories. A "5" designates the use of protection, ie, ropes,
tri-cams, 'biners, harness, blah, blah blah. A 5.1 is not as hard as
a 5.2 or a 5.3, up to a 5.8, which most any healthy person can
climb. Once you get above 5.9 or 5.10, things get very difficult.
There are 5.13+, and 5.12-, etc etc etc... My point is that the
rating is arbitrary. We could call an easy trail an "A" and a hard
trail an "X". What we call them does NOT matter, as long as they are
rated accurately and consistantly.
Who is going to be the yardstick? Who determines right from
wrong, good from bad. It is all subjective, but the group agrees
that there needs to be some form of measurement. Why not make use of
a system that keeps the 1-5, but adds Mike Chatfield's use of A. B.
and C., something like a 4A would be a trail that requires 35s,
lockers, and good skills. A 4B adds a winch, and a 4C scratches and
dents. Any thoughts?

Subject: [TR] Crown King from Lake Pleasant - Saturday, August 17, 2002 - Reminder
Hello All,
Scott Kruize is leading a Crown King from Lake Pleasant trail run on Saturday, August 17, 2002.
When: High Noon.
Where: Meet at the end of Castle hot springs road where it changes to dirt
Rating: 3.0-
Length:
CB Channel: 4
Once again I will be leading the late run for those of us that still want to sleep in. Just like last year I'm sure we'll still find Hackle hanging out at the bar when we get there. ;D
This is an easy trip. I'm happy to take anybody in my group as long as they got a Jeep. As usual the minimum requirement for any run with me is that you have some tow hooks bolted on the front end! If you don't have them get some before this run! Most likely you won't need them on this trail unless you have a mechanical problem. In the last couple years I've had to tow 2 vehicles from the stair step to CK and neither had hooks. Both times my strap was broken due to the crummy means of attachment to these vehicles. I hate to sound like a prick but if you don't have tow hooks and a strap you have no business being out there. Right Stu? ;)
BTW, I'm much friendlier in person. Come on out and have some fun. :D
The Lake Pleasang to Crown King trail is a local favorite. On any given weekend, there will be numerous groups of four wheelers, ATV's and motorcycles heading to and from Crown King. It is a fun and scenic trail into the cooler pines of the Bradshaws. This trail was the first trip ever done by AzVJC.
The trail takes off from the Castle Hotsprings Rd and travels through the foot hills and up the side of the mountain, giving nice views of Lake Pleasant and the Valley. There are some tougher optional sections that can make it interesting.
The trail goes through the old ghost towns of Fort Misery and Oro Belle, both of which are remnants of the Mining era of the Bradshaw Mountains. All that remains now, are foundations and a few crumbling walls. Fort Misery makes a nice place to stop and eat lunch as the small creek usually has running water and there are trees to provide shade.
In the winter months, the trail from Fort Misery through Oro Belle to Crown King will often have snow and/or ice. In the summer, an early start is necessary to stay ahead of the rising temperatures.
Once on top of the mountain, the trail runs through the cool pines and into Crown King. In Crown King there are places to eat and have a drink, and a general store that sells some excellent fudge. The old Crown King Saloon was actually built in Oro Belle, and later hauled up (many years ago) to Crown King and rebuilt. In Oro Belle, the saloon was built into the side of the hill, so the upstairs were mainly accessable from the rear of the building (at ground level). The upstairs served as a place repose for women of ill fame.
There are campgrounds on top of the mountain near Crown King for those wishing to stay overnight. The fastest way down is via the main road which leads through Cleator and toward Bumble Bee. You can split off and go through Cordes Junction, which will get you to the Freeway quicker, or keep going strait and go through the little town of Bumble Bee.
Alternatively, you can take the Senator Highway toward Prescott or Mayer, this can be a very interesting trail during snow season. If you have the time, follow Towers Mountain rd through Crown King and up to the top of Towers Mountain, there are some excellent views and you can join back up with the Senator Highway afterward.
Have fun, remember to bring water and your camera.
Enjoy, and remember to TREAD Lightly!

The auto tranny cooler, mounted in front of the radiator, is blocking too
much of the air flow to the radiator. Further, the air that makes it through
the cooler, to the radiator is already heated. He's probably going to have
to do something with the fan, to make sure that it draws enough air through
the radiator. Maybe even add an electric fan.
Best,

Subject: Jay's little $2.74 D300 mod, Thanks
Jay's little mod on the D300 works, dual sticks.
It cost me $2.74. I already had another stick (thanks Chris) and I had the
plates cut for free. I bought a $1.98 collar (5/8"dia ID x 1-1/4"dia OD) & 2
of each bolts, nuts & lock washers.
A couple of things, Jay doesn't mention in the write up that one stick will
have to be drilled (I drilled it 5/8", 9/16" with a little wobble would work
better) & the spacer size in the write up is incorrect. I still need to bend
the sticks, but I was waiting to see how my clocking of the transfer case
goes.
I also have a question about removing the interlock pills. This mod as
written on other web sites says, to remove the interlock pills to make it
work correctly. I know where the pills are, but have no idea how to remove
them or even if I need to remove them. Any help on this would be
appreciated.
Thanks, Jay for posting this. It couldn't have come at a better time for me.

Subject: BIG THANKS
I wanted to thank Benchworks, they save me today.
I have been trying to mate the J20 box to the CJ and I screwed up a bit and
ruined a couple of little parts in the J20 box that nobody sells. I had
called them from a classified (I didn't know their name at the time) in the
paper and then went to 4 Wheelers and the guys down there told me to try
them. I went down there and the guy pulled the parts from an old box and
sold them to me for $15 and then made sure I knew how to get the box back
together. He really saved me big bucks.

They sell all sorts of rebuilt steering boxes and I am sure they do other
stuff also. Cash only, lol.

BTW - I got the box working and it was well worth taking the time to mate it
up to the CJ. A much better ratio and a stronger box.

Hello guys,
Im sure that 90% or more of you are rockcrawlers, that said I think it will be a lot of help what you have to say about mud since my Jeep is set for rockcrawling only (almost?) too.
What modifications would you do in order to get your rig mud capable? Say you wanna go to LA and do some mudbogs and hit the local mud trails...
Im going to a ramsey challenge that is supposed to be 98% mud so I wanna get the CJ ready, even if that means regearing or getting a different size of tires.
Im running a 350H0, 4.11s and 38.5Sx, D60s, Atlas II and Sm420. SOA with Rancho 9012s...
Any help will be appreciated!

Well I need to re-weld my muffler back on can anyone on the westside help me out with this on Friday late afternoon or evening? Any help would be appreciated.
Also does anyone know what store Rick is at this week? I noticed this evening that I have a screw in my tire and I am going to get it taken care of before the trip, just thought I would say hi to rick while I was there!
Thanks ,

If you break during the bog race, obstacle or course youre dead, 50 points are scored and may have an hour or two till the next obstacle.
Al alum pan with 2 pins on each side wont be hard to remove. Cooling of what? Tranny and tcase?
Rad is aluminum with 2 SS bugshields up front and an aux electrical fan

What do you do for cooling? What about if something breaks? How will you remove the plate?

Wondering if a 200HP shot will help on mud?? Im in for any mod! come awn hehe

Hello guys,
Im sure that 90% or more of you are rockcrawlers, that said I think it will be a lot of help what you have to say about mud since my Jeep is set for rockcrawling only (almost?) too.

If you haven't done it yet and need a hand, let me know. I'm at 48th &

Thanks ,

Jay,
It was a 1/2" long. I used a stardard collar from Ace Hardware and
left the set screw out.
Thank again.
