View Full Version : Outer stub won't fit unit bearing ??

So after breaking the second ujoint in the last couple of months on my drivers side outer, I called AlloyUSA and they offered to send me a new outer stub. I tell them not to rush it as I wasn't able to wheel last weekend and it got here on Tuesday.

Tonight I tried to install it, but before hammering on the ujoint I decided to make sure it would fit in the unit bearing, sure enough, it doesn't fit. Count the splines, yep, both are 27 spline stubs. Old one still slides right in, new one seems to be just a bit big...................:aagh:

WTH am I missing here ? Jeep is a 2004 Rubicon, I upgraded to the AlloyUsa axles a couple of years ago............I thought the outer stubs were pretty much all the same for the 27 spline outers, even the same as a D30, though I know I told the guy it was for a Rubi...........:aagh: Their website was no help.

Man, I really need to get out this weekend, may end up putting my stock shafts in just to wheel.........

Ideas ?

it's cold.. throw em in the oven for a lil while.. loosen up the metal.. as long as the spline count is the same you should be golden..

wouldnt you want to freeze the stub shaft to make the metal molecules in the stub shaft to shrink instead of expanding it with heat? I've never done this, just seen it done on American Hotrod. lol.

also, is it that the splines themselves are too wide and uneven or don't line up with the grooves in the unit bearing... or is it really like you said, that the diameter of the stubshaft is just a little too big

Rich,
You can always throw one of my spare Alloys in there, while your waiting. Its just a trip up my way.

and one more possible solution... take the shaft to a friendly local alloyusa dealer... maybe they can exchange with you a different stub shaft to try

when parts are stuck together we sometimes heat them up to loosen them.. possible there was a manufacturing defect.. call alloy in the am and talk to Mike Lockwood..

Yea but it sounds like he can't get the stub shaft to fit into the unit bearing.

I'd measure the ID of the bearing and the OD of the stub to see how far off it is. Just remember that if you have to heat and freeze parts to install them, then it will be a HUGE PITA if you ever need to replace them out in the rocks.

I'd call Alloy like Dave suggested, and if needed borrow one of Huck's in the meantime.

I would at least make sure the parts are the same temp. Warm the bearing in the oven even to 120 degrees and maybe toss the shaft in the freezer for 30 minutes. If they don't just slide together then there is more than likely a problem with the shaft cut.

Ended up cleaning a couple of burrs off and relubing, it's in and going back together

Thanks for the suggestions.

JPCoolers are neat! I have one I won last year in Moab, and use it every trip. (Holds lots of beer for the party afterward). :sifone:
