Ok, Im working on a Mailing List application to possibly replace Yahoo Groups.
I believe I have the e-mail communication part finished, but would like some messages sent from various sources (i.e. Netscape, Lotus Notes, Macintoshs, Linux machines, Unix, etc&) Ive tested it against MS Outlook 2000 pretty extensively, but want to make sure the mail parser can handle messages from these other sources (any curve balls out there?)
Anyway Id appreciate if some of you could send some messages (Plain Text, HTML, With or Without IMAGE attachments) to:
Test@AzChatfield.net
Thanks,

True, this has been brought up before, but it can't hurt to refresh the topic and maybe figure a way to gather some momentum for change.
Although I do have a family permit, I am also guilty of taking un-permitted passengers along. I know they "need" the permit, but due to the exact circumstances you describe, getting one is either not possible at the time, or frankly, a waste of money/hastle for them.
I realize the State Dept may be extremely slow or reluctant to change but, to me, the simple solution is paystations. Just like many other state(?) parks/areas (ie. Usery Mtn, Peralta Trail), there could be a little box at each entrance with numbered envelopes for you to put your $ into and be on your way with a "day permit". This would not eliminate the annual permits, but would certainly accommodate the day/one-time visitors. I would almost guarantee that this would make more money than the current system (a requirement for STL as mentioned by Sandee). C'mon, at FJ there are already info stations at the main entrances. How hard would it be to hang another couple of boxes and order a few more envelopes from the supplier they are already dealing with????

In answer to Sandee's comment about what I thought would be a good
change to who the permit covered, I want to clarify a couple of
points. As far as the the law says[every person must have permit], if
the permit covered everyone in the vehicle they would be there on a
permitted basis. I dont think any of us, has a problem buying a
permit, the problem is that they seem to be to restrictive as to who
is covered. What a PITA it is, an out of state friend drops in on
Friday evening, you are going wheeling on Sat. and there is no way
you can get a permit for that friend to ride along. You mention to
your neighbor that you're going wheelin' and he wants to go, you have
an empty seat, but you have to tell that person no, you dont have a
permit, and there iz no time to get one. We have a member from VJC
that is going on the Crown King Anv run, he is going to taken his
elderly aunt, she will prolly never be on State Trust Land again, to
be legal she needs a peermit, come on, get real. At the very least,
there should be a way to obtain a permit on-line and pay with PaY-pAL
Or such as that. Come,on this is the 21st century,
There will surley be other views on this, lets get them out
in the open, and hammer out something that is workable for the
wheeling community, and the state land trust people. If nothing elsr,
I or someone else can get with a state legislator, and we can work on
the existing statute. I personally think the current policy is based
on someones interpation of what is written.
The state wouldn't lose much if any money, there are x amount
of vehicles, and x number of seats. What should it matter if the
other seat has your wife, girlfriend or your Granny in it?

You can contact him for prices if your interested.
There are many others that can do the same thing. But it is always
nice if they have done the exact swap you are interested in because
they have already identified the problems with the swap and know what

FYI - The altimeter on the etrex Vista is based on barometric
pressure. Great accuarcy as long as it's calibrated correctly.
My buddy got one a couple months back for his birthday and really
likes it. 8MB of memory, fast acquistion time (compared to my
discontinued Garmin GPS40 :^) ), waterproof and lightwt. Only
drawback I see is no provision for an external antenna.

Subject: RE: Re: State Trust
I can tell this subject is going to be another of those "fire issues" that won't receive true settlement but here are a few more facts to chew on.........
I believe there is a way to purchase a "vehicle" permit (or they have considered it) but even that would only be good for "traveling across" STL. If you would stop and so much as "walk" on STL EACH person would again be responsible for a permit. Another issue would be that the "vehicle permit" would be good for that particular vehicle ONLY. Your tow vehicle, motorhome or second, third or fourth 4x4 would EACH have to have a separate permit. For some this would be a savings........... for some not.
Another issue................ The State Land Department has NO ABILITY to "change the rules/laws"............. that is done by the State Legislature and that means YOU must get the ear of your representative and be able to pursue this issue through the legislature. I've been trying to "touch" on these procedures and believe me........ if you think there's alot of BS involved in the land agencies........... try politics!!!!!
RE "daily use permits" and/or "annual" permits................... Your $15.00/$20.00 is an "annual permit". I have diligently tried to get the ASLD to implement "fee areas and/or a daily permit". It is being considered but there are a number of problems with it. They can most certainly set up an "on honor fee deposit box" at the entrance to heavily used areas like FJ but what about all the others...............???? They certainly could not set up hundreds of these "fee boxes" nor could they have law enforcement to implement these plans. FJ is a very specific area............... STL's are spotted across the state........... 9.8 million acres. HOW do you set up "paystations" for all this????????????????????????????????????? SIMPLE???????????????? The land department has NO MONEY to set up automated fee stations like Forest Service. These stations cost thousands and are vandilized almost daily. ASLD has looked into these plans. Again the issue............. "where do they go" and "how do they police them".
I don't know the answer but I do know that sitting outside the situation "assuming what the State Land Dept can and cannot do" is not solving the problem. If you all have serious heartburn about $15.00/$20.00 per year for a recreational permit I might suggest you write POLITE letters to Mike Anable, ASLD Commissioner asking for "fee stations" across the state or state your solutions on "how to relagate" the existing fee structure. Please remember............. ASLD COULD CLOSE ALL STATE TRUST LANDS TO RECREATION!!!!..................... They are NOT making money from recreation.......... most specifically a $15.00/$20.00 fee. Please don't push this issue to the point we ALL lose.
Sandee

I agree. Lately, too many people are willing to jump up to condemn a company for what they "THINK" the problem is and what they "THINK" was done wrong. Then they go flaming away without first (or ever) contacting the company in question to see what the real issue is and how it can be resolved.
Remeber when my rear pinion gear grenaded? I did't go flaming the company (not any of the ones mentioned lately) that did the gears because we couldn't be sure it was their problem. I simply changed them and moved on.
In my opinion (key word here), before you go trashing a company for what you think they have done wrong, contact them FIRST to see what the real problem is and how it can be resolved. Give them a chance. Everybody makes mistakes every once in a while. If it is a good company, they will stand behind their product or service and make do their best to makes things right within reason. If you do not do this, then you have no right whatsoever to *****.
4 Wheelers Supply has been very good to a lot of us. They provide us with great service and great prices. Give them a chance to look at it to find out what was wrong before you pass judgement against them. Its only fair

Here we go again, putting the buggy before the horse. Do you know for sure what is wrong. Have you opened the cover to investigate. Are you starting a bandwagon for everyone to jump on without the proper information. This seems to be the norm for some of the people in this club, which makes me wonder why I am a member.
But then I remember, maybe I can help some people and also receive help and information at the same time.
The rear most likely would have had problems long before if there was an install error. Well within the 90 day labor warranty. It upsets me to see people jump to conclusions without knowing.
Please bring it in to us and let us look at it, we have a ton of experience, probably more than anyone in town. We have a solid reputation for having what you need and good service. So before the rest of those who read your post and jump, as some already have, go see what's wrong and get it resolved.
Bolts just don't back out after 18000 miles.

I already got it listed on my list of things to get.
The red and blue ones are pics of the 8.8 style tubular guards. He also
has the low clearance style similar to the black one pictured.
I'll have to see how much clearance I have once its installed. If I have
enough room I really like the blue cage. I think it would look pretty
good in purple :D

Yep, Ron's Custom, solid bar guard (no tubing in his product). It
even comes unpainted so you can paint it any color you wish. The
flange is 3/8" steel and if you bolt it up with some grade 8 bolts,
you will never have a problem with it.
Besides, Ron is a heck of a nice guy.

BTW - He has two guards, the extreme duty and regular duty. I got the
regular duty, there are some design "features" I felt I didn't need
that were of the extreme duty guard.

Ed,
I checked this out a while back since I am changing careers. My goal is
Mfg Eng, yeah I know it seems a little backward with the
mega-corporations taking their high volume, low quality product lines
offshore for production, but hey, you gotta do what you gotta do! The
wages seem pretty close to reality, at least for entry level positions.
I am thinking about starting a specialty (small production) foundry in
Cochise County.
I can tell you the IT wages are way over inflated in the survey. IT
wages are decreasing as the number of high school kids (with more
experience than adults with Cram School BS's) start looking for jobs to
help pay for college. Nothing wrong with this. Computers have become
mainstream and are no longer exclusive toys of engineers, computer
scientists, and mathematicians.

We had an unplanned wrenching session tonight. I had a really bad ujoint in the rear driveshaft and needed to get it replaced before Saturday. Stu O was kind enough to stop by and give me a hand with it. It was on the CV joint and a second pair of hands come in handy to keep the spring compressed while the other guy pushes the caps in. Chris B stopped by to have me check his pinion angle and had to leave before we finished. Thanks for your help Chris. We can take a look at it another night this week if you like.

Subject: Re: [Tech] 73' CJ-5 304 V8 - Mufflers
First I am assuming that you are running fenderwell exit headers. I
ran two different sets of fenderwell headers on my 79 CJ-5 304. The
first set was Headman Hedders (sic) with 1 5/8 inch primaries and 3
inch collectors. The Headman Hedders were a real POS. I did flame
tests on all of the welds on these headers brand new out of the box
and found about 5 welds that had holes in them that I had to reweld.
With these headers I first tried Headman Hedder Mufflers that were
similar to straight-through glasspacks. They were very loud and
lasted about a week before I changed to 2.25 inch center-inlet, side-
outlet turbo mufflers. They were an improvement but still pretty
loud. With both sets of these mufflers I did not run any tailpipes.
Later I changed headers to Advance Adapters (AA) fenderwell headers
with 1 5/8 inch primaries and 2.5 inch collectors. With this change
I used mufflers from Gen III Camaro. These were about the same dB as
the turbo mufflers although their frequency seemed higher - the turbo
mufflers seemed to have a lower frequency sound. Later I tried a set
of Borla turbo mufflers with the AA headers and achieved a dB that
was higher than the Camaro mufflers and about the same as the turbo
mufflers with a higher frequency sound similar to the Camaro
mufflers. With both sets of these mufflers I ran L-shaped tailpipes
that exited in front of the rear wheels.
My son ran the same Borla mufflers I did on his 304 CJ-7 with Doug
Thorley Tri-Y inside-the-frame headers and tailpipes that exited
behind the rear wheels. This setup had a significantly lower dB in
the passenger compartment than my CJ-5 did. Outside the Jeeps the dB
produced seemed about the same.
Later when I swapped to a 383 SBC I reused the Borlas. I ran stock
LT-4 cast iron manifolds and exhaust exited behind the rear wheels.
The interior sound was higher than my son's CJ-7 but exterior sound
was about the same. Later I changed to dual Random Cats and dual
DynaMax bullet race mufflers due to clearance issues with my rear 4-
link setup. This setup is significantly higher dB than the Borlas.
These are my experiences. IMO I believe that good quality turbo
mufflers with tailpipes that exit straight to the rear of the Jeep
will probably produce the lowest interior sound level. A single
exhaust will be quieter that a dual exhaust due to some exhaust pulse
frequency cancellation. Also, an H-tube (sometimes called balance
tube or X tube) will lower the sound level slightly. However, in
general IMO high performance mufflers seem to produce high sound
levels in CJ-5's.

Amen, Gary!

What kind of help are you looking for? Doing an engine swap is a BIG project. Arguably the largest project you can do on a Jeep.

I know Randy Ellis did a TJ for a customer and completed it this past
Jan. He put a Ram Jet

with 4L60E, Altas II, ft & rr 9 inch in a AVE TJ
http://www.aev-conversions.com/
You can look @ pitures @
http://www.randyellisdesign.com/products/
its the white TJ. I saw the swap right after he finished it and it
was a work of art.
You can contact him for prices if your interested.
There are many others that can do the same thing. But it is always
nice if they have done the exact swap you are interested in because
they have already identified the problems with the swap and know what
to do.

Amen, Gary!

Ed,
I checked this out a while back since I am changing careers. My goal is
Mfg Eng, yeah I know it seems a little backward with the
mega-corporations taking their high volume, low quality product lines
offshore for production, but hey, you gotta do what you gotta do! The
wages seem pretty close to reality, at least for entry level positions.

Subject: Monday night wrenching
We had an unplanned wrenching session tonight. I had a really bad ujoint in the rear driveshaft and needed to get it replaced before Saturday. Stu O was kind enough to stop by and give me a hand with it. It was on the CV joint and a second pair of hands come in handy to keep the spring compressed while the other guy pushes the caps in. Chris B stopped by to have me check his pinion angle and had to leave before we finished. Thanks for your help Chris. We can take a look at it another night this week if you like.
Thanks guys!

I disagree. The fun part is the engineering it takes to make it work and
knowing you did a great job. Paying someone to do the job for you kind
of takes the wind out of the sails.
The 4BT project officially takes wings this week!

My apoligizes to Barry and 4Wheeler. First, I , in the heat of literary excess I confused 4Wheeler with Fly-n-High. I'll go and fall under my Jeep now. Second, it was not meant to be a diagnosis of the problem, just what it said, "Here we go again". Didn't mean to be an instigator.

Regular muflers don't have packing, as a rule, to blow out. They use a baffle arrangement of reverse flow to attenuate the noise. I have a very generic muffler from Midas that sounds very mellow without being loud and works very well. This is on a 78 Chero with 360.

I need help choosing mufflers that will bolt right up to my header collectors and will quiet down my ride. I have used glasspacks, and flowmasters but still to loud. I bolted up regular mufflers and the packing got blown out. Can anyone help?

As I recall from running that trail shortly after the "break up", they
only worked on a part of it to make it easier for the Runners support

I took mine to madhatter muffler in Mesa.....they did an inside the frame install and ran the exhaust all the way to the rear (nice and snug all the way back)....its the quietest my 327 has ever been......only problem I had was re-routing the rubber rear brake line on the axle due to being melted by the exhaust......don't remember what kind of mufflers they put on, I just told them I wanted it QUIET......

I you are interested in Swapping a Chevrolet TBI, TPI, LT-1/4 engine
then a good source is the book :
Chevrolet TPI & TBI Engine Swapping ($24.95) by
Jaguars That Run (JTR)
http://www.jagsthatrun.com/
The information is very comprehensive in this book and as I recall
has a Jeep swap. I can highly recommend this book, the detail is
just incredible.
Also,
Advance Adapters Catalog (free)
Jeep & Scout Conversion Booklet ($10.00) okay for general overview
information. Not nearly as detailed as JTR book.
